Great for me!

I did a regular update to the release version (not the GM) via WiFi. I am amazed at the performance with my 4. I was truly expecting some slowdowns and stuttering, but I have to say I have not seen that at all.

It's just as quick as iOS 6, and in some cases I'd say even faster.

I guess I just need to reinstall. I am having some consistent lag in animations that others aren't having I guess I'll just restore .

IOS 7 is better than IOS 6

I installed IOS 7 on my iPhone 4 this morning and IOS 7 is running better than IOS 6 ever did. Everything on IOS 7 on my iPhone 4 is so smooth IOS 7 on iPhone 4 rocks :D:apple:

Now that the final is out, could you please share how is the USABILITY? I dont care much about the "fancy stuff" I care about performance and usability at the Basics.

I am still on iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1b and have not moved to iOS 6.x.x. I am wondering if I should go to some version of iOS 6 or iOS 7?

I dont care much for fancy themes, animations etc. I dont use Winterboard and similar stuff.
I never like the COLORS or TRANSPARENCY in Windows XP, Windows 7, or 8. My Windows (now 7 Enterprise) looks like good old Windows 2000. Gray, clean, functional.

At the barebones does it work well? And how is its performance comparatively on iphone 4: iOS 5, 6 and 7?

I am noticing this huge disparity in experiences. Let's get clear on what we went to DETERMINE here:

Let's only talk about iPhone 4 hardware experiences with
+ iOS 6.1.3 (Stay on)
+ iOS 7 Final (Move up)

Let's do comparative of the above two without MIXING the following:
- Experiences with iOS 7 Beta versions (it clouds and mixes too many experiences in the mind not allowing for an accurate comparison).
- Only for iPhone 4 (not experiences with 3GS, 4S or 5/ 5S).

Let's STICK to the above and do a iOS 6.1.3 vs iOS 7 comparative on iPhone 4 ONLY.

My experience is that is bit slower than ios 6 and I have experienced some minor crashes. Battery is also a bit worse.

So - just for the comparison I threw iOS 6.1.3 back on my iPhone 4. And was blown away how smooth and responsive it felt! iOS 6 just feels "right" on the phone. iOS 7 at the moment feels like I'm expecting too much of the thing. OK, it's not quite Windows Vista, but it is more sluggish than I am used to with this product.

So… for the time being I have decided to stay down at 6.1.3. Give me a shout if 7 gets snappier!

I downgraded back to ios6.1.3 on my iPhone 4. I think the slowness today just annoyed me. I'm fast with everything i do with the phone and today it didn't really mesh with what I do with my phone, so back to iOS6.1.3 I went. Personally it works very well on the ipad 4, but not the iPhone 4. I guess the phone upgrade will be inevitable later this year.

Let me make this clear: Apps don´t run laggy or slower, only the springboard! That means the home screens, notification center, control center, unlock screen and so on.

I second that, running an iPhone4 on 6.1.3 and one on GM: starting apps isn't any slower on ios7. Sometimes ios7 wins by a tenth of a second, sometimes ios6. I blame the caching for that.
It's only the interface (aka springboard) that feels slow and laggy.

I found Safari good and bad. Scrolling and zooming and screen rotations are absolutely flawless, better than iOS 6. But clicking on the "Tabs" button was very slow, took almost a second to respond! The tabs button responds instantly in iOS 6. As discussed above, the address omnibar is also very slow.

All of these things seem improvable to me (there is no reason at all that a button cannot respond instantly on an iPhone 4!), so I am optimistic for future versions.

One question, on another thread it was reported that turning "increase contrast" on improved responsiveness. It made no difference to me. How have others found this?

I went from 6.1.3 to 7 straight ahead and I can't seem to find this GM version slow. And I use a lot the iPhone. The only complaint I have (and it's being discussed on other thread) is the battery issues, but I've been using the iPhone a lot last hours to see how it behaves with this version. Apart from that, I really love this iOS and don't find it that "slow". Yes, some animations seem slower, but I guess Apple may improve them with time.

Makes me wonder how good it must look on the iPhone 5S....

I strongly recommend you guys do the following -

Backup via iCloud
DFU restore to iOS7
Restore via iCloud
Immediately after reset all settings, network, and privacy settings (not sure if reset all does those other two???)

At this point you're good to go and set up everything.

I recommend disabling background app updating, unticking everything in Spotlight Search (useless indexing), enable "Increased Contrast" in accessibility (doesn't look much different on iPhone 4)... etc.

I also have personally disabled Notification Centre "Today summary" and "Tomorrow summary", and also disabled Notification Centre and Control Centre on the lockscreen - this seemed to make my iPhone 4 wakeup from standby much quicker.

This is final release.

I do however believe there are far more optimisations that will come... this is probably the best .0 release of iOS so far

Was just about to post this. Sums up iOS:7 on the iPhone 4 very well. Thanks for posting.

iOS:7 is as bit as usable as iOS:6 gone past. But in your case, iOS:5 will be fine . Most of the changes have been graphical.

Tidbits, Control Centre comes in handy for me. Only because it's a quick way to use the LED flash as a torch.

When answering a call, I've found in iOS:6 there was delay between tapping answer and before you could talk, in iOS:7 it's not instant.

Apart from that, I can't think of anything off the top my head that would make iOS:7 more usable compared to iOS:6.

Control Centre does come in handy if you are regularly turning WiFi on/off, Bluetooth and Airplane mode on and such things.

Is there anything on iOS:5 that you would prefer to have?

I too am thinking of upgrading my wife's iphone 4 from ios6 to ios7. Some new features she uses and would benefit from are:

(1) Multitasking gestures - Easier to close running apps by swiping up - works for closing multiple apps too. In addition, you can also close an app you are currently on without first exiting the app like ios6.

(2) Facetime Audio - about 1/6 the bandwidth usage compared to facetime video - great in areas with poorer connections.

(3) Call Block feature - blocks unwanted calls

That's about it - at least what my wife would use. Hmm, is it worth it?

iOS:7 on iPhone 4

iOS 7 right now feels like a cydia theme it's slow at times battery drains the new keyboard design only shows in stock apps other apps u get the iOS 6 keyboard i don't understand why apps crash even the updated to iOS 7 ones idk I'd wait for the last update to iOS 7 before updating but go for it if your board of 6 I guess

I'm still having the same overall experience on mine.

I did, however, make the mistake of playing with the 5S while my wife and I were having her Macbook Air checked out by a genius. Wheeeew boy, it was really hard for a day or so to go back to my iPhone 4.

When people talk about lag or general slowness in the springboard or opening apps, it's probably in comparison to an iPhone 5/5C/5S. However, if you're completely used to the 4, you'll be fine. I move along just fine on my 4 using iOS 7.

Yeah, same here. The App Store is a huge improvement in terms of speed. Safari too, which is the most important for me I think. Music as well. Basically, all built-in apps are noticeably faster. I read somewhere that launching is very slightly slower, but honestly I don't really notice that.

They really did an awesome job optimizing it for the 4.

so should i update over ios 6

or do a fresh install of ios7 as new

????

Do an update it is worth it!

To update you all, I originally did an update but wanted to experiment a little.

I had an intention to try two things.

First was to backup phone with iTunes and then do a restore. After that restore from backup.

Second ( if first makes no difference ) restore device but choose not to restore data and keep "as new"

I've just completed the first step and reinstalled a few key apps...omg! This phone is so snappy and responsive! Not sure what went wrong! To top it off the "other" section in iTunes had exceeded 1.2 gb but now sits at 537 mb. Win win all round so far! I will give it a days use of course but I can (at the moment) highly recommend update, backup, restore and then restore data after. This is like a new phone. No keyboard lag, App Store loading quicker too!

I know I have said this like 100 times, but am I the only one who is having heavy stuttering everywhere? Also interestingly enough, every iPhone 4 on verizon I have seen has this issue , while non-Verizon iPhone 4s seem to be fine?

I really like the pull-up control panel and surfing the internet on Safari seems just as quick as on IOS 6.1.3. But I am not a fan of the new icons at all and there is some stuttering in menus. What makes me want to go back to iOS 6 is the animations which are much too slow on the iPhone 4. I would revert and wait for an update if I could.

i have a test iphone 4. i should have stayed with v 6.1.3. besides sluggish performance, battery life is suffering too.
i think performance could be improved if animations are turned off.
i don't think its' a verizon iphone issue, it seems ios 7 is laggy on iphone 4.

hopefully next version will speed things up for iphone 4.

True, I'm just wondering how some of these guys are having "smooth" experiences . Pretty bizarre

I'm one of those guys. Absolutely no problems with iOS 7 on my iPhone 4 (AT&T). I haven't had any of the issues discussed in this thread. I agree that it does seem bizarre that it works well on some phones and not on others. I've yet to read about or think of anything that could explain the difference.

My iPhone4 is working great with iOS7. I was originally skeptical, but after seeing it on a family member's 4, I decided to update.

Maybe it's working TOO good. I was planning on getting a 5S, but iOS7 has breathed new life into this old beast of a phone.

Anyone having issues with youtube app? Scrolling videos, swiping down with my finger does not work time to time after updating to iOS7. Lots of lag and slow response as well.

I had iOS 7 on my iPhone 4 for a day or two. Didn't encounter any performance issues to speak of. Things ran just as smoothly as they did for me on iOS 6. Even so, there were too many deal breakers for me per iOS 7 as compared to iOS 6, so I rolled back to 6.1.3 and now appreciate my iPhone 4 more than ever.

Are you using the latest version? YouTube updated today in the app store.

Just updated to iOS:7.0.2. Can't say there has been any performance changes. I'll give it a day before I make a conclusion. But I doubt Apple would of done anything.
