Why on earth did you switch from your Nokia 6110 to an iPhone in the first place. Obviously, you are more content with the past than the future.

Fingerprint scanners have been around for decades. Tell me again who is living in the past by thinking they're a great, futuristic way of doing things.

Yeah I thought the incredibly insecure nature of fingerprint recognition was outlined in action movies? I mean a thief simply needs to cut off your finger and voila, instant access to your phone.

You know that the theif could just as easily threathen your passcode lock out of you? Perhaps the threat could be cutting off your finger. This really isn't all that less secure. Your average theif might hold out behind you to try and see you enter your passcode lock. They won't be sitting in the parking lot with bolt cutters to steal your thumb... so that they can .. what? See your cat photos? Post on your facebook?

No doubt they have, heck even the Atrix I believe had a finger print sensor on its power button. It is very easy for anyone to take all the available tech and just slap it on to a phone.

The difference here? Apple knows how to do things right. If they do implement a finger print sensor it will be easy to use, it will provide an excellent experience and wont just be slapped on randomly and not having any supporting software.

There is a HUGE difference between doing something and doing it right.

Do I smell NFC payment integration?

I don't smell NFC. I have a feeling this might not happen for some time, if ever.
So far NFC hasn't got a very good track record regarding security, and despite the fact that Apple is using some unfinished features (like Siri and of course Apple Maps), I think on this issue Apple will stay on the safe side.
I could of course be completely wrong, and Apple managed to make it really safe, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

[…] Apple, Microsoft, Google and others will loose customers bc of their betrayal to their customers. People are VERY pissed! The "free world" behaves like China!

We have become sheep and I do not trust the shepherds!

You've written many incorrect things. For one, Apple (and the others?) don't give the NSA information; Apple themselves have even officially denied. The NSA gets the information before it even gets to Apple through network cables.

Also, you implied that Apple is designing this fingerprint scanner for the purpose of giving the NSA everyone's fingerprints. That just doesn't make sense.

They can do that now, if a thief threatens to cut off my fingers, or give them the unlock code, I'll give them the code.

Not using one is silly to me -- you're carrying around a device that has an $800 replacement cost. Not taking simple, low-cost steps to ensure it remains functional seems tremendously foolhardy.

I have owned an iPhone since the 3GS and at most have had a simple Belkin case nothing more and they have all worked perfectly fine.

If you are using your phone in harsh environments, or on a boat, in a construction area etc then I understand. But I really do not see the use of a Otterbox case for every day use, most cases will survive a drop from shoulder height.

This would make a lot of sense on the iPad (hiding those pictures nobody was meant to see...), but I doubt people are actually sharing a mobile phone.

I carry my device around naked (except I have a ghost armoured screen). That being said, I also opted for AppleCare+. So it's only $50 if I have a big drop.

This will help the NSA get fingerprints for future criminals, gotta get them while they're still young. :p

as if the nsa is about criminals!

as you can learn from history: when their system over government, from with they benefit, becomes endangered, the ywill do to you what they already did to ppl in other places on that planet. Egypt can happen in the States easily!

They would have to have your phone and you in order to do that. If that was the case, currently, why not simply torture you until you give up you 4 digit pass-code?

That is still a variable, you may not necessarily talk, maybe you are a hardened war veteran who has gone through torture training. Additionally it would take more time and facilities, certainly a LOT more trouble than simply chopping your finger off.

I re-enter a 4 digit pin every time I unlock my phone.

I've certainly never thought to myself "Gosh this is tedious -- why can't someone invent a way to do this in such a way that adds new piece of hardware that can malfunction and render my phone unusable."

Have you ever thought to your self "Gosh this is tedious -- why can't someone invent a way to do this that is reliable and stable"

oh really? the NSA's purpose is to protect a system that makes 1% rich and 99% poor - and Apple is a communist company? lol. The NSA, Apple, Samsung, MS, Google etc. have all the same interest. It is called profit and protecting this way of thinking. Whatever it takes. Wake up!

I'd rather they drop the whole finger print security thing and just make the home button light up for notifications.

The title should read "Apple copies Samsung's fingerprint scanner"

actually, no, once it comes out it will be more like: "Apple Correctly Implements a Feature Others Struggled to Make Useful"

----------

Seems this will be a iPhone 5 s hardware exclusive, so as to make people upgrade to the newest phone (as opposed to being a software feature).

there is no way to do a fingerprint scanner in software w/o accompanying hardware designed to scan fingerprints.

also, in today's marketplace nothing "makes" people upgrade. people "choose" to upgrade if they find value in the offerings. luckily for apple, theyre pretty good at delivering value.

Yeah, because this has never been done before Samsung? Where have you been? A crappy Dell I had from almost 10 years ago had this. It's not new tech. Apple doesn't claim to have invented it either. You are aware they bought the company that makes these, aren't you? (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Appl...6-million-James-Bond-iPhone-to-follow_id32725)

mp3 players existed before the ipod, too. the devil's in the details... Dell's scanners sucked. im willing to bet apple's wont.

Even a hardened war veteran would give up a lock code. You wouldn't even have torture them. No one wants to go through un necessary pain. Give them your code, then find a computer and use iCloud to change the code or wipe the phone.

If all this does is unlock the phone I think it will be kind of just a gimmick. Then again I can't think of much more it could do. If they integrate it with NFC payments that would be great.

Either way let's hope the reign of the craptastic iPhone home button is finally over. Every iPhone I ever had that thing was worn out in month or two.

Now if they would offer a couple screen size options we'd really be talking.

If you're a hardened war veteran, you're not going to take any crap from a phone thief!

Capacitive button then right?

A fingerprint sensor doesnt match with a hardware button, which in time will break the sensor if pressed many times.

er, what's your source on sensor fragility? do you design button hardware for a living?

----------

Nice feature to have. But meh on my excitement scale.

what do you want it to have? flying cheeseburgers that come out of the screen?

----------

Best not to loose the finger.

Or worse. It's asking the bad guys to chop the fingers off.

Geez I'm staying away from the iPhone.

get. real.

Right, because you are the head of NSA, so the information in your phone is so important that someone is willing to commit a fatal felony for it. Oh, and you are one of the very rare NSA heads that your fingers are very easy to get stolen by someone else. So right!
