I too had mine say 100% for quite a while. I think it's just a glitch.

Pesonally I don't think much will have changed with battery life. I think that Apple had it programmed so that the last 20% was "more loaded" than the rest. Anyone who's taken their battery down to DEAD knows what I mean. It seems like the last 20% really lasts a long time. However the average joe probably never got down that far to notice. Therefore a simple software update would "free up" some of that bottom-loaded battery so that it would be more uniform across the percent meter.

That's just my speculation, I could be very very wrong.

Think it's now about 10hrs in that 20% but were told not to drain it that far so guess makes the battery stats being posted pretty pointless?

Would 20% stats be a better indication?

and using the last 20% is just for emergencies?

Still initial impressions are standby drain is better.

I'm pretty sure mines gotten worse :(

Not sure if this is normal for an iPhone 4S battery or not...any input?

EDIT: wifi on, Bluetooth on, listening to pandora, rhapsody, and siriusxm. Also spent time browsing forums. Two YouTube videos about 5 min in length a piece.

This seems about right to me, I'm getting around this as well

Just for proof as I know we like to see it :) heres a pic of mine from the first night when I ran it down to recalibrate. It says 5% but thats from it shutting down, rebooting and then me taking the pic.

Anyone notice that GPS icon staying on in the status bar longer after closing an app that utilizes GPS?

Yes - I noticed that as well. It also takes longer for my 4S to lock onto a signal with Verizon than it did before 5.1. I did a clean install and set up 5.1 as a new phone (not from backup) as well.

Battery life seems like it might be improved however. Too soon to say for sure.

5.1 has definitely made my 4's battery worse. Last night, my 4 had 18% battery left. This morning, its battery has completely drained, which had never happened to me before. Normally my 4 only lost about 3% battery overnight. I also noticed that the GPS icon comes on much more often on 5.1...

Worse after 5.1

I am a light iPhone 4S user, mostly texts, emails, and phone calls, and on iOS 5.0.1 I could go an entire day and still have 70 - 80% life remaining. It was really incredible, and would last 3-5 days without charging. After I updated to 5.1, I'm down to 30 - 40% at the end of the day. The phone won't even go two days now!

EDIT: I did a hard reset (hold home and sleep buttons) and it seems to have re-calibrated the battery meter, at least a little. I'm also going to let the phone totally drain itself before recharging it, and see if that helps.

Mine seems better over two days. Took mine off charger yesterday morning at 100% and it was at 79% last night at 11:00 PM when I went to bed. Didn't use it a lot yesterday but this is still much better. I have never had a day where I ended up in 70's since I upgraded to the 4s. Time will tell if improvement holds....

Very sketchy indeed! Also curious that both "terrible battery drain" posters above (Will21, and ScottyBinSLC) joined this forum at the same time on March 7, 2012....both have posted only once....both posted only in this thread....both posted within minutes of each other. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Seriously? You guys are paranoid, you know who else is paranoid of infiltrators, the Church of Scientology. You should really consider joining since you have so much in common with its members. I mean there are new iPhone owners born every day, there are new "switchers" born everyday, some of them are going to notice problems in the wonderful world of Apple. They'll turn to Google for answers, find this forum, sign up and share their experience or ask for help. They aren't going to live on the forum like creepy Apple nuts who get off on the ego boost of knowing answers to questions that shouldn't even need to be asked (like how do I copy and paste in OSX). So they post a single post and when they get attitude from the Apple dumpling gang they turn and Craigslist their iPhones for something that makes sense and lives up to what they advertise. Posting that your iPhone "works fine" does nothing in helping Apple or their user in sorting out these problems that DO exist. Kids should not be allowed on the internet or in these forums. Apple giving developers full access to your Contacts, so a cheesy Flashlight app can datamine all of my friends and families information and sell it to whoever so now I am getting LinkedIn suggestions for people whose phone number I had in my phone but had no other affiliation or link with isn't paranoia it is deductive and conclusive fact that Apple royally screwed up in not giving me the option of protecting my Contacts until recently. Now I am linked with people in cyberspace I have phoned once a year ago, and my children's information is leaked into oblivion. Disgusting really, so when you think Apple doesn't stink, it just "stinks different". Be helpful, not paranoid, not defensive, not stupid and if you are under 16 years old go out and play and make real friends, leave the forums to adults who are trying to make this technology usable and intuitive. I feel better now ;-).

All variables need to be controlled otherwise all these posts are pointless.

My variables are controlled at my end and Battery is clearly better :)

Actually, this thread has been quite helpful.

[FONT="Helvetica Neue, Helvetica"]As someone whose iPhone 4 is still running iOS 4.3.3, I find the battery improvement/working fine reports to be helpful and comforting. I’ve also seen a pattern of things that seem to help others:
  • Take note your habits and of which apps are constantly using power/data
  • Perform a hard reset once or twice after upgrading
  • Drain your battery completely, then charge it completely to reset its timer
  • When all else fails, perform a restore as a new device
The last suggestion would be a problem for me, as I have app data that I would like to preserve. Using something like
• eCamm's PhoneView (more intuitive, does a bit more, costs money, free upgrades for life)
• or the free iExplorer by Macroplant,
you can actually backup and copy back your app data after a restore without jailbreaking [tuaw article, business insider article], which is also very nice.

I’ve been reading this thread a couple times a day, and it's been really informative and helpful (barring all trolls). ;)

Well, it's Saturday and all I can say is, "Meh." My phone gets beat up pretty hard at work due to where I'm located, so I know the battery life won't be so hot here. I need a few days off so I can see whats what around the house. I can usually go 1 1/2 to 2 days at home. I'll post more next week.

At least it isn't worse!;)

Better life on my 4s with 5.1, got about 16 hours standby and 2.5 hrs use and I have 70% left. Definitely an improvement. I got rid of my jailbreak for this too!

I think it might be better. But it's 4:21 PM now, and I have 30% battery. I woke up at 8 AM with 100%. This is still unacceptable.

This is all very interesting - the first full day I used 5.1 I was pleased with the battery, but the second day was less good - however when it actually died on me that gave me the chance to charge it from 0% and therefore calibrate the battery. That's lead to a much better day today where I'm close to the end of the day with 50% still in reserve - sure it's not been the busiest day but this is still great..

All my variables have remained the same except I upgraded to 5.1 and my battery is now showing that it is draining faster. Whether it is actually draining faster or just not showing accurately, I have no clue. It used to sip battery when idle. I set it down an hour ago at 84% and did nothing and it went down to 75%. Before 5.1 it may have went down to 83% only. :(

Update on mine...screenshot attached. Will likely get 8 hours of use...huge improvement!

Did iOS 5.1 solve your battery problems? http://poll.ly/s/1r via @askpollly

Quick survey tool to see what the results are: http://poll.ly/s/1r via @askpollly

Personally I'm recalibrating my battery just in case. I do know that after I restarted my phone I had a purple location icon for Traffic and in the multitasking pane and the location area in settings I couldn't find a single app using it, other than Apple's own system services.

In general I'd say better. i have Push email on 3 accounts, FB, Twitter. At least a good 10-12 hours with moderate use.

Heres my Addition.

IMO, this update helped a lot. For 2-2.5 of those hours of usage, i was playing sky gambler and jenga (two very intensive 3d games). Much better than 5.0 or 5.0.1 which i got 2 hours usage only web browsing, and texting and 8-10 hours standby. I think this was well worth giving up my jailbreak for (iPhone4S)

Edit: I had to calibrate the battery (charge to 100%, then hard reset, then charge to 100 again, then run it down to 0, then run it back up) to get the improvement. It seemed worse at the beginning, but after i calibrated the battery, it became marvelous. Also, a hard reset is holding home and power until the phone restarts and it can help your battery a lot and fix any lag you are having.

I've noticed a drop in battery life. I'm out of my house ~10 hours daily for work and usually I have a quarter of battery showing on the bar when I get home in the evening. I don't have the battery percentage turned on, so I can't give specifics. I haven't been using my iPhone more than usual since updating to 5.1, but the past two days I have had the "battery is now at 20 / 10%" warnings.
