lol looks like this what we are getting! dang i was hoping for a wider one, but oh well...sucks to suck

and as its been mentioned before! how is this what sj and jony ive have been working on for the past 2+ years??

but LOL at all those people saying it will fail- you kidding me? this thing is gonna sell like crazy! idk if it will break records but its gonna make apple a lot more $$$

It makes sense that things would dynamically size (not stretch awkwardly) to fit the larger screen, I mean.. that's what programs do on computers when you drag their edges, why wouldn't they on an iPhone screen?

Got in a funny argument about that with another developer once - they kept on going "BUT I WANT FULL CONTROL OVER HOW MY APP LOOKS!" .. yea..

dynamic UIs ftw.

So the 16:9 form factor will allow more vertical space for reading, will make a better movie watching experience, and uh.. allow a bigger screen without making the phone physically larger. What's the downside?
Really the only disadvantage is the need of developers to update their apps.

Sorry buddy, pixel perfect placement is wrong. Make sure your app is graceful about the number of pixels changing and offering a usable experience at any size.

No, 'perfect pixel placement' is not wrong if all the devices you're supporting are the same resolution. It's much, much easier, simpler and faster to code. Why burden yourself with unnecessary code if your target device is the same size?

This new screen resolution, if true, might possibly burden iOS developers with dealing with proportional GUIs instead of fixed GUIs.

I don't think the phone will be much longer. I think the screen will. Looking at my iPhone 4 if you just made the home button a tad smaller and moved it down a mm, and moved the ear piece/camera/etc up a little bit, you could probably throw a 4" screen in there without making the housing much bigger.

Why not an iPhone like this

Apple could hire this designer for its next iPhone models

Agreed.

Tons of upset and technologically jaded individuals jumping to conclusions in this thread.

Largely agreed. What I'm not seeing is enough of what people Would change, especially from an aesthetics standpoint.

For those of you who hate the idea of a taller phone...what would you have apple do? If you could decide the next re-design...just what would you do differently?

Just curious.

What a buch of whining over not much at all. Personally I'd rather be able to put my phone in my pocket. Tall fits better than wider. The Samsung I tried out was too cumbersome.

Apple will call it Retina. Since it's just a term Apple invented out of thin air, whatever they call Retina is Retina.

As opposed to most other words whose meaning was etched in the first stones of the earth? :D

I think battery life will be improved. Bigger screen means more space for more battery. The bigger screen coupled with the in cell tech would allow even more space. Hopefully battery draik with LTE will be countered with more capacity.

not if its thinner

I'm dying to find out how they accomplished this. I'd love to mess with another resolution in the Simulator...

I don't understand the reasoning behind the first picture as I have full access of the entire screen plus more with my thumb on my current iPhone. (in either hand) and my hands aren't above average I don't think.

My guess is that you might average-sized hands for people in your particular area of the world, but above-average-sized hands for a general human. Like, I'm guessing most people in North America outside of the west coast would have larger hands than the west coast.

Do watch where the meat of your thumb/palm goes if you try to reach the other side of the screen. I can touch the other side, but half the time I'll trigger a second touch because the bezel is too narrow.

This is what I also said. Even a grid view mode where you just see a grid of all of your apps with no space in between and no title would be cool. I was going to make a picture of it, but Photoshop CS6 is really slow for some reason (I will downgrade to CS5), and Acorn is terrible with high-res images.

haha it's okay.

A dense grid of icons would be nice, the phone's screen is able to detect touch fine enough to make the buttons much smaller, and I always thought the icons were a bit big considering the screen resolution.

Looks like I'll be getting a 4S.....!!!!

Taller iPhone = fake 4" screen = stupid.

16:9 is common for the high end Android phones (Galaxy Nexus, S III, HTC One X, and I'm sure many others; anything with a 1280x720 display), so if anything the current iPhone is a "fake" 3.5" screen. The new rumored 4" screen suddenly becomes directly comparable to the competition.

iPredict....

an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5s

one with regular screen, t'other with elongated screen

not quite sure how Apple will sell this configuration.....

Maybe the longer phone is to resemble a TV remote and will work the new iTV. That way when you upgrade to the iphone 5s you don't have to throw your old phone away, just use it with your TV as a remote.
