The question is..why can't Apple just give iOS 6 capable devices like iPhone 4, 4S and 5 the choice of going to 6.1.6? Why do they HAVE to upgrade to iOS 7?

I get it, it's the latest and greatest but some people really don't like it. If 6.1.6 is available and supported, why can't I put it on my iOS device that I paid for? Why is that a big deal? If a fix exists for iOS 6, why can't I put it on my device if it's supported or basically, not an iPhone 5S? That's the problem here.

WELL, according to the fanboyz, you need to grow up and update.

Of all the people complaining here, I would like to know how many of them really have an actual problem thanks to this..

Tim cook at WWDC: "We've had an 100% adoption rate of iOS 7"
This is dictatorship at its finest.
"We broke something on the infrastructure and now you must upgrade your phone so we may cripple it further so it becomes obsolete quicker."

Can't create free software that's actually good enough to compel people to voluntarily upgrade to? Solution: Break the version they stayed with.

A big F U right from Apple's own mouth. When was the last time that Apple so directly disrespected its customers? I'm struggling to recall their service ever being so poor. Just offer the fix you created to iOS 6!

I don't think this was a malicious act by Apple, as you contend. Rather they discovered an issue in the software, released corrections for it in, and moved on. They're supporting their customers fully, just not in the way that you personally like.

I must be naive. Why can't Apple just update the certificate?

Because they're being pricks and don't want to do anything that isn't going to force people into their latest iOS release (which is crap). Screw you Apple. Luckily, I don't tend to use FaceTime on my iPhone.

Why should they?

They screwed up. It's only right and proper.

Why can't people just update. That's the whole point of an update. People like you get mad because Apple pushes out updates, yet samsung, who doesn't push updates, is totally unpatched and no one bashes them. Just update. It's not a big deal. So the icons change, so what? They're amazing. iOS 7 is by far the best.

Yeah, whatever.

Just fix the certificate Apple.

I'm with this guy. iOS 7 is very good. You're not upgrading because of new icons? Get over yourself.

I have upgraded. I like iOS 7. I just appreciate that many people don't. I feel people have a right to buy a device and use the very same firmware it came with without loss of features. I also expect updates for older OSs to continue to fix bugs and improve security. Unfortunately Apple do nothing but ditch their previous software and then remove services to make it hard do achieve tasks that you could do when you first bought the device.

Whereas I wouldn't expect Apple to support services for iOS 6 forever, the removal of them is far far too premature. Even more premature than the removal of the iTunes Store in iTunes 9.

Still blows my mind that people are holding onto iOS 6 this much.. seriously, it's not that big of a deal, just update already. New icons NOOO!! 7 is far superior in quality (especially since 7.1).

Yes, I agree, iOS 7.0 wasn't brilliant at all. However, with iOS 7.1 installed it's a lot better. People, JUST UPGRADE!

Boy MacRumors you aren't going to let this go are, you. Regarding this statement:

"There's a sizable contingent of iOS users who opted to stick with iOS 6 over iOS 7 due to the drastic visual changes introduced with the operating system update, so Apple's upgrade suggestion is likely to be unpopular with those users."

10% of +200M users?? That seems sizable to me!!

I smell class action lawsuit in 3, 2, 1...

Btw, for everyone purposely staying on iOS 6 because of the design changes what are you going to do when iOS 8 rolls around? And iOS 9? Because Apple's not going backwards. iOS 6 style isn't coming back anytime soon. If it bothers you THAT much perhaps you need to go Android or Windows Phone. I think Apple has bigger things to worry about than the most likely small number users clinging to iOS 6.

This is dictatorship at its finest.
"We broke something on the infrastructure and now you must upgrade your phone so we may cripple it further so it becomes obsolete quicker."

iOS6 is already fully obsolete. It will not get the bug fixes, feature improvements, etc. By using it you reduce your user experience while also leaving yourself open to bug exploits (which are known due to their correction in iOS7).

Bravo! I'm not sure that this is correct, but it is a sensible (read: non-conspiracy theory), and concise description that really makes sense to me. Just wanted to give some kudos.

Thanks! :D

While I agree it might not be completely correct (only Apple really knows), to me it makes the most sense.

You're exactly right. It's not as if the customer owns the device or anything. I mean it would be totally different if the device was the personal property of the customer. When people own things they can do with them what they like. If they like their iDevices "as is" they can keep them that way. But only if they own them. These devices are on loan from Apple.:D

How dare they not take Apple's recommendation. If Apple says upgrade, then upgrade. After all, they know what's best for you. Regardless of your use case, workflow, and get this one... preference, they know what's best for you.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I've never had a use for FT so this doesn't bother me. But it would piss me off if I was forced to upgrade when I didn't want to do so. I'm fortunate they haven't obsoleted anything I use.

Incorrect. As the AppleCare support terms and conditions clearly states:

4.2 Technical Support. The Plan does not include:

(ii) Issues that could be resolved by upgrading software to the then current version.

So, based on the issue at hand, they owe you nothing. iOS 7 fixes the issue, therefore, you cannot harass them to fix older software. PERIOD.

It also states:

To receive service or support under the Plan, you agree to comply with the following:

(v) Update software to currently published releases prior to seeking service.

Therefore, BEFORE YOU EVEN CONTACT THEM, you agreed to update to iOS 7. If you don't agree to these terms, too bad. Stop using your device. You originally agreed when you opened the box and turned it on. Stop whining and get over it.

If your devices can't be upgraded to iOS 7, chances are it doesn't support FaceTime anyway because there's no front facing cam, or at least this is true for the 3GS. So Apple is pretty much just telling you to update to iOS 7.

On one hand, people should just upgrade. On the other hand, Apple actually killed a functionality that your phone originally came with and you paid for. There could be a class action lawsuit here.

Think it's referring to iPod Touch - all iPhones have to be upgraded to iOS7

Actually, it's probably that they've painted themselves into a corner in terms of how a device's update schedule will prioritize the newest compatible version. Devices that can't take iOS 7 will take 6.1.6. Devices that can take iOS 7 will ONLY offer 7. Like right now I have several gigabytes of iPhone storage wasted by iOS 7 because I don't want that POS.

10% of 200 million users are running iOS 7 capable devices but haven't upgraded? BS. That number obviously includes devices that weren't eligible to receive iOS 7.

This is realy unfair! I FaceTime my aunt all the time who is old and uses an iPad 2. I haven't upgraded it to IOS7 as she cannot understand how to use it - she is old and just doesnr get technology! I cannot spend another few weeks teaching her as I did - although everything is kinda the same - the way she works is off by colours and everything! This means that the iPad I brought her is now useless for what I brought it for
Yes I can put Skype on it - but it's not as easy to use as FaceTime and there are other services BUT again the whole reason for FaceTime was to make it easier for her
Thanks apple - you have made my day even worse

Apple sold 43M phones this past quarter and 51M the quarter prior. How is that possible if the OS these phones are running is a POS?

But you probably are right in terms of how devices get updated.

You're talking about contracts and policies that are in Apple's own personal interest, forced upon people through EULA-style sneakwrap licenses. The people complaining are talking about ethical behavior. If iOS 7 didn't suck so much, there'd be a lot fewer complaints here.

No, not really.

iOS 7 adoption is at >80% of compatible devices. Of those remaining I doubt many are consciously choosing to avoid iOS 7. Most are probably just lazy and haven't bothered to do the upgrade. That leaves just a small fraction of users who are clinging to iOS 6 on purpose, and only a subset of them might be using FaceTime. So in all, this impacts a small small number of users and the fix is easy. So deal with it.

I know several who legitimately just dislike iOS 7 and have not upgraded. They genuinely don't like the stylized bright white on top of more white look and on top of that they don't want the lag that has come that they've gotten to experience first hand with others of our friends who have updated (iOS 4, 4S, and 5 even).

congrats for being the only human being on the planet who reads those things :p;)
