So, no visual improvements other than lock screen's slider?

I wish they'd changed Voice Memos icon already, it's like amateur hour..

Lock screen doesn't stay on if being interacted with without unlocking. Beta 3 fixed this but it is doing it again in b4.
I remember someone mentioning this in relation to beta 3, but it never worked for me that way even with beta 3 (or now with beta 4)--essentially the lock screen will go dark unless you are almost continuously interacting with it (by moving it around a bit or something like that).

----------

Is there any change to the calling, in which they removed contact photo in beta 3?
It's still the same as it was in beta 3 (unfortunately).

Since B3 contained "Parallax Off" while setting a wallpaper, if you turn it off does it scale properly like previous iOS versions? Or does it still zoom in.
Yes, you can scale the wallpaper to whatever you want again. Once you zoom out enough, the parallax setting is automatically turned off.. however, even zoomed all the way out there is still a slight parallax effect. I'm glad they added this to 7.1! was one of my biggest complaints of 7.

Seems to fix a lot of animation glitches. Also the flip from portrait to landscape is pretty much flawless (iPhone 4S Using iOS 7.1 Beta 4)

Still see a bug where, especially after a restart, in the Today section of Notification Center the Tomorrow Summary will appear directly below Today Summary and above reminders and calendar, instead of being essentially at the bottom below it all.

Is it me or the app titles look different? I can't tell what's the different though

I don't think this grid existed before...

Such a stupid change. What is going on in Cupertino?

I noticed that, in 7.0.4, if I set a picture taken with my iPhone on someone on my contact list this is showing full screen during a incoming call, otherwise, if I set a picture, no matter how big it is, from contacts application on my Mac it is showing in a small square on the top right of the screen. Can't figure why this behavior.

I found in the alarms section, if an alarm is turned off then the background is darker like it is asleep and fades into the background. When it is on, it's all bright and white.

Something related to that new slider most likely. Or perhaps a bug that hasn't been fixed yet.

Honestly, it's actually one of the saner changes Apple has made in 7.1. It ensures that the call dialogue will always be legible, even if the other person's contact picture had a light background. I had one contact whose picture would make the battery indicator and any text near the status bar illegible when on the lock screen (which was usually the state my phone was in because I often talk to this person using my handsfree set in the car).

It looks like in 7.1 Apple is slowly realizing that, while a "dynamic OS" sounds great on paper, there is an inherent downside as far as usability is concerned. Since the OS changes based on the user's wallpaper, email, web content, etc., it is impossible for Apple to design UI elements that will be easily visible with high contrast in all situations. Look at control center. It looks fantastic on the home screen (especially with a darker wallpaper). But, open it on a predominantly white web page and suddenly any of the active quick toggles become rather hard to see against the white background. IOS 7 is full of these low contrast, white-on-grey or bright neon-on-white situations.

The Apple execs spent quite a bit of time during last year's WWDC trashing the "ornamentation" that characterized iOS in the Jobs/Forstall era. But they forgot that all the "excessive" pre-rendered elements of iOS 6 actually served an extremely useful purpose: they kept the OS legible and useable regardless of what the user was doing. Were the glossy bars on the lock screen completely necessary? No. But, the dark background they provided ensured the clock was always visible, regardless of what wallpaper you chose. Did the old opaque in-app navigation bars provide a "sense of your content" (a BS marketing term if ever I heard one)? Nope, and I'm not sure why I need to see a blurred image of my text to know I'm reading my email. But it sure used to be a whole lot easier to quickly distinguish useful buttons like back, forward, and reply from my content because they didn't look like my content. I think iOS 7.1 shows Apple is slowly realizing that not everything about the iOS 6 days was a bad thing. We are finally getting more higher-contrast situations, toned down neon colors, and some UI changes that show they might finally be thinking again about how people actually use their phones. The changes so far are definitely baby steps. But, at least they're steps in the right direction.

Amateur hour is Newsstand. Especially on the iPad.
Big thick grey bars? Really?
Has Newsstand changed at all in these betas?
I only use the stupid thing because the NY Times is only available there. And since we now get thrown back into the fugly interface every time an included app is closed, I get reminded how little thought and design must have gone into it.

It's pretty clear to me that Apple's optimizations are now making way into the kernel and OS ... Excellent battery ... And no , you don't need to spend 24 hours to see that .... Because I dfu and setup on all updates, I can directly attest to comparison between B1 thru B4 .. And it's staggering ... It's holding battery for way longer and in almost no signal area (which essentially drains more battery)

You guys are making all excited for the actual release. Keep the comments coming. :)

It's been like that since iOS 7.0

Does anyone crash their iPad when using 5 finger pinch to minimize an app? The closing animation will get stuck and the device becomes unresponsive.

It happened to me on every release of iOS7 so far - often enough to be frustrating. Wondering if it was still happening on this beta?
