The iPhone 5 is boring, nothing could have saved it, no matter when they showed off the software.

Boring? Maybe. But given the sales numbers, it nevertheless needs no saving. It is a hit product by any measure.

I doubt people would be happy if he was just turning iOS into shades of gray.

Probably not just "shades of gray", but something more neutral would be a hell of a lot better than fake leather and ripped paper.

yeah or you could just open the damm app ? the process takes the same amount of time.....

toogles should be in the form of a "widget" on the notification center.

----------

But why? Just because most of apple's hardware is aluminum doesn't mean the software will be all silver and gray. And anyway faux aluminum is just as skeuomorphic as faux leather is. According to Rene Ritchie "Ive’s work is apparently making many people really happy". I doubt people would be happy if he was just turning iOS into shades of gray.

Currently a lot of people are quite happy with the current UI, so what gives ?

I say current itunes UI can give us an example of what to expect along Ivy hardware designs wich sadly look very damm good but not always the best in terms of user experience.

biometric home button

How could you use the phone one-handed with a biometric home button? And how small a bit of the fingertip would fit into the home button sensor? Would you have to attack it at exactly the same angle with exactly the same finger, each and every time, to make it work?

Somehow, I don't think that the Home button would make a great fingerprint reader. Too small, and it would be the death knell of the "one handed operation" mantra.

Why should I have to delve into an app or a submenu or slide down the notification shade if I could have the information I'm looking for directly on my home screen? Frankly, the lack of glanceable information is what galls me the most about iOS. When I unlock my phone I don't want to see a static grid of applications that doesn't convey any useful information - but a home screen providing a quick look into my inbox, my Twitter feed, my calendar etc. by way of widgets would be awesome. And hell, the concept I posted is so elegant that Apple won't even have to use the loaded term "widget". It would offer widget-like functionality to every app whose developer cares to use it - and, likewise, it would be up to the users to decide whether they want to "resize" their icons (and if so, which icons they'd like to resize) or whether they'd like to stick with the static grid. Everybody wins.

It's a hit only because of the extreme zombie fanboyism. The iPhone is so far behind Android it's laughable, including in biometrics where IOS 7 is supposed to emphasize. But, that's not to say IOS 7 can't break new ground and raise the bar again. I'm just skeptical because Apple seems to have lost its vision, edge and innovation now that Jobs is gone. I mean look at the pathetic attempt to add a notification screen to the phone. Now look at the one in Jelly Bean and how versatile it is with access to system widgets and links to your apps. I would have expected this type of notification to have come from Apple and it would have in the old days. Sad, but the company just seems to be adrift, floating without direction just like they did in the late 80's and 90's after Jobs had left.

Do you have sausage fingers or something? :p

Can you imagine how many Apple will sell when they finally release an "exciting" iPhone?

If Apple waits until the holiday season of 2014 to release an exciting phone, then lots of people will be bored of Apple in general. Already Apple's market share is plunging, and by then, they will be the old uncool brand of cellphone for people who are WAY behind and WAY old fashioned.

But don't get me wrong. There are huge numbers of technophobes who do not yet own a smartphone. Apple will sell plenty to them. It will be a popular product. Hell, AARP is wildly popular.

That thing takes way too much space on the homescreen mate, i have around 70 apps and always try to keep the pages at minimum plus the fact that you have to be holding the icon to enter this "mode" its just not usefull when i can just tap setting and i have most of the options ilustraded on the video right there and same with the others.

I hope they add toogles but the notification center is the way to go ! if im using a app i dont want to go back to the homescreen to turn on wifi or any other option, just swipe down and i have it all there :)

Naw. Lots of technophobes buy an iPhone because they are convinced that it is "easy to use".

Apple knows who its customers are. They will always appeal to noobs. Just look at their advertising. It always shows mundane, standard smartphone-type stuff that would only wow those who know little about the capabilities of an average smartphone.

"Panoramic photos? On a phone? I didn't know that they could DO that!"

Fair enough. Although I generally try to keep the number of app pages down too (I have two pages on a 4S with a total of 86 installed apps) and still I'd kill for those resizable icons. Yeah, I might have a few more app pages in springboard, but I could "glance" into my most frequently used apps without having to open them.

Indeed, whe both agree that ios needs toogles and some form of "quick glance" :)

Lets hope whe got more than just new icons.

Here is what I think you don't get! Almost everyone buy phones, at least once in 24 months. "Real Computers" (whatever that means now days) not everyone. I have iMac from 2011 (to use for video editing and photography stuff) and not planing on buying another one for at least another 2 years. Since 201O I have had 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. Apple is making more money from "iOS Toys" then from what you call a real computers. Why would anyone (most people) who only want to get to the internet use computers?

I perfectly understand that Apple gets more money out of iToys than of Macs these days. I get that, of course.

But a Mac is considerably more expensive than any iPhone or iMac. And the operating system is much more complex. Developing a new OS X version requires much more time and work than developing a new version of the simpler iOS. And the Mac business is still very big, despite representing a small part of Apple's revenue. Apple shouldn't neglect it.

That's why I think iOS is priority for Apple, and I know many around here hate that.

Yes, iOS is definitely priority for Apple. But that's no reason for it to neglect OS X. It's not like Apple needs to cut expenses. It already spends, on development of their products, considerably less than other companies in the technology field.

I assume Ritchie was referring to those who've seen the UI changes. I'd rather be hearing rumors at people like the direction they're going than hate it.

Market share plunging from where? Where was/is the high market share that is now plunging? And based on whose data?

I have had an iPhone since the original release. I still like the simplicity.

Sure a new refresh might be nice. I care more about features. One feature I need is the ability to forward a meeting invitation directly from Exchange.

I agree with some earlier posts that passbook does not offer much in the way of functionality. I have my hotel rewards card and I get my flight tickets there and that is about it. It would be nice to see more functionality from passbook.

We certainly always need new enhancements and features to the OS, since technology marches forward.

However, people that are complainers about iOS are the ones that really are spending wayyy too much time being unproductive in the OS and not enough time BEING productive in the apps...which is what the smartphone is there for.

Do what you need to do in the apps you have chosen to install, then shut the smartphone off and get on with your life! A smartphone is meant to enhance your life, not sap your life away within it!

I guess I dont have a problem with the current iOS. There are a few tweaks I would make but otherwise its simple and easy to use what else could I ask for? I would really be fine with just better battery. There is no reason why we shouldnt get about 25% better batter at the least with the new 5s.

Meh I don't take anything seriously from a faboi such as Gruber. He's boring.

In fact he's implying that Apple is seriously mismanaged if Apple has to 'pull' engineers from OS X to iOS to finish something (as if throwing more engineers has ever helped solve a problem before - Apple did once do so in the past, but only in light of their surprise success of iOS... the success and importance of iOS is not an unknown factor at Apple today.. though in the imaginations of Gruber it is still 1997)

Actually it was done to get things done on time. Since this is allegedly the first major ui overhaul to iOS it makes perfect sense they might reallocate resources.

Perhaps you are not familiar with apple but they don't operate with bloated development staffs. So when they get behind the reallocate resources to get things done.

----------

So iOS will deviate away from the OS X UI, or how should one interpret this? I thought Apple was about keeping things uniform. Hearing about any UI redesign from Apple always makes me sceptical, because in the end, it never happens. I bet any UI changes are minimal.

You do know Ivey took over responsibility for the ui right? To expect no major cchanges out of that is to be fairly ignorant.

My main hope for an iOS refresh is that by removing the textures and drop shadows, the OS will run smoothly and efficiency on the likes of the 4S and iPad 3. The way iOS got slower on previous generations when it looked exactly the same was annoying.

I also hope to see a move away from the overly slow transition animations. FakeClockUp was a God send on Jailbroken devices, I'd like to see quicker, more "instant" transitions between screens.
