Now I hate the new autobrightness function. At least give the option of the old one back. I didn't like the full control on android phones for a damn good reason: it always assume the device's sensors are smarter than my own eyeballs. They aren't, not by a long shot (it starts really going south in any area with plenty of shadows with small patches of light mixed in), and the iOS 6 (beta) version is no better.

In the iOS 1-5, we were able to set a rough "bracket (based on where we put the slider)," of where the autobrightness function was restricted to operating. Now? it just goes whereever it wants, and ignores whatever we set (it moves the slider on its own).

I realize this is a beta, but this doesn't seem like a mistake on Apples part.
They need to add an option for sure as plenty of people seem to hate the change.

Personally, I like that it actually seems to go from the darkest to the brightest and that it works instantaneously now. It used to bug me that I would go into a darker room (or turn the lights off) and it would be eye ball burning bright for a minute. Now it changes just about instantly.

Update on my iOS 6 usage - What I've found I like

App Store
* I love the new app store layout. Pictures are inline and you can see them full screen by tapping (they don't seem to be retina yet, at least on a 4S).

* Ratings are a huge step up as you now get to see the graph of how many are 5 star, etc. So far you can only see 5 but I'm sure that's a bug they've yet to fix.

* Updating no longer requires a password and it doesn't kick you to the home screen when buying an app.

* I also like how you get the change log for every app in a drop down under each on the same page so you don't have to go back and forth to see them all.

* You can finally send links to apps anywhere (sharing sheets are great!).

Tunes Store
* The new layout is cleaner and nicer with a lot of album art. Previews continue to play while navigating away and also in the background (hallelujah!). Ping is gone! and Facebook has replaced it.

* You can send links to songs/albums anywhere (sharing sheet).

Music app
* iTunes Match works perfectly for me. No more cloud icons. It just looks as if I have all of the music all the time. Music starts playing much faster on "4G" than it did in iOS 5 when streaming and it assume you want to save it for playback later (most of the time that's what I want).

* The app itself is still fairly buggy and other than it looking different there aren't many changes.

Maps
* Navigation is still brilliant. However, you lose the cache if you background the app (switch to another app). If you're out of network range then Siri will continue navigating but you won't have any visual cues (no map tiles).

* Telling Siri to take me somewhere always works for me (I have almost no accent though) and can easily be done while driving while watching the road (I just say, "Take me home" or "take me to [insert place name]"). If there are multiple address for a person in you contact list you chose the appropriate one by saying "Home" , "Work" , "[whatever it's tagged as]" or tapping on the one you want.

* As long as you're already in motion navigation starts without you having to tap "Start" after a few seconds. Can't remember if that's the case for multiple routes.

Settings
* Turning Bluetooth on/off is much easier to do (it's on the main settings screen).

* Do No Disturb is unbelievable. For those of us who like to completely mute notifications/calls/whatever this is a godsend. I no longer get woken by my phone vibrating when someone texts me late or replies to me/tags me in Facebook. Love, love, love it. They just need to add scheduling as I'd like to have it automatically turn on when I'm at church every Sunday. So far you can only schedule one time range which I'm using for bed at the moment.

* Facebook is integrated just like Twitter. I find I don't use it much to post using the Notification Center widget because you can't tag people or post photos from it (that I can find at least). I do those two things most of the time when updating a status.

This is a step forward, but I really wish there was a way to customize this onto the home screen so there was no drill down at all involved.

They could have an icon like an app that you could activate and place wherever you wanted on the home screen. This is for Bluetooth and wifi on/off.

I love telling Siri to "take me home". :apple:

.

I'm not sure I like the fact that you have to download the whole album if you don't want to stream it instead of giving you the option of doing each track. :(

They also need to fix the the issue with not being able to delete albums.

So Maps and turn-by-turn directions work offline if you lose connection while using them? Wow!

What happens if you get a phone call during the turn-by-turn? Can you still use it?

Just tried that out, navigation won't be canceled. You can phone and navigate.

What does it look like? Does the phone screen come up or does it stay in Maps? And if the phone screen comes up, I'm assuming you can go back to Maps anyway?

In Safari 6.0 (on Mountain Lion), you can pinch out on the trackpad to get a side-scrollable view of all open tabs (like on iOS.) I like it, and I think iOS 6 should implement the same thing. It already has the tab view, I think it would be more convenient to pinch out in Safari.app rather than click the tab button.

Just a thought. :apple:

I didn't even realize that was no longer an option. Luckily as a workaround you can delete all music in Settings > General > Usage > Music > Edit or swipe Music to the right. It's all or nothing but it works. It's also the only way to delete audiobooks in iOS 5.x as well.

How does Siri work while using turn-by-turn? Like while you're using it, can you ask it to find a gas station along the way?

Also, can you add multiple destinations to your routes, or is it just the start and end points?

I have a strange one on beta 3...

I wanted to use my phone number for iMessage on both iPhone and iPad. So, as suggest, I turned off iMessage for both then re-enabled on both. But the iPhone (4S) stays stuck on "Waiting for activation." Even though it says that I receive and send iMessages just fine, and the settings for iMessage are exposed.

On the iPad, it let me choose to add my phone number, and to use my phone number to "start new conversations from" (formally was caller ID).

However, on my iPad my phone number is grayed out in the "you can be reached out" settings area, and does not appear at all in "start new conversations from."

So, strangely enough my iPad now shows it is configured start new conversations from my phone number and my iPhone is configured to start new conversations from my Apple ID.

Can anyone confirm that they can in fact start new conversations on both iPad and iPhone from phone number?

Also, if I change my iPad back to Apple ID my iPhone still won't allow phone number as start new conversations from. Weird.

Oh yea, one other thing: since beta 3 my iMessages conversations on my macs have been more synchronized. It too seems to be gettings messages sent to my phone number. No place to set phone as "start new conversations from" though. This is on Mountain Lion GM btw.

Reset Network Settings worked for me, see this thread.

When you open safari (atleast on ipad) if theres readint list or bookmarks to sync it shows a little animation, a little bar :)

Very disappointed that they changed auto-brightness back from how it was in beta 2. The auto brightness in beta 2 was great.
