In-house software continues to be problematic for Apple - time to out source.

It's not problematic! They want people to update! What is the big deal with updating your freaking iOS device? You'd be complaining if they never updated it and now you're complaining because they are! Man. Go bash samsung.

----------

I really hoping that is sarcasm.

That's not sarcasm. It's the truth. I mean, come on. If they didn't release updates you'd be complaining and they do and you're complaining.

----------

Yep, they'll upgrade and think "why didn't I do this sooner?".

----------

Time to move on. Update to iOS 7.

Thank you for agreeing.

I don't see why it's entitled or stubborn to resist "upgrading" to iOS 7 on devices that run iOS 7 poorly. Particularly my iPad 3, the first with retina display.

Even the latest version of iOS 7.1 runs sluggish on my friend's iPad 3 (who wishes he'd never installed it) compared to my iPad 3 I've kept on iOS 6.

Nothing to do with the look, it's entirely about the performance on this older device.

I must be naive. Why can't Apple just update the certificate?

Yes. There has to be a will to update it though. Apparently there isn't a will at Apple to do that.

BUT, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the move to iOS also DROP a few versions of their hardware? I mean, is Apple's 'fix' going to be telling a bunch of people to 'Buy New' rather than 'Update'?

Isn't that what Microsoft loves to do?

Boy MacRumors you aren't going to let this go are, you. Regarding this statement:

"There's a sizable contingent of iOS users who opted to stick with iOS 6 over iOS 7 due to the drastic visual changes introduced with the operating system update, so Apple's upgrade suggestion is likely to be unpopular with those users."

What is your source for this? I'd be curious to know where you're getting this statistic from or how you quantify "sizable contingent". Do you have stats of devices accessing your website where you're able to tell if they're an iOS 7 capable device running iOS 6? If iOS 7 is so horrible it certainly hasn't stopped Apple from having record iPhone sales - 43M in the last quarter and 51M in the quarter before that.

Haha, good move Apple, the certificate didn't really expire, they've done this deliberately!

Haha, I hope the next Apple upgrade will break your devices. Or you could at least fall and crack your iphone glass, or something ... :D

Since we are wishing for bad stuff happening to good people.

If your devices can't be upgraded to iOS 7, chances are it doesn't support FaceTime anyway because there's no front facing cam, or at least this is true for the 3GS. So Apple is pretty much just telling you to update to iOS 7.

On one hand, people should just upgrade. On the other hand, Apple actually killed a functionality that your phone originally came with and you paid for. There could be a class action lawsuit here.

Not really because they have a solution that restores the functionality. Plus what would the damages even amount to? 50 cents per person?

I'm on an iPad 2 and it runs fine. Just update to 7.1 and it'll run better

Exactly . If you'd be quiet and update, it'll work. They didn't break it

Nahh, Microsoft is trying to lower requirements so the newer OS's run better on old hardware. Heck, at their developer conference they were showing off Windows running on a piano.

The question is..why can't Apple just give iOS 6 capable devices like iPhone 4, 4S and 5 the choice of going to 6.1.6? Why do they HAVE to upgrade to iOS 7?

I get it, it's the latest and greatest but some people really don't like it. If 6.1.6 is available and supported, why can't I put it on my iOS device that I paid for? Why is that a big deal? If a fix exists for iOS 6, why can't I put it on my device if it's supported or basically, not an iPhone 5S? That's the problem here.

They probably also don't want to support 6 on older devices that can run 7 any more, and why should they?

Because it no longer works.

We're talking about an OS that's less than two years old. Apple is richer than many countries and can't put in the meager resources it would take to get this working again?

At least make 6.1.6 available to whoever wants it.

(I'm on iOS 7 personally and very much like it, but this is just petty on Apple's part in my opinion)

thats kinda "rude" though, its not like it hasnt worked before and just suddenly stopped. guess its too much work and money to fix it

Some people are lazy about updates. I know a few of them.

I have to wonder sometimes, if the ones that don't want change, are still watching VHS and listening to audio cassettes?

Can't create free software that's actually good enough to compel people to voluntarily upgrade to? Solution: Break the version they stayed with.

A big F U right from Apple's own mouth. When was the last time that Apple so directly disrespected its customers? I'm struggling to recall their service ever being so poor. Just offer the fix you created to iOS 6!

Struggling to recall? Sounds like Apple standard procedure to me...

Still blows my mind that people are holding onto iOS 6 this much.. seriously, it's not that big of a deal, just update already. New icons NOOO!! 7 is far superior in quality (especially since 7.1).
