Does this work even if you remove the sim first? That's what I want to know. Can you remove the sim, then hit Wipe on icloud, and try to do a DFU on it? Turn wifi off too so it has no data connection.

Now, what I have understood is that even if you (or someone else) resets the phone, it will still be locked till the iCloud is authenticated.

This is not the case at the moment. Right now, if you want, you can put your phone in DFU, wipe it clean, change the sim and re-activate.

When my phone was stolen - or lost? - I called AT&T and they blocked the phones IMEI number, so if anyone puts a sim into it and turns it on, they'll get a nice message saying that the phone can't be used.

1) when u try to reset all contents and settings if u have a pass code on, u will need it first. Then if your find my friend is also on you will need to turn that off but that requires the iCloud credentials.

2) even if you switch sims, the activation lock remains. It is most likely tied to imei not your sim.

Just restored from 7.0 to 6.1.3 using DFU.

I had "find my iPhone" activated but did not wipe it over icloud or anything and it still asked for my apple id and password while activating both in iTunes (but never recognized my password) and while activating via the device itself.

So downgrading (while possible at all) will not circumvent activation lock at all. And it works without explicit activation.

They added a password to disable the "find my friends" option.. but that can be circumvented by just disabling location services all together, that was my point.

You can freely disable location services BUT if your find my phone service is turned ON, disabling LOCATION SERVICES DOES NOTHING to that. You cannot circumvent the security lock just by disabling location services IF you already have find my phone service turned on.

That is good then.

I restored using DFU mode to downgrade back to 6, and iTunes required me to log in to iCloud to activate the phone after it finished restoring iOS 6 (but before restoring my backup). So yes, iOS 7 requiring you to log in to reactivate a phone with find my phone persists through DFU restore.

That only works if the phone remains in the US.

"Lost mode" doesn't seem to be working exactly as expected.

Scenario 1:
iPhone unlocked and on home screen
Activate lost mode
Result: works as expected, locks the screen and requires pass code.

Scenario 2:
iPhone locked (but recently unlocked, such that it's within my pin timeout)
Activate lost mode
Result: displays the lost mode message and call option, but does NOT require a pin code.

Anyone else seeing this?

Shame Find My Phone doest work after you wipe the phone remotely.
Seems like that would be a BIG part of this.

I really could have used it because my phone was stolen just last week and the thieves took out the SIM so I couldn't even track my phone.

I had a black iPhone 5 and now had an excuse to pick up a white iPhone 5 because it seems to fit better with iOS 7 :)

But wait, what if I want to sell my device?

Currently I use restrictions and a 7 character pass-code as theft prevention; if they are able to unlock the device, they still cannot modify accounts, turn off location services or delete applications. I think this is good enough to deter a run-of-the-mill phone thief?

Anyway what if I want to sell my device to someone else? Is there some type of work-around I wonder?

What do you mean? If you erase it normally (without using Find My iPhone's 'erase' feature), it will be a clean iPhone for anyone to use.

It's only if you wipe the iPhone with Find My iPhone's new feature will it make it unable to connect to the server without the owner's ID/password.

What if I'm buying someone's phone? How would I know if they were planning to screw me later?

What if you had them go to settings and delete the phone from their iCloud account. They wouldn't be able to put it in lost mode then. (I assume) the first thing I'd do is sign in with my iCloud info too.

Didn't know if this has been posted yet so sorry if this has been mentioned. When I downgraded to iOS 6 my phone was still plugged into iTunes and I was prompted for my apple ID and password to continue. I wonder if its the same if you complete setup on the device...I would think so because it would contact Apple servers during "waiting for activation."

Before selling iPhone.....

Notes

Activation Lock, a new feature of Find My iPhone, is turned on automatically when Find My iPhone is enabled on any device running iOS 7. Activation Lock requires users to enter their Apple ID and password to turn off Find My iPhone, sign out of iCloud, erase the device, or reactivate the device after an erase. It’s important to sign out of iCloud, or choose Settings > General > Erase All Content and Settings, before transferring a device to a new user to allow them to use the device.

I went ahead and did a "wipe device" on iCloud.com on my own iPhone 5. I quickly turned off the iPhone BEFORE I even hit the wipe button. Then I started the phone in DFU mode and connected to itunes to try to RESTORE to iOS 7.0 clean restore.

The result is impressive: I cannot get pass this screen because the crook will have to know your iCloud user name AND the password. Good luck thugs!

Edit: I think if someone is able to load up iOS 6.1, perhaps this will be ineffective. But you know apple servers will block out 6.1.X when iOS 7 is ready. So it's basically a very effective anti-theft security measure!

Just restored to 6.1 from iOS 7. Activation Lock is still very much there.

Before anyone asks
Download the new find my IP app from within your dev account portal
Installation Instructions
Follow the instructions below to install the Find My iPhone app on your iOS 7 beta device.

1. Delete any previous versions of the Find My iPhone app from your iOS 7 device.

BUT one thing is that IF you just do a normal RESTORE (home button while plugging in your iPhone), itunes will complain you need to REMOVE the "find my iPhone" first! (my first post above tells you this) - but if you DFU mode restore, I don't think that applies.

That makes sense. You are the owner so why not turn it off before so it will reactivate right off.

But the boys what would be doing a DFU to get past your passcode lock, that's a different kettle

You have to have a data connection to get to the Apple server to activate phone and since this is server side it will kick in.

Which is the point of it. They did this cause they were getting bashed about how folks could just take it to another country and get around local carrier blacklists. Now they can't cause the phone won't activate at all (provided the owner turns it on etc)

This is a beta, might not be the same at final release. Especially if all these developers around here report the bug.

Great, I think that's the answer I was hunting for. Thanks.

I think people don`t get it. There is no way to ensure that the phone will be trackable when lost, even if your location services are password protected. Any thief just has to pop the SIM and it`s offline(unless apple builds the SIM into the phone).

This new method will at least ensure that the phone will be a brick if it does ever get stolen and lands in someone elses hands.

Although I would like some manner of lost phone activation screen that would say please enter your password to activate the phone(as it currently does) and add or "if this phone was found please contact Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo XXX@aaa.ccc (212) 555-1212"

Now we just need a way to determine if the seller is in good standing with their carrier before buying. Id love to be CERTAIN that a phone that activates under my account WILL NEVER turn into an $$$ brick because of some idiot...
