I want to upgrade my jailbroken iPhone 4S anyway but the OTA update doesn't work... I keep getting an error as it prepares the update, so I'm just going to do it through iTunes.:apple:

OSX upgrades were never as bad as the jump from ios 3 to 4, and ios 4 to 5. Trust me, I have used and upgraded OS 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6. With ios 5, my iPad is almost unusable, even for simple things. Here is an example. In a one hour period of web browsing, safari crashed over 15 times, even with all other apps closed. That is totally unacceptable, and never was an issue with ios 4. I once upgraded a powermac G4 all the way from OS 9 strait to 10.4, and although it was slower, it was still quite usable. Why can the computer go through six OS versions and be fine, but one cripples my iPad? There is something wrong here, and I am not going for it anymore. If this is how apple wants to run, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

You should really update to iOS 5.1. I updated my iPad 1 and now I can have several apps open at the same time and Safari no longer crashes. I just tried to get Safari to crash by having 10 apps running at the same time and then I had 5 tabs open in Safari. Safari did not crash. Besides that the scrolling in Safari is smoother and more responsive. Yes, it's snappier :D

There is one thing I just noticed about the iOS 5.1 update. In the task tray, the apps are now identified with their name under each icon.

And yep, my OTA update just failed (jailbroken if you couldn't tell).

Do you recon that updating it from iTunes would work? Mine's just hanging so far. It's saying "Waiting for iPhone." For the past 10 minutes. And the screen has a loading bar under the logo but it's been blank the whole time.

[UPDATE]

The progress bar finally started moving. So I think this does obviously work. Great.

Yeah I know what you mean...

My iPhone 3G is pretty much unusable now. Even with a fresh install of the latest iOS it can use.

Yeah, I had the iMac DV SE from 99' and I upgraded from OS 9 - 10.4 and I remember 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2 were really laggy then we got a boost from 10.3 to 10.4.

9.1 always felt snappier to me though. Especially since it was running on the old G3

I have iOS 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3G and its a joy to use. You can downgrade the iPhone 3G but apparently not newer iOS devices without saving a special file. If you forgot to save it you are apparently out of luck.

Now Japanese dictation OTOH, is really spot-on.

Advantages of a language with a smaller phoneme inventory than English. :)

what is akamai?

They provide hosting resources for people who need very large temporary throughput, like Apple every time they release a major update. It doesn't make sense for Apple to maintain a huge battery of servers that will mostly only get hit a few times a year, so they tend to supplement their usual hardware with help from Akamai. This is speaking in very general terms, of course; I have no actual knowledge of what Apple and Akamai are doing, but it's a fair bet that this is what's happening.

Find my friends still showing km instead of miles

Seriously? Just multiply by 0.62. 3/5 is close enough. I'm from America, the land of refusing to admit the metric system exists, and even I can do that.

This fixed the battery problems I was having with my 4S. I lost half the battery just overnight, now it's back to normal!

OTA Update worked like a charm on the iPhone 4 and now my compass is finally functional again. I will see if location based reminders will work now as well. Yeah, it also feels a tad faster again.

Edit: There already is an iPhoto Update to delete pictures out of Photo Stream. Now Apple just needs to fix Aperture.

I hope I did not just brick my phone

uh oh. Ran the update & all seemed fine. Noticed I was unable to send a text message that the phone would not connect to AT&T network, even after a couple of restarts. After connecting USB to laptop, iTunes does not recognize the device as having a phone number. Apps & everything else seem to be working.

I'll give its few hours to connect, and if not then attempt Restore??

UPDATE: nothing to fear, it fixed itself an hour later. Never seen that before in the update process, hope I never see it again.

Pity they did not make the lock screen camera slider more usable. For example, slide up -> switch to still camera, slide down -> switch to video camera, press the slider -> take the instant photo without waiting for camera preview. Anyway, it's great addition.

I can't get the update downloaded. I have tried getting it from the link posted in this thread, from iTunes and also OTA and I get errors all the way around. Anyone else having this issue? Its 0300 I doubt there is that many people downloading at this time of night.

I'm keep on getting "unable to check for an update" messages when I'm trying OTA update option, this continues for a few hours already. I'm about to try updating via iTunes in a few minutes and I hope that'll work.

Ok, iTunes option doesn't work either, I'm out of luck I guess...

Im the same here with iOS 5.1... no luck yet OTA on my iPhone... I keep getting the message that the server is not responding and I tried the same via iTunes... nothing...

I had no problems downloading iOS 5 when it first came out so whats up with this small update? Server crash or just not responding... maybe simply too many people are trying at the same time, possibly?

Been on the phone to Apple tech support for over an hour. Have done a reset, a restore, restarted my mac, switched off my router, blah blah blah. They say they have not been notified of a server overload and that I should take my 4S to a store.

All this just to do a software update, What a royal pain in the a..e. :(:(

Updated my 3GS the old fashioned way, all went smoothly. It feels smoother and faster than ever....

not working here either.

iTunes nor iphone directly. crap! typical Apple to claim its not their fault.

What i love about this update is now i can turn out 3G when at work so it won't hurt my battery as i don't have 3G coverage at work and it just searches for a connection hense losing 20+ % battery life when i hardly use it.

I've been trying all day to update both my iPad and iPhone 4GS and also keep getting the message that the server is not responding and I tried the same via iTunes which won't work either.

Clearly it's an issue with Apple. It's getting late here now so I'll try agin tomorrow I guess.

it worked

Try again using itunes. Suddenly it started downloading. looks like server overload even though they dont admit it.

I've updated mine to 5.1

This one is faster than 5.0.1 no doubt.

The phone is much more responsive, some apps open faster and gaming so far has been great.

One title that I really noticed and improvement was in Infinity Blade II. It loads faster and gameplay is smoother than before.

The same can be said about Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.

Good work Apple.
