I think that is extremely important to have the stocks and weather in notification pull down menu. No one needs wifi, Bluetooth, gsm toogles!

Please don't stress iOS devs!

Clearly you don't travel a lot, especially between places that have slow WiFi.

This would be an incredibly useful option, especially the Bluetooth because it's ridiculous how many steps it takes to turn it on or off right now, still in iOS 5.

Yeah, because how else is it going to find out if you're around known networks? It needs to search for them. So therefore it must always be searching.

Seriously this was one of the first things they said when the first gen iPhone came out, even in person at apple stores. "If your battery is running low or doesn't last long, turn off wifi because it constantly searches for a signal and uses even more battery when not connected."

An Airplane Mode toggle would be great.

Dunno about the subways in the US, but the London Underground doesn't have any signal on the tunnelled sections so the battery can drain a lot if you don't tell the phone to stop looking for a cell tower.

It's not all about travelling by plane, despite the function's name.

is it really THAT hard to go home screen->settings->wifi off??
if you want that feature go to andoid or maybe jailbreak

Or, you could just ask them to add widgets, maps ('nough said) and a redesign / more Honeycomb / desktop-y interface for the iPad's homescreen.

for wifi its

currently :
home button
-> settings
-> wifi
-> toggle off
-> home button
+ x number of steps to get back to app

vs

sbsettings
swipe status bar (activate)
-> tap toggle
-> home button

worst case scenario in a full screen app
home button
-> swipe status bar (activate)
-> tap toggle
-> home button
+ x number of steps to get back to app.

bluetooth is worse
currently
home button
-> settings
-> scroll down to general (since there are more options at the top of settings page)
-> general
-> bluetooth
-> toggle off
-> home button
+ x number of steps to get back to app

vs

sbsettings
swipe status bar (activate)
-> tap toggle
-> home button

worst case scenario in a full screen app:
home button
-> swipe status bar (activate)
-> tap toggle
-> home button
+ x number of steps to get back to app.

The worst case scenario can be completely avoided if sbsettings was activated with a double click of the home button. (There's room on the screen to have it there plus the fast app switcher)

it literally takes seconds to do either thing. if you are that busy that you cannot spare mere seconds to turn your bluetooth headset off and disable your phone perhaps you don't need one. If you always need to turn wi-fi on and off maybe just leave it off, your data phone WILL work on 3G.

I do agree with you though, a quick key on the lock screen would be convenient yes, but necessary? nope.

it's harder to turn bluetooth on if you forgot to turn it on before you start driving.

maybe apple doesn't want to test their products outside (company politics), using it on real scenarios; thus, the design of the interface doesn't match a good the requirements for mobility.

I haven't delved much into Obj-C programming, so I'll approach this as a web developer... wouldn't it be pretty simple to implement?

Assuming the Notification area expands dynamically (I don't see why it wouldn't), you just need to add some space at the top, and throw in the buttons which trigger the commands. And the functions are already there in the OS, so there should be relatively little work to do, right?

I mean obviously they're busy finishing iOS 5 but.... hopefully they can squeeze this into their schedule.

The hardest part for devs would likely be getting the interface right. As far as the code goes, it's all already in iOS.

I only use Bluetooth when I drive in my car, so turning it off to save battery when not needed is nice. It makes no sense to me why the Bluetooth toggle is inside General and not instead under Wi-Fi. Yes, it take seconds, but if they planted Bluetooth 3 levels lower than it is right now then it would only take maybe 5 more seconds to get to. The question is why not make it easier?

I think you can even take out a step in Wi-Fi by inserting the hotspots on the Settings screen like in the attachment.

I would love this feature and sent apple feedback about it again today. I have wifi at home but not at work, 3G at work but not at home so a quick way to toggle both of these on/off in the day would be welcome.
The alternative would be full-blown profiles like the old nokia days!

I could care less about weather and stocks being there (but the option should be), but Bluetooth and WiFi switches should be there. I find that my phone battery drains 4%-5% more if I leave WiFi on while I am out and about all day.

Is ti only me who uses Airplane Mode everyday before sleeping, instead of turning off then phone completely, to be able to use the alarm clock?

Everyone has different instant needs, but it usually works out to a common subset.

Samsung puts these controls on their tablet notification shade. The phones are similar, but with Airplane mode and no Silent or Orientation Lock.

Perhaps Apple didn't want to appear as copying Samsung, especially after throwing that look-and-feel lawsuit at them?

well, looking at the past and predicting how Apple works i have faith that we'll get something more creative than samsung toogles, like pointing the iphone to a wifi router and shaking it in order to toogle the wifi reception; of course, you should buy the new iphone 7 for thataaat

Not sure if I saw this suggested because it was hard to sort through all the back-and-forth, but what about the eventual availability of a widget, much like weather or stocks, where it's interactive with switches to turn off these options? An actual widget, not necessarily options to have them in the notification area as full icons. Once you start clogging up the notification area with shortcut toggles, icons and the like, it will start to overpower the whole purpose of the notification area.

Just have the option to install a widget that does these things in one line without the need to clog up two to three lines of the notification area with quick switches. I'm loving the current state of the notification area (with tweaks of course come Beta 2-3-4 time). Love how I can have all my reminders in one little scrollable curtain.

I wouldn't mind a quick wifi switch because being in NYC, it's constantly peeking around for stuff, and there are times where my auto-connection to AT&T's freebie wifi isn't good enough in speed and I need to slide to 3G.

My apologies if this has already been covered.

EDIT:

And what about a swipe from the bottom upward for widgets and settings, leaving the pull-down menu from the top as just a notification area only? This way you still get full access to the notification area, the ability to still swipe to the left for search, to the right for more apps, and then from the bottom with all the settings, widgets, etc.

Apparently Apple's codename for their pulldown shade is the "Bulletin Board". Sounds like a place for lots of different things.

A pulldown shade is invaluable because it's always available no matter what app you're in. That's why it's an excellent place to put controls, notes, whatever... not just notifications.

HTC has a simple solution to the overcrowding problem: they divide it up with tabs, between recently used apps+notifications, and controls.

I could imagine Apple adding another tab for widgets, and so forth.

Landscape mode on an HTC tablet shows both:

It's a perfect place for a spotlight integration too, and would free up the homescreen from an extra page.

I don't think it matters how often you use them, it's just convenient to have easy access to them. I rarely switch airplane mode, bluetooth, 3G, etc. but I have been jailbroken before and had SBSettings installed and it was a lot quicker to turn these settings on/off the few times I had to.

I'm pretty sure there are many ways to make these options accessible that are not like Samsung's

Can't you read? As I said, there's a switch to make the iPhone stop searching for networks. It's been there since day one. Very useful too.

Sorry, but different people need different things, i would love to have WiFi/bluetooth in the notification area.
