Passcode to remove sim! LMFAO!!!!!
Yep, Siri will ask you for the password before you poke the sim out! LOL

I think some kind of lock would work. It wouldn't have to be large. I'd rather that than have a thief be able to stop me from locating my phone.

To be honest, the SIM card is outdated. They could easily find a way around using them.

Now you are thinking like Microsoft. Lock for sim? Please, lets be real here!
A thief can easily "kill" signal. No need to take sim out. All you need is special foil to wrap it in. lets just be practical, locking sim is idiotic idea that would never work.

Here's something to note: you don't have to wipe the phone for activation lock to occur - all I had to do was DFU restore it and it forced me to enter my password.

Activation lock doesn't require to contact the iPhone. It just need to send info to apple server. So whenever the iPhone required to contact apple server, it will ask for your username and password.

Thief can try to hide the phone location (turn of gps, internet, etc) but they still won't be able to activate the phone as it needs to make contact to apple server.

With iOS7, the best the thief can get is to cannibalized the components minus the logicboard.

As soon as a couple hundred thousand people buy iPhones on eBay and start to complain about not being able to get past Activation Lock (i.e., they unknowingly bought a stolen phone), the black market will dry up in a hurry and only respectable dealers/sellers will be able to sell them.

A thief will find it more and more difficult to find buyers (i.e., quick cash). Tearing a phone apart and locating a buyer for parts only is going to be a lot more challenging (quick cash option...gone!).

I'm excited about Activation Lock, and can't wait for the tide to turn in the consumers direction.

I don't think you are being real. 95% of thieves can barely spell Apple, I don't think they'll know about special foil.

No need to **** on an idea because you lack the necessary brain to visualise.

sooooo...what if many people don't remember their own passwords? (it's totally possible).

is it then a brick? or can it be restored somehow at the Apple Store? (you have proven that this really is your phone. you registered your name to the serial, etc.)

Yea but I think if you can login to iCloud and do a remote wipe, I'm pretty sure that person can remember the Apple ID password :D

If u forget your iTunes password, then u go through the motions of resetting your password with apple.
Your phone would not be bricked unless u tried to wipe it.
If u forgot your iTunes password, hopefully you would automatically try to wipe the phone.

ok, lets be real then.

To have a sim lock would mean a physical barrier inside the phone that would be locked and unlocked by iOS (as you wanted). Mechanical things break - there is no way around that (home button is one of the most failures in iPhone).
So, if the lock failed or misfunction then you would need to go to apple store for them to fix it. And here is another problem. Up until now Apple store werent able to even fix broken home button - they always replaced the phone. I understand that that is about to change but still.
So I can use my brain and by doing that i realise so many reasons why that is a very bad idea. As I said, you are thinking like Microsoft and not Apple.

Well, I did say that a SIM isn't even nessecary.

The buttons break because they're designed to break. Apple want the buttons to break after the years warranty is up. That way people buy a new one.

In regards to a lock, spring loaded with a catch that just moves a mm on a pivot would work quite adequately.

But as I have previously stated, no sim at all would be a better solution.

Couple counter-points:
1) No SIM makes the international travel situation a lot more annoying. And it isn't the direction Mobile Operators are going (Verizon now uses SIMs when they didn't before).
2) Why even bother to lock the SIM when you can blacklist the device so that operators reject the device? That's what IMEI blacklists handle, and don't require changes to the device.

Between the activation lock, and IMEI blacklists, a physical SIM lock is superfluous. At least until we get better data about theft once the activation lock is in the wild.

Well shoot... I was given an iPhone 3G years ago as an iPod... it had previously been stolen, (came from a kid at a correctional facility, it is believed that he stole it) I used DFU and iTunes to get it brand new...

Nice to see this going away. GO APPLE:apple::apple::apple:

With regards to the international travel thing, there would probably be someway of giving your device details to another network temporarily.

The point of the sim, is that thieves can take the sim out and not connect to wifi which renders find my iPhone useless. If a sim was kept in, and the phone required a passcode to turn off, you would be able to locate thieves and notify police to retrieve the device.

Sarcasm?

Hmm this is a good point, if they get the phone, turn it off straight away (which they always seem to) and only plug it into itunes in DFU to restore it, is this whole thing null and void?

Restoring in iTunes requires an internet connection, so it would still get locked when they try to restore it.

The only thing you could do is turn on airplane mode and use it as an iPod Touch

Ha, finally someone who knows sarcasm...

That kid might not have stolen it in the first place if "activation lock" was around.:D Someone would not be missing their iPhone 3G. (was that thing missable?)

Yes, I was being sarcastic, and I do believe this is a good thing. I for one do not want my precious iPhone 5 stolen, unless they leave a 64 GB in it's place.;)

(never again to buy a 16 GB phone. Lesson learned)

So what would be the proper procedure to release the phone from my ownership if the day I want to sell my iPhone 5?

Depends how you intend to wipe it:

- If via iTunes Restore, sign out from your iCloud account first
- If via the device (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content & Settings), it will sign out from iCloud for you.

Not sure if anyone tested this out yet.
Went from iOS 7 Beta 3 back to iOS 6.1.4 and iTunes came up with the activation lock.

I am having trouble with this on beta 6. Apple has removed the option to switch "activation lock" off under settings. It is now an automatic part of "Find My iPhone".

I am preparing my iPhone 4 for sale and I have switched off Find my iPhone, signed out from iCloud, resetting the phone while entering my password.

When it boots again it still asks for my password. It has been removed from Find my iPhone from iCloud, but the activation lock is still there.

I have restored the phone to iOS 6, but the problem remains. It can not be activated without my password.

How can I remove it? I can not see how, I think I have done everything there is to try...

Is it a bug in iOS 6? Problems with Apple's servers? Will it not be possible to remove it before iOS 7 goes official?

Right now my phone is "unsellable"...

I hope Apple will advertise this thing all over the world as the next big thing since sliced bread, so thieves will outright avoid stealing the phone.

Wouldn't want my phone to get stolen by some petty pickpocket who doesn't know what's up or down on the device. Sure, nobody else can use it, but that doesn't pay my lost phone.

The power of Activation Lock. This actually shows that Activation Lock works.. I hope you find a way to remove it, seems like you would try what I would try to remove Activation Lock.

I would definitely have to agree on this and I can't wait. Consumers and thieves will start to rethink on posting and buying things off Craigslists or classifieds. I do not want consumers to fall for thieves who have Activation Lock and spread the word. I want Apple to actually use Activation Lock as a "killer feature" for an ad campaign..

Erase your iPhone from settings> general> reset> erase all content and settings.

At this point it would ask for your Apple ID password before it can commence the erase; once your password is entered, the iPhone will be erased and you're 101% in the clear.

You can also wipe your iPhone from iCloud on the web, since you have to enter your Apple ID, you're confirming to wipe all the data + entering the last Apple ID used + removing it from iCloud forever. Anyone can restore and sync that iPhone and use it. One very bad thing I've discovered from testing Activation Lock last week. Its best never to wipe your iPhone from iCould anymore, if you do lose it or get it stolen.

^^^^
You guys can give the this a shot, beware that you can't re-activate your iMessage and Facetime for your cellphone number for 24 hours and only your Apple ID can be used for the time being.

Not sure if I like that last line. It's great that someone else will never be able to use the phone again. At the same time, corporate iPhone owners would want to remove their company data off the phone before it falls into someone else's hand.

btw "never to wipe your iPhone from iCould" did you mean remote wipe from iCloud or remove the device from your list of trusted devices?
