All seems pretty good here. Just waiting for it to completely die now.

After reading this entire thread up to now:

[FONT="Helvetica Neue, Helvetica"]I’ve backed up and synced my iPhone 4. All my photos are in my iPhoto Library, the other essentials are on MobileMe anyway (still waiting for a trustworthy, convenient Keychain, Dock Items, and Application preferences sync solution before moving to iCloud… anyone?), and I've backed up my app data, which I will restore with one of the third party utilities that I mentioned in my previous post.

I've stayed with 4.3.3 specifically to avoid battery drainage issues, and after reading about everyone’s advice and experiences, am planning to take the plunge to 5.1

With my usage, (FYI, this was with 3G always on, Wi-Fi turned on most of the time, and a combination of e-mail, texting, app/game usage, taking pictures, and of course phone calls, which vary for 5 mins to an hour and a half.) my phone’s battery conked out at 5h:3mins of usage and 15h:50mins of standby. I think that’s pretty good. The next day, it was 5h:44 mins of usage and 11h:41mins of standby. Also good.

That was me draining and charging my battery completely, twice in row.

My next step is to restore my phone as a new device and install iOS 5.1.

Wish me luck.

(P.S. I feel more secure knowing I have AppleCare. :p)

Didn't noticed a huge significant improve, but battery was not drained that fast now. :) I'm sure iOS 5.2/3 or 6 is gonna better! Ya!

I've got the 4s on 5.0. Saturday about 10pm I charged it to 100%, closed all the apps in the dock and these are my results so far. I have had location services and wifi on the entire time and bluetooth off. Used it normally for a weekend and did not close any apps since just after charging. I did let it run completely dead Friday. I think I'm getting pretty good life after reading what other people get and I'm a little afraid to update on the chance the people that claim there's are getting worse are accurate.

Would be nice if someone did a more scientific test than "I used to get x hours now I get y hours.

any idea why my usage and standby figures are the same? I Have reset the phone, did a fresh install. When I did a fresh install, the figures were different, now theyre back to being the same.

I'd assume you installed all the same apps you had before? Think there is a rogue app? May want to try removing a few apps that you put on between the time it was working fine and the time it started acting up.

It seems better on my regular ip4, but my favorite feature of 5.1 is the fact that my phone doesn't randomly launch apps any more. :D

I would unlock my phone and the music player or some other app would be running and I never launched it. It would do this several times a week. This has now stopped.

I found the biggest help to my battery woes was the fact that some how Siri's "Raise to speak" was turned on. After I turned that off, battery life seems to have almost doubled.

In Defense

Seriously? You guys are paranoid, you know who else is paranoid of infiltrators, the Church of Scientology. You should really consider joining since you have so much in common with its members. I mean there are new iPhone owners born every day, there are new "switchers" born everyday, some of them are going to notice problems in the wonderful world of Apple. They'll turn to Google for answers, find this forum, sign up and share their experience or ask for help. They aren't going to live on the forum like creepy Apple nuts who get off on the ego boost of knowing answers to questions that shouldn't even need to be asked (like how do I copy and paste in OSX). So they post a single post and when they get attitude from the Apple dumpling gang they turn and Craigslist their iPhones for something that makes sense and lives up to what they advertise. Posting that your iPhone "works fine" does nothing in helping Apple or their user in sorting out these problems that DO exist. Kids should not be allowed on the internet or in these forums. Apple giving developers full access to your Contacts, so a cheesy Flashlight app can datamine all of my friends and families information and sell it to whoever so now I am getting LinkedIn suggestions for people whose phone number I had in my phone but had no other affiliation or link with isn't paranoia it is deductive and conclusive fact that Apple royally screwed up in not giving me the option of protecting my Contacts until recently. Now I am linked with people in cyberspace I have phoned once a year ago, and my children's information is leaked into oblivion. Disgusting really, so when you think Apple doesn't stink, it just "stinks different". Be helpful, not paranoid, not defensive, not stupid and if you are under 16 years old go out and play and make real friends, leave the forums to adults who are trying to make this technology usable and intuitive. I feel better now ;-).
thank you

iOS 5.1 Battery Drain

As I mentioned, I would provide an update on my battery life. Since the initial frustrations after installing 5.1, I did a wipe and restore as a new phone. Since then, battery life has been phenomenal. I no longer have everything turned "off" to use the phone and charge every other day. The following screen shot typifies the average days I get now. Thanks Apple for fixing this problem.

Getting >8 hours on 5.1 so far. I think I was getting around 6-7 hours on 5.0.x.

Wow.. iOS 5.1 has made my iPhone usable again. Better late than never, but i hope we don't see a similar issue with iOS 6.0

At 1%, I'm currently getting 7 Hours of usage, and 1 Day and 10 Hours of standby. Now that is fantastic.

I used to get 4 hours of usage, on average, before 5.1!

My question is how do you have the battery percentage showing on the status bar when it is clearly turned off in the settings menu?

dont know , now that i noticed i can turn it off and on and it wont take any effect.

thanks. well its been the same since i had 5.0 installed, as far as I remember. I always thought it was something to do with os 5. looks like I gotta start uninstalling everything one by one. problem is I have >150 apps

what are your setting for this to get 8hrs? I know when the 4s first came out everyone was turning off items to consume the battery.

Forget the settings, what matters more is how they were using it during that period.

If they're just listening to music while the phone is locked and screen is off, it's not difficult to get those kinds of times. Now, if they were playing Infinity Blade 2 the whole time... completely different story.

Definitely an improvement.

This was with 3G on 24/7.

It's been a few days now and since I updated and the battery was calibrated once (fully run down and recharged) performance has settled down into what is, to me, a real improvement. I can be quite fearless in my usage now and still wind up with around 40-50% in reserve at the end of the day, which is excellent.

The change is very tangible - although it was never awful before, I was certainly always aware that my battery was dropping all the time I used the phone - you could see the percentage dropping. Now what I notice is how often the % doesn't change, if that makes any sense - the number of times I look and discover the figure's just the same as it was before.

I never had a 4 to compare this to, but my 4S now runs rings around my old 3GS on battery (as well as everything else).

Hi All

New to the fourm, this is my first post.

I have been reading this thread trying to decide if i should update to 5.1.

I have a 4s running 5.0.1 and here are some screen shots of my battery, do you think is should bother updating?

My usage is facebook, you tube, safari, texting a lot, small amout of call time, and ebay app.

What do you think?

I dont want to update as it seams to be a 50/50 chance of getting a duff batt.

I would say go for the update. Although your usage does look pretty good.

I myself wasn't really experiencing what I'd call bad battery life on 5.01. Despite that 5.1 has shown a slight improvement for me.
