It's starting to sound like maybe you haven't used an Android lock. You can repeat dots. You can go backwards. You can switch directions more than once mid-pattern. You would have no way to tell which dot I started on and which dot I ended on.

Furthermore by your own logic: I unlock my phone and leave residue on the screen. After I unlock it, what do I do next? I use my phone, which remember, by YOUR logic, leaves residue on the screen. So please, for everyone here, explain how you see the difference between where I left the lock screen pattern and where I left the frantic back/forth swipes I made during an intense game of fruit ninja. I for one would love to hear the explanation.

I have used lockpatterns before, but it was a while ago. Let me ask you a question, do you frantically play fruit ninja every time you unlock your phone? Personally, I like to use my phone for other thing, perhaps quickly checking a text message or sending an email. I don't know about you but I don't frantically swipe my phone to send email. That means that my pattern would still be left visible.

Maybe not my top 3 but how about a thing as simple as being able to lock your photos?

Wow. Really? Like I said before, come unlock my phone and it's yours.

Ah, the classic "I have no comeback for you're argument so I'll pretend the one you refuted last time still stands" ploy. Bold move. You understand that we're never going to meet in person so I can't take your phone, however easy it is.

Like I said before, this is not something that will work every time, and I was simply trying to alert people to this downfall.

My List for now subject to change anytime if I think of something cooler :D

1) Notification system worthy of this phone: I came from android and I do not regret it at all but I miss hitting my sleep button and being able to see so much info at just a glance. I ran about 15 miles today and all you runners out there no how much you don't want to be messing with unlocking and checking stuff. So this ties right in with more lock screen info but at the same time I don't want this getting crazy. We don't need HTC sense UI influencing iOS, nothing against it but apple will be apple lets keep it that way.

2) More advanced network settings: Bring back the field test menu...it didn't hurt anyone and I'm a nerd for networking stuff. Also add the ability to disable EvDO on the CDMA iPhone 4, I know I know this may not be a huge battery saver but there are still areas I frequent where it switches from 1xRTT to 1xEvDO allot or EvDO is only on 1900 so I get **** EvDO but great 1xRTT...in those cases I would rather have my battery not get raped and let my notifications get pushed over 1xRTT as I doubt most of that stuff is really data intensive. EDIT: Add roaming indicator and roaming settings. Automatically display "Off-Network" where your home carrier should be when roaming.

3) Multi-tasking should be enhanced not only overall but for battery life. That is make it so apps that don't need to run in the background don't. I hate seeing 64 apps running in the background when Im not using 90% of them.

Pick any 3 feature you'd like with iOS 5 and Steve will make sure they are implemented.

What do you request?

Mine...

1. Much improved notification system
2. Live Icons - That display information
3. Free turn-by-turn navigation with all bells and whistles of a GPS app with offline support, just download a map for any city or country and use it offline.

WHY does everyone not like the notification system? I think the current system is just fine, please no android style notification systems!

1. Notification system is fine the way it is right now

2. Live icons - you mean like weather?

3. Not really a request, more of an accommodation...

Mine are:

1. Improved battery performance (not saying it's bad right now, but I know they will manage to squeeze in a few more hours)

2. More RAM

3. 4 in screen

we are talking SOFTWARE here...not HARDWARE =p

If the current system is "fine", and the android style is better, why not an upgrade? :D

by the way the current one is definitely not fine. it's way too intrusive. the android's is definitely superior. i have no idea why you're against the android style notification system.

It depends. A lot of times I like it. There are certain times I would most definitely want it to be intrusive (For example my task list thing or my calendar on appointments I set to remind me). Things that I want to be reminded where I don't want to not so easily notice or easily ignore the notification.

I'd personally like more an option to say be intrusive or not. Or maybe have it wait until I go to home screen to pop up the notices.

then you can just quit whatever you're doing and read the notification... artificial intrusiveness :D

Hmmmm, software...

The only real fresh approach to a new os is Windows phone 7. Everything else out there is just grids of icons. I think if Apple can't pull off something revolutionary like that, people are going to be sorely dissatisfied.

Don't see it happening though. Look at the change from ios3 to ios4. Not a big game changer. We'll be lucky if we see live icons out of the whole deal.

If I had to pick three -

1) File system access, at least to a limited set of folders.
2) Being able to sideload unsigned software.
3) A better notification system.

Note the question isn't which features I think are likely before anyone says 2 will never happen.

Phazer

Sorry, but I don't think that works as well (basically I do want a *nag* feature to get me to actually go, ALright alright, I'll do it. It's just too easily mentally to ignore a little icon on top if i know what it is).

I don't think it's a bad thing to leave the option to actually do a pop up or at least let some programs do it that way (like task lists or calendar apps).

Agreed about 95%. I miss those aspects of Android. However as my iPhone is built 999999999999999999x better than almost all Android phones Im not complaining too much yet.

As far as I know your pattern can as long as you can make it but it cant 'repeat' by using the same dots twice. As for direction, there are really only 2 possibilities. As for the residue, are you trying to tell me that you can use your phone all day and not leave a mark on the display? No? That's what I thought.

I do have good hygiene, and I assure you it is not impossible. Those of us that practice a compulsive addiction for cleaning their phone screens will not have this problem, but most people only clean their screen once in a while.

But after you unlock your phone you unlock your phone you use it correct. Thus adding more smudges making it unreadable.

This whole debate is making me laugh :D

1. A drastically improved lockscreen.
2. More vibrant colored/tweaked stock icons. (with removal of the "contacts" app because it's unnecessary as well as hideous)
3. A better dock.

*Bonus* More customization.

1)
3) Custom SMS tones... must be an inside joke at apple

No, just another case of Steve Jobs having to have total control of everything and dictate how you should use your devices.

1. Completely revamped notification system.

2. Completely revamped UI with the ability to use live updating widgets and icons, more flexibility in grid spacing and icon placement, etc.

3. More customization including more sms/ringtone/mail tone control, more color control of the UI, etc.

1.Let me pair my iPad and my iPhone. to read text and answer calls, maybe even transfer media
2. system wide dictionary like iBooks
3. Speech to text

Nice list. I agree. If Apple is to copy anyone, they should turn away from boring Android and look instead to innovative webOS.

WebOS features Apple should copy:
1. OTA updates--time to free iDevices from iTunes, which is already not used by many, non-geek iPhone users
2. Some sort of cloud storage for files (like dropbox) and music--same reasoning as above, free iDevices from iTunes
3. Better integration with iPhone--either touch-to-sync or allow reading of iPhone SMS/MMS on iPad
4. Better multitasking--maybe a webOS-like card system, or somehow allow split screen apps for true multitasking
5. Last but not least, vastly improved notification system with ability to triage notifications globally without needing to open respective apps.

I have an idea how about everyone that likes andriod notification better than iphones go and sell their iphone and buy an Andriod.
