I think switching 3G off when at home and at work think you should see a good improvement.

Confused ..... I do not know now if I update my i4 .... I'm on 5.0.1 with major battery problems ...

So far so good and improved. I'll know for sure later today if it's much better.

Nothing amazing: (and I'm on wifi for all of that time)

If your standby and usage time are the same, then something is wrong like a hanging app. This happens to me sometimes and a reset will usually kill the hanging app that is causing the battery drain.

Has anyones iPhone 4S battery gotten better with the update?

YES!

I took mine off the charger, as usual, at 3:30 this am. It is now 8:32 and it still shows 100%.

Seems a little fishy to me as usually it would be around 90% at this time!

Not sure that new OS could save THAT much power. Looks like Apple has skewed the battery indicator:(

After more use it seems my battery life is about the same as it was prior. I never considered myself to have problems though. I get 6 - 8 hours of usage per charge. The more I'm talking on the phone the faster it goes compared to data use.

I wouldn't doubt this.

I'm on 5.0.1 with my 4S and have no battery issues. It lasts the day most of the time. Changed some location settings to save battery and I'm jailbroken. Keep in mind that battery might actually drain faster after OTA update as battery reading may be off. A full night charge then usage will be a fair test. Please post your experiences on battery improvements from 5.0.1 to 5.1 to see if it's worth losing the jailbreak(for now).

OTA updates can make the battery indicator be off. A full discharge and charge should fix this. The screen on alone for 1/2 hour should be reducing the battery.

So far today my battery is pretty much EXACTLY the same as it was on 5.0.1. I'm pretty disappointed b/c that means I'm still only getting b/e 4-4:30 hours of usage. For whatever reason, my old iPhone 4 gets significantly better batter life.

I'm going to let it drain all the way down today and see if maybe it needs to be re-calibrated on 5.1 (though I'm not hopeful).

I upgraded my OS last night via iTunes. I have never had problems with my battery before but just noting how much better it "seems" to be doing after the update.

We shall see at the end of the day when it is plugged in the charger. In the past it would be at 50% plus or minus

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A406 Safari/7534.48.3)

I think people need to accept that nothing will improve the battery life on the 4s now. It's been 5 months since release. Apple lied about achievable figures and it's likely the dual core A5 is just consuming more power. I've been through 4 different phones (for other reasons) and all are the same rubbish battery life.

Usually overnight I'd lose about 5% and the usage stats would say something like 8 hrs standby and 30-40 mins usage.

Updated to 5.1 and last night it lost 0%. The stats said 6 hours 40 minutes standby and 14 minutes usage. Now over that extra 1h20min maybe it would have lost 1% or something...but much much better so far.

It is 7 hours from when I removed it from the charger and it is at 95% now. At this rate I will have a several days before I need to charge again!

WOW! Might you become the first person to achieve the "200 hours standby time"?!?!?!

Mine is noticeably better, but then again a restore mimics the same behavior for about a week before it gets crappy again.

why not update? sounds like you have nothing to lose since your battery already sucks.

Well, my battery dropped 7% overnight. Normally I will only drop 1% maybe 2% so maybe there is an issue? Will watch it long term and see what happens.

You were getting phenomenal battery life before the update. The iPhone 4S specs state a 200hr standby time, translating about 1/2% loss each hour in standby. Assuming you phone was doing absolutely nothing, after an 8 hour night I would have expected you to lose at least 4%.

And that's giving Apple the benefit of the doubt that they didn't pump up the specs, so I would actually expect a 5-6% drop overnight.

Not yet but....

My useage and standby times are the same! It's been on standby for at least an hour, yet they show the same times. Weird. Maybe a reboot will fix that.

Just a little off-topic:

Does the automatic e-mail checking counts towards usage time? Because I have it set to check each 15 minutes and after night there's 1,5 hours usage time. That would suggest that 1 check is about 2 minutes usage. Is that possible?

Yes, automatic email checking does count toward usage time.

iOS 5.1 Battery Drain

Very sketchy indeed! Also curious that both "terrible battery drain" posters above (Will21, and ScottyBinSLC) joined this forum at the same time on March 7, 2012....both have posted only once....both posted only in this thread....both posted within minutes of each other. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Sorry if my experience with iOS 5.1 upsets some of you. I'm not sure of the other individual with this same problem, but I can only speak to mine; regardless of when I joined the forum. I joined because this was the only place I could find anything on this issue.

I experienced problems all night with my 4S. I am now having to do a restore and start over. I will post what happens. If you don't like it, move on. The thread is for those WITH the problem seeking help from those that may have a solution. We're not looking to hear from those with zero stake and too much judgement on their hands when they read something they don't necessarily like.

For the record I own an iPad 2, iPhone 4, and an iMac. So, I'm not a hater. Just unhappy with the battery issues that have plagued the iPhone. thanks
