Anybody could come up with an impossible design like that. It's easy when you don't have to consider technical constraints. Why not make it totally bezel-less and 5mm thick while you're at it. Then you'd be the best designer in the world and Apple should hire you.
maybe, however I'm not so sure that this rumored taller iPhone will be ergonomic which is also an important technical constraint

This is terrible news! An elongated phone does not make sense at all! I like the current screen size. I am willing to go a bit bigger but I want it proportionally bigger. I know people complain about every new iPhone that comes out. But this is completely different. The iPhone 4/4s always looked sexy. This is plain stupid and I hope to God that somehow this isn't true. I don't know what I am going to do.

While I don't totally disagree, I'm not sure why if you think the 4/4S look "sexy" that a slightly bigger screen with a proportional resolution increase would be "plain stupid".

has anyone considered that all the leaks about the new iPhone design, including the resolution stretching discovered in iOS6 are in fact 'controlled' leaks by Apple?

Yes, I suspect this may well be the case.

This would distract us and give us all something to whine about while Apple secretly works on the actual new iPhone design which is completely different to what we are seeing!

Nope.

For those worried about the "long-phone" you should look at this thread.

Turns out the sony xperia play has the same 4 inch 16:9 screen, and it doesn't look to bad.

Well, this looks fine to me. I think the problem is not so much the screen as the shape of the phone around it. If Apple released something that looked like this:

Then I'm pretty sure folk would forget all about the screen being longer without being wider. (Picture came from Pocket-Lint)

I was mistaken about the MacBooks. But regardless, on 16:9 the following is true:

Wiki suggests that 16:9 has become the standard for smartphone devices as well, though it's not a sourced statement. 16:9 is the future. It's the way to go, especially as Apple will face increased competition in the tablet and smartphone space. Don't want to be the odd man out. And you can benefit from scaling apps to the iTV.

maybe you are right then. I was wrong once....

Oh no. How will some people ever hold this bigger device? How will they fit it in their pockets? A 4" phone? Outrageous. 3.5" is clearly the only size that is perfect for all hands and fingers. I can't believe this. I just can't. I thought Apple would keep their iPhone's the same size forever.

/end sarcasm

Meh, your fingers will be covering less of the screen on games where you use thumb joysticks :)

It's not so much as covering the screen, don't really care about that, it's about reaching the on screen touch targets which on games like Infinity Blade are spread out everywhere.

And I guess you agree about the "landscape web browsing" downside it doesn't fix. ;)

This thread is so familiar. It's the same thing as ever: Apple didn't design the product the exact way that people imagined it in their heads, and they're unhappy about that. When you want/expect one thing and Apple gives you another you're not going to be pleased, even if it's great.

But that disappointment passes and that's when people stop comparing it to their made-up iPhone in their head and just look at what's actually there and, so far in history, realise it's pretty darn good. This will likely be the same old story.

I think you're right. That phone looks brilliant; a larger display wouldn't change that.

Well who wouldn't want a screen size to decrease. I am not saying I wouldn't go bigger. I am just saying I am content now. But their is no other phone that is elongated like this. Movies and typing in landscape will make absolutely no sense.

Actually my original Droid is, but the screen is physically smaller (3.7").

They are simply releasing a whole bunch of fake leaks to mislead scamscum. What scamscum releasing a whole bunch of "new" phones with an extra row of icons and bam! Apple comes out with a taller AND wider iPhone with 5x5 rows of icons. Now Apple's iPhone is the perfect size while the rest of the droids bask in Apple's fake leaks.

You lost all credibility as soon as you wrote scamscum

So...

Nobody here (with the exception of 2 other posters so far on this thread) thought that this is a controlled leak by Apple? Apple could have set up this resolution in the simulator in order to make it seem in line with all the other controlled leaks so far.

Who's thumb is this?!?! I have small girly hands (like the dude on those Burger King commercials) and can reach corner to corner of my iPhone.

Yeah maybe if my fingers were locked in one place and I only had use of my thumb in a single sweeping motion, half circle something like this might be accurate, but come on now, who does that? I've seen this used as an example for one handed use and it's ridiculous. Makes me wonder how people can do anything these days.

Hope this isn't the beginning of the end for the iPhone dominance but I have a sneaky feeling it will be. Taller rather than larger screen is just a big disappointment for me.

Some of you need to go to AA (Apple Anonymous). You're chasing that original high of setting up your first iPhone. It's just gonna be a buzz now, considering we've been analyzing leaked parts for months!

"Put the Magic Mouse down! Seriously! Put it DOWN! Thank you.... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? You hid one in your sock?!?!?!"

Oh, and let's be real. If you currently have a Mac, iPad and iPhone I doubt there will be enough wrong with the new iPhone to persuade you to switch over to Android.
