Just leave it on EDGE for SMS and voice and switch on 3G or LTE manually when you need to do something data-intensive. I get 2-3 days battery life this way.

Thanks, I shall give this a try, but I also play a lot of games and surf the internet on my phone, so that eats the battery like there is no tomorrow. Really, just stop making the phone so damn thin. It's thin enough, I need a bigger battery! :)

Just because something sells is no indication it will continue to do so. Look at Blackberry, they sold by the boat load until suddenly they were considered uncool and boring. Tech changes fast, and Apple is one misfire away from being your grandparents phone.

Blackberry was only considered "uncool" when something else came along... namely iPhone and Android.

And right now... iPhone and Android are still the tits.

Blackberry never sold 47 million phones in 3 months... nor did they have an app economy like Apple's App Store... nor did they have an accessory market like the iPhone has.

I see what you're saying... but Apple is in much better shape than Blackberry or Palm ever was.

What's the worst that can happen... Apple becomes the 2nd largest phone manufacturer in sales? iOS becomes the 2nd largest mobile platform behind Android? That's not really that bad considering how much money they make from their silver-medal status.

I don't think Apple will face a Blackberry/Palm situation.

As for the "cool" factor... if the iPhone is ever deemed uncool... does that make Android cool by default?

Some Android phones have cool features (maybe gimmicks) but the vast majority of Android phones sold around the world are basic average phones.

Someone in India buying a $150 Android phone isn't buying it because it's cool...

No, they can't. A players always hire A+ players, it's tough to hire a ton of B players to do one A player's worth of work.

Plus adding a ton of people to software actually makes it take longer to make since you gotta get them all caught up.

Eh, last I've check Google hired all the A players. How many PhD holders do you think Apple has?

Would it be totally out of line for Tim Cook to pull a "One more thing"? He has never said those words, as they were iconically Steve Jobs. I just imagine that if they wanted to release an iWatch, while at the same time reduce the chance of negativity surrounding tradtional "S" upgrades, this would be the way to do it. After showing a preview of iOS7, then leading into the iPhone 5S (S for security? / biometric scanner), Tim Cook could easily do a "One more thing" and use the iWatch as the a ha moment needed to round out the entire launch on an overly positive note. People would see a software and hardware interation, as well as a new hardware launch. The way they all tie together and the integration of a possible biometric scanner is an exciting prospect. IMO.

who knows, but i hope it's something cool.

watching the Apple keynotes was entertaining for 2 reasons

1) the Apple products themselves
2) Steve Jobs presenting the Apple products in the way that he did

it seems like now, the keynotes are about as exciting as a wet fart considering new categories haven't been achieve and most products are just incremental improvements (although the iPad Mini is Apple's 1st small tablet - a new product but not a new category)

i also wish (might be shooting myself in the foot on this one) that their supply chain get better control of the security situation with regards to leaks. while it's great that i get to see prototype pics, leaked parts, and sometimes whole assemblies that were covertly stolen from the factory and then having some chinese kid waiving it in his hand in front of a digital camera (zoomed in so you can't see his head). their keynotes and product announcements used to be a surprise - for the last 1 1/2 yrs they have just been a plain old disappointment

Visual makeover huh ?

Looks the same to me.... adding features is NOT a visual makeover as Apple has always done this..

A completely redesigned IOS... Now, thats a makeover.

Besides, I don't really believes this, since we all know Apples taking "small improvements" with their Mac OS X updates. why would't they do the same with IOS ?

Happy to wait as long as it takes for this. Hopefully the blue disappears.

And hopefully they'll clean up or finish some of the sorely incomplete functionality...

haha the story of that guy truly cracks me up.

looking at what policies this dude implemented at the Apple retail stores and the direction he was taking things, you would start to wonder what the hell Apple's interview process is like to have allowed such a dude into their company.

this guy wreaks of exactly why HP fell off a cliff and why other companies implemented too much lean six sigma to even innovate anymore.

what Forstal did is what every MBA does these days. they lack even a trace of innovation and instead focus all of their efforts and energy leaning out the company to squeeze profits and thus boost compensation. once everything has been raided, they fly away onto the next company who falls for their powerpoint slides

Because someone new is running the show now? And is maybe sick of iOS being the butt of jokes in the tech/design worlds.

Here's what I see happening:
June WWDC: iOS 7 Previewed; iPad 5 Introduced; iPhone 5S Introduced
June: iPad 5 Ships/Launches
July: iPhone 5S Launches with iOS 7
September Keynote: iPad Mini 2 Introduced; "Cheap" iPhone Introduced; iOS 7.1 Previewed
September: iPad Mini 2 and Cheap iPhone Launch with iOS 7.1
November Keynote: iWatch Introduced
November: iWatch Ships

Mostly right, however:
1) It's unlikely that iOS will launch one month after debut! iOS typically has about 3 months of incubation time between debut and public release. There used to be March debuts with June releases. We haven't seen anything yet, so a typical June/September timetable is more likely, especially if there are significant UI changes.

2) A June debut of iPhone 5S with July launch is also unlikely - unless you mean the very beginning of July. Typically Apple allows about a week and a half between debut and release. Enough time for logistics to fall into place, not so long that sales of existing models suffer. A monthlong wait would be a death knell for iPhone 5 sales.

I was so happy to hear I've was going to take over. Hopefully he'll kill that stupid linen texture. It's time for a big change (home screens are really boring) and that's a great place to start.

His name is "Ive" not "I have"

Looking so much forward to a reskinned, spring-cleaned osx/ios. I imagine Cook and Ive taking stage and stating that "this year, it is all about the software".

I am also pretty sure that a software-focused year is exactly what is needed to drive new excitement into the Apple eco-system.

You mean "it is all about design" ?

be curious what devices will not support iOS7. I had to dump my iPad since it would not support iOS6 and all my other devices were on iOS6, also I was more interested in a smaller and thinner iPad that was easier to hold.

I am guessing anything older than the iPhone 4S will not support 7, and maybe anything older than the iPad 3? I guess we will know soon enough.

I also prefer they take their time and come out with something more stable then release something buggy with constant updates that sometimes make things worse.

One of the features could be magnification -- enlarged icons when you tap & hold an App icon (like the OS X dock).

So what's keeping holding you back? Got to love how people who no longer believe in Apple stick around the user sites proclaiming they are going elsewhere. I guess if we can hear you saying bye, you ain't gone.

Because it not yet released? But too bad...I already jumped to Nexus 4, though I am replying you with my iPad Mini...

Hmm...intersting that this patent application just came out. One of the inventors listed on the patent works on the ID team. h/t patentlyapple

I think the iphone 4 will get IOS7 and will probably be the last update it will get. Most likely the ipad mini and ipad 2 will also get the update since they have same specs and they aren't going to leave all those who bought a mini out to dry after less than a year

You are right. Since they need to do a major short term reallocation every five years they would be better off just having too many engineers all the time.

How do you know Apple has the "right amount" of engineers most of the time?

I don't think he will be missed at apple

I think some of the development teams that worked on heavily skeuomorphic and/or heavily textured apps are kind of in disarray now. I can't imagine Ive wanting to leave faux stitching etc. in place for one second longer than it needs to be. (Not to mention his reputed habit of shipping by schedule instead of shipping by quality, just to show that he can manage projects "on time and on budget.")

But yeah, Forstall probably wasn't the guest of honor at any big farewell parties at Apple.

If Apple is smart they will scrap the iphone 5S and go for an all new redesigned (& thinner) iphone 6 along with the fresh new iOS 7. I know there are some hardcore fanboys who will accept ANYTHING Apple does and that is the main reason why the iphone is going stale! A new chip and slightly better camera doesn't cut it in todays technological world.. wake up people lol
