Compared to google maps, the new implementation is slower.

I agree.

And especially wrt the Android version of google maps, it's not nearly as good:
- not enough high-res satellite images (tip: try searching for the Brandenburg gate in Berlin)
- hybrid layout needs major work (lots of awkward drawing artefacts, even with vectors streets slow to load, street visual design is ugly in hybrid mode)
- not enough streets shown on the map. Google shows lots more, but still doesn't clutter the screen. By the time you zoom in to actually see any major road names, you're so close you don't get an overview of the city.
- major road names not visible first. They should use traffic data to detect the busiest inner-city roads and show you those first.

By I'm hopeful apple will make improvements there as they go on. Especially when it comes to map readability: this is not an easy science. It really strains your UI people to come up with meaningful map rendering.

Now I'm sure that the money Apple has invested in building it's maps service is massive, but wouldn't Apple now save a small but not insignificant chunk of money since Google started charging for access to the maps API?

Of course I'm assuming that Apple has to pay Google for the privilege. But once Google brings their own maps app, they won't be getting that fee and they'll still be serving up maps. Google doesn't make much money from maps via other means does it?

I'm pretty sure they do, or they wouldn't provide maps for free on the Internet. I expect they make money by charging businesses to be on there.

Is there now an option to change the Notification sounds, such as being able to set a different sound for Twitter other then the default Tri-tone?

Yes. You can set ringtones individually for:
*Calls
*Texts
*Voicemail
*E-mail
*send e-mail
*Tweet
*Facebook
*Calendar notifications
*Reminder notifications
You can also set individual vibration patterns for each.

If you read the release notes, it does say that high res satellite images have not been enabled in the beta, or words to that effect...

As per previous betas, there's things that are not fully functional as yet, wait until official release before moaning about maps....

Thats all possible already other then the vibration patterns.

What i meant was when i get mentioned in a Tweet Tri-tone always sounds and there is no way to change that on IOS5, i was hoping there might be a setting to change the sound in Settings>Notifications>Twitter

That's down to the twitter app devs, not iOS. Beejive does it's own notification sounds, along with some games I have.

For now, no.
It is a shame. Street View in Maps is a cool feature. For me, not so useful, but according to many other people, Street View was important. I believe Apple will roll out something similar in their in-house Maps.app. The Maps.app is in its infancy. It will change A LOT by the time the consumer release of iOS 6 comes out. Yes, it's buggy and crashes now, but it's a beta, so that's not surprising. I believe Apple will pull it together and make it very useful by the time everyone can get their hands on iOS 6.
I am personally more excited about the emphasis on Local stuff rather than Flyover, etc. Finding a local place with the current Maps.app is just a terrible experience. Hopefully Apple's new Maps.app will improve upon this, as it is one of its promised features, and I'm sure Apple will deliver.

How do you get Street View in iOS 5's Maps?

Tap on the little button next to the streetname...?

I've noticed when using the back space button for text it deletes the words/letters much more smoothly and quicker...it doesn't appear to go word by word any more either.

The airplay icon when in use is now orange instead of blue on iPad, I don't know about iPhone.

I don't think this was already said, if it was I apologize.

If you are scrolling, if you hold down another finger on the screen the scrolling will be a lot slower. Also it disables the fluent scrolling after you let loose of the screen.

I can't remember that that was the case in the previous iOS'es, right?

No, that's new! Great find!

Here are a few things I have found that haven't been posted yet (or no screenshots):

- When in Calendar app, double tapping a date in month view will take you to the day view and automatically scroll to your first appointment on that day.

- Individual notification settings per email account (Alert style and sound)

- Change notifications sounds from within "Notifications" settings

- Show iMessage Alerts From in "Notifications" settings. This also appears in Game Centre notification settings and probably any other notifications that involve contacts.

- "Related People" field for any contact

- Safari search text now reads "Search" and no longer "Google"

- Reminders app now shows reminder notes below reminder title
