My girlfriends iPhone 4 on iOS7 is borderline unusable for me. I don't know how she puts up with it. Unlocking stutters and lags, apps take forever to load and you can forget about taking pictures unless you want to wait an eternity. I've never seen a phone take that long to snap and take a picture. What's worse is she still has a year and a half left on her contract.

I'm considering paying up front for a 4S or 5 and giving it to her for christmas.

That's odd. I don't have stutter unlocking both with and without passcode. If anything, the passcode screen has less lag than it did in iOS 6 - pretty much none. And the camera app, while it does take just as long to load as it did in iOS 6 for me, takes photos much faster - pretty much instant, which is surprising.

I mean, iOS 7 is not "smooth" on an iPhone 4 of course. But for me, it's not any worse than iOS 6. I just did a regular OTA update.

Do you have revA one? The 8 giga?
I noticed the revA 4 have less unlock and swipe lag than the 16/32 giga one.

Noticed that on 3 revA ones. What you guys think?

well I guess I should chime in on this. I've been using ios 7 since the early betas and have tried numerous different ways of updating and restoring all versions, gold master, public release 7.0 (even though it was the same as the GM), 7.0.1, and now 7.0.2

my opinion is this: at first I hated ios 7, when the first leaks of it were shown I thought it was fake and hoped so much that it was, my thoughts were "what on earth are they doing?" but over time I started to love it, it just looked so fresh and clean to me and I couldn't wait to have it which is why I started beta testing it. upon beta testing it I found it to be absolutely awful performance wise on the iPhone 4 but I expected this especially with it being a beta. a lot of those problems were fixed in the gold master but the performance is still awfully bad, what I don't get is how it can be so laggy when it still uses the same UI as previous ios versions, you still have your swiping pages, settings app still all works the same, notification center has some added stuff and now the addition of the control center but all of these things should not slow down the phone as much as it has

now people are going to say to me, try a DFU restore, or restore from the cloud etc. etc., let me tell you something, I have done all of those methods and I have seen the differences and they are nice but it still doesn't explain how the rest of the phone is so bogged down, I say this because I had my phone jail broken on ios 6 and in the notification center I had all of the toggles that were brought to the control center in ios 7, I also had many other things running such as tweaks and pretty much every other feature ios 7 has brought to us, my phone still ran buttery smooth and that is something jail breaking is known to take away from ios

I want to love ios 7, I really do. I'm hoping the in and out of app transitions will become smoother and they will fix the known wifi issues but I don't think they will, I'm really starting to believe now some of those people that say apple make older devices slower to make people upgrade their phones because its so evident to me how much less smooth it is compared to ios 6, I even downgraded the other day to test something out. so I make a call on skype/viber and exit the app and scroll around on the phone and in and out of settings app while on ios 7 and the call stutters and lags, I tried the same thing on ios 6 and it was perfectly fine, both of these apps are updated to ios 7 as well

I'm not trying to bash apple or ios 7 in any way, just my honest findings. I've actually convinced numerous people to buy iPhones in the past just from how I describe to them how smooth the OS is and how quality the phones feel, its like no other out there. I've also tried android phones, mainly running ice cream sandwich and its sad to say but ios 7 is starting to remind me of how laggy and buggy that OS is

I'm still going to use ios 7 for a few more weeks I suppose in hopes the next few updates fix some of the issues but if not I will be downgrading back to ios 6 permanently, sadly. I personally see no issue still using the iPhone 4 on ios 6 as it runs perfect to me and does everything that I need it to

I had iOS 7 on my iPhone 4 for a day or two. Didn't encounter any performance issues to speak of. Things ran just as smoothly as they did for me on iOS 6. Even so, there were too many deal breakers for me per iOS 7 as compared to iOS 6, so I rolled back to 6.1.3 and now appreciate my iPhone 4 more than ever.
Do elaborate on that?

Ok guys, I found a "fix" for a lot of the animation lag I was experiencing, although it isn't that great. Basically, I put only 4 apps(I don't have many right now) on each page, and the animations are near perfect. Just something to try if you guys are as fed up as me. Also to the guy above, I'm sure most people know this is intended for newer devices , just wondering why it runs so poorly for some people.

Ok as promised the result: performance has improved. Typing is better, if not good, and more snappiness all around, a smoother experience.

I did as some suggested:
1. Backup to iCloud (took hours..)
2. DFU restore to wipe the thing clean
3. Restore backup (also took very long)
And personally I also did:
4. Reset to factory settings
5. Disable: background refresh, indexing, auto app updates..

This DFU restore option feels like formatting your old PC HD and install windows freshly: all junk is gone from previous versions and updates. I had always updated my iPhone from the iOS it came with, so I guess it needed proper cleaning up.

My dad's iPhone 4 was nearly unusable after the update. I have used Android phones for 4 years before I got my iPhone 5, so I know what "unusable" means.

I started downloading the IPSW to restore it but meanwhile tried doing a "Erase All Settings".

About a 100 iMessages came through after the reset (yeah Dad is Mr Popular). I think these were getting clogged up before.

Worked like a charm. Phone is damn smooth now. Not iPhone 5 fast but iPhone 5 smooth.
So you would use iOS7 and not roll back to iOS 6?
According to this article:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Guide-Fix-iOS-7-Keyboard-Lag-on-iPhone-4-385447.shtml

Turning off iCloud documents and data fixes the keyboard lag! Sounds promising! Can anyone here verify? (My i4 is back on 6.1.3)
Hmmm.. ??
No complaints here, and the single biggest improvement for me is Bluetooth reliability. With iOS 6 I needed to completely shut down and restart the phone nearly every day, because Bluetooth would stop connecting to my car and headset.

With iOS 7, rock solid Bluetooth connections. Also love the control center for the fast access to wifi/bluetooth/airplane/torch. I'm thinking this iPhone 4 should last long enough for me to get the iPhone 6 next year.
This is what I want to be sure of. That I could use it until iPhone 6 comes out.
My battery life is also quite good. But I don't play any games nor do I play videos...

Non gamer. It is a functional phone and PDA device for me.

This is what people need to STICK to when REVIEWING iOS7 on iPhone 4.

Do not compare to other iPhones. Compare iOS 6 and iOS7 on iPhone 4.

No betas.. just the above. And keep the comparison clean.

Guys, i did the same thing - and it HELPED!
I was really disappointed with this update but now it is much better!
Erase all settings did it for me.

My first impressions

Hi guys,

Yesterday I spent a long time pondering reports in this forum, and then took the step to upgrade. I figured that probably the many users with negative experiences had complicated configurations on their phones. The report that resetting all settings solved some people's problems was probably what decided me to take the plunge.

And, well, I'm glad I did. I did a straight/vanilla upgrade, and then reset all settings. By the time I finished readjusting the settings (taking care to leave off a number of settings involving eye candy and background processes that might tax the system--to, in other words, leave all settings as similar do default values as possible), my phone was as responsive as it had been under iOS 6. I am not claiming things are as fast; there is a benchmark by Ars technica shows they're not (http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/09/new-lease-on-life-or-death-sentence-ios-7-on-the-iphone-4/). But my phone is working great, no lags, and it feels like I bought myself a new phone. Note that I'm not a gamer of a heavy social-networks user. My needs hinge on email, messages, Safari browsing, and map / GPS running apps. Safari is actually faster now, the camera feels snappier, and the new gestures make the overall experience more pleasant in Safari, Mail, and Notes. Battery life is also going strong. A single glitch so far: the cellular signal seems a bit weaker. All this is fairly impressionistic so far, but I felt I owed this forum this report. Cheers.

I did all of the above and nothing worked, and te guy above, iphone 4 isn't near close as smooth as iphone 5, put on some glasses.

Just thought I'd post an update on my experience with iOS:7. I'm almost content enough that I could keep it until the iPhone 6, but I think I'll upgrade to a 5s.

Might reuse it as my work phone in time. I'd like to say upgrading to 7.0.2 helped things, but I don't know. It's definitely usable enough though.

The only real annoying thing is the stuttering with the music when I unlock my iphone. It jumps either a minute back or toward the end of the song. I only have had the music app open at the time and one of the default wallpapers. Everything else I close down as soon as I finished using it.

Might be a bug or something?

As has been said before, comparing iPhone 4 and 5 is like comparing apples and oranges..

And by the way; switching off iCloud Docs seems to alleviate keyboard lag for me.

Hi guys,
[.......] All this is fairly impressionistic so far, but I felt I owed this forum this report. Cheers.

You're welcome!

So you would use iOS7 and not roll back to iOS6?

After weighing all pros and cons of having iOS7 on my phone, at the end of the day I like to be up to date; have the latest version of stuff. Call me silly, I don't care. iOS6 performed better, but iOS7 is new! For some obscure reason I care about that aspect. But I also realize it's not like that for everyone.

So yes, I'll stick with iOS7 and live with a stutter here and there.

Take care,
Marty

IOS7 on Iphone 4 8gb

Anyone has experienced differences upgrading the "new" IP4 8gb in comparaison to the 16/32 version?

My iPhone works as it should with iOS 7 - slower :) And I have some issues with battery life. But mine is two years old and I will buy iPhone 6 in March, 2015.
