This is my most-wanted feature on iOS. I hate entering a passcode -- especially since I know that 4 digits is not secure and a regular passcode is too cumbersome to enter all the time.

Oh yes, give the NSA your finger prints... It's not like they STORE IT in a huge facility filled with computers with the equivalent storage as 32 gb iPhones stacked to the moon and a bit more.

apple would undoubtedly not be storing your actual prints, but rather the a hashed and encrypted representation. further, apple has shown in the past that they do not retain much of their customers' personal usage data (unlike google) thus is unable to hand it over if asked. so im comfortable with their privacy protection policies.

Fingerprint scanners have been around for decades. Tell me again who is living in the past by thinking they're a great, futuristic way of doing things.

touchscreens had been around a long time before the iphone as well. they pretty much sucked.

Fingerprint Recognition: The feature everyone knows about, but no one really wants.

Also, any feature that requires you to have your phone out of a protective case is going to be instantly turned off for me. There's no gimmicky feature in the world worth a shattered screen and the associated cost of repairs.

Sounds like that you also need to wear a full armor all the time, otherwise how about a shattered elbow, or a shatter face of you? If you can manage to not fall down so often, why cannot you manage to keep good grasp of your phone, unless you don't really cherish it, then in that case you've already decided to be careless about spending extra money on repairing the phone when it is damaged.

You know that the theif could just as easily threathen your passcode lock out of you? Perhaps the threat could be cutting off your finger. This really isn't all that less secure. Your average theif might hold out behind you to try and see you enter your passcode lock. They won't be sitting in the parking lot with bolt cutters to steal your thumb... so that they can .. what? See your cat photos? Post on your facebook?

exactly. the weirdo technodorks on this site are so out of touch w/ reality. theyll pretend anything to remain a pessimist know-it-all...

oh really? the NSA's purpose is to protect a system that makes 1% rich and 99% poor - and Apple is a communist company? lol. The NSA, Apple, Samsung, MS, Google etc. have all the same interest. It is called profit and protecting this way of thinking. Whatever it takes. Wake up!

Nothing you said directly relates to my points. You're talking about the NSA potentially profiteering on citizen information.

WOW... well said.

Different countries - different issues! Over here in Germany the NSA scandal – as in they listen in to any conversation – worldwide - is the main news for the past few days. People over here are VERY, VERY upset. Looking at the most trusted source of news in the USA – The Daily Show – it is not an issue at all in the States. Granted: the German Government pretends to know “nothing” – and it is just a blatant lie, and yes, the German Government is not to be trusted and yes, they just play games in order to get more influence.

I love Apple products; I love their quality, ease of use and their designs. I always followed Apple since the Apple II and I bought most of their (overpriced) products.

To me, as you can tell, an older Apple user, in the past few weeks a red line has been crossed. And that happened by Microsoft, Google and Apple. To my knowledge they all are giving my data, my contacts, my calendar and my pictures and my ways of using my devices to the NSA, other government agencies in the US – and bc the US made deals with German authorities – also to “my” government. Enjoy knowing my habits of watching porn!

However, I started worrying, looking into the future: Governments will become more weak bc they are too running out of resources as in money– same time the Internet will never forget, nor will the NSA!

Imagine: lets say you are living in Greece, you watch porn (like almost everybody male does), the Greek government is part of the NSA scheme and Greek goes bust and they cannot pay their secret service any longer. One has to make a living, right? What will - in this case – prevent those imagined guys from the Greek secrets service to “monetize” their knowledge about me to make a living aka blackmail me? Do you get my drift? Greece will be everywere soon!

How about: some guys show up at my door and tell me: you know mr. xxx: we know that you told your wife you are all faithful but last month you watched 10 dirty movies and chatted with four girls about you know what!

My response? I tell them: it is a lie! Their answer: well, we have your fingerprints on your Iphone 5S….any questions?

To me the only answer is to go low-tech; buy a phone (and yes they will record every word), but that is it. I decided not to buy any more (overpriced!) Stasi-tools from Apple or others like Samsung or MS. The Stasi was the very much-feared secret service of communist East Germany.

Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi.

Enough is enough! Apple now recording my finger-prints and giving it to the NSA (yeah – you won’t bc of the security settings – lol – nobody sane believes you anymore) and on top of that me even being over charged for the device: no way!

Apple, Microsoft, Google and others will loose customers bc of their betrayal to their customers. People are VERY pissed! The "free world" behaves like China!

We have become sheep and I do not trust the shepherds!

Only a fool pays tons of cash freely to get spied on - and forget the nice colorful icons of IOS 7 - those are like the worthless marbles your forefathers gave to the native Americans.

Right, because you are the head of NSA, so the information in your phone is so important that someone is willing to commit a fatal felony for it. Oh, and you are one of the very rare NSA heads that your fingers are very easy to get stolen by someone else. So right!

Yep you are right, it's very plausible, thanks for pointing that out. This gives me definite 2nd thoughts on getting a 5s for sure.

Would this fingerprint sensor tech. really fit under the home button as it is now? The charging cable plugs in kind of directly under it and I'm sure takes up a lot of space. Any thoughts?

Not everyone needs a otter box or life proof case, the majority of people are fine with a case + screen protector!

You are right. I've gone months with just Zagg shields on the front and back of my 4S. When I feel like a case - Magpul Executive Field Case.

I've never understood putting such a thin, artfully designed :apple: phone is those big thick cases unless you work construction/maintenance etc.

How hard are people on their phones?

That is still a variable, you may not necessarily talk, maybe you are a hardened war veteran who has gone through torture training. Additionally it would take more time and facilities, certainly a LOT more trouble than simply chopping your finger off.

1) this topic is absolutely ridiculous. you are not a special agent. nobody is chopping off your finger. most thieves are amateurs.

2) if some bad guy was indeed ready to chop off your finger for your phone, he could threaten to do so today -- and you would give him your PIN before letting him do it.

you know what i love about you professional haters? you havent even seen, let alone used, Upcoming Apple Feature X, yet are totally comfortable classifying it as a gimmick. it's hilarious.

me, id love to check it out. if it offers value, ill use it. more, my case doesnt interfere w/ the home button so no problem.

----------

I really hope Apple does this right. Or it could be like the Siri enhancement with the 4S that ends up being useless.

have never found Siri useless. routinely use it for short one-handed texts, setting appointments, setting reminders, and music selection in the car (my head unit supports eyes free). as a feature i find value in it and would choose it as an included feature over not having it.

----------

I re-enter a 4 digit pin every time I unlock my phone.

I've certainly never thought to myself "Gosh this is tedious -- why can't someone invent a way to do this in such a way that adds new piece of hardware that can malfunction and render my phone unusable."

then you must be used to doing routine, mundane things w/o thinking about it very hard.

Yeah but why take the risk? I would very much miss my finger, it's worth more to me than a phone. Plus how do you know I would give up my PIN?

well then your knowledge of things is wrong. apple has vocally denied giving over anything to the NSA. more, they point out how they dont retain all user data such that it remains "disposable" and is physically impossible to give to the govt.

Enough is enough! Apple now recording my finger-prints and giving it to the NSA (yeah – you won’t bc of the security settings – lol – nobody sane believes you anymore)

you have a general lack of understanding on how scanning works. your prints arent stored. the device will store a hashed & encrypted mathematical representation of your localized print, which the sensors will match to your physical one. JUST LIKE HOW PASSWORDS WORK ON EVERY ECOMMERCE SITE! apple wont have a big folder of GIFs on the cloud for NSA to copy on request.
