Unfortunately, some patients at a hospital might die BECAUSE of errors like this. People rely on their phones for mission critical tasks, and anyone who updated could lose the very connectivity that could save lives. So this IS a big deal, and there need to be consequences whether you like it or not.

You have no idea what you're talking about, do you? There is no hospital in the USA where an iPhone would be considered a 'mission critical' piece of equipment.

I have a torrent of the IPSW on my seedbox, ready to share. Am I allowed to post a torrent link on here? It's not technically piracy since its available for free.

Apple stopped signing 8.0.1, so nobody will be able to install it even if you did post the link.

For everyone freaking out and saying someone needs to be fired, please calm down. I'm sure people have worked hard around the clock with iOS 8 and to suggest they should be fired for one mistake like this is ridiculous. We don't even know how widespread the problem is yet. I'm sure everyone here has made a mistake at work in our careers and would have just loved to have been fired and unable to take care of our families over what is likely an honest mistake. Calm down and go outside for a bit. I promise there are bigger issues in life then losing cell connectivity for what is likely to be a small amount of time. Taking care of dying patients every day at the hospital I can promise you this is not a big deal if you have some perspective in your life.

Yes, mistakes happen, people are not perfect, blah blah... but people WILL be fired over this. Software companies hire people to perform QA so that issues like this don't happen. Not just one person... TEAMS. This is a huge black eye for Apple and is damaging to their reputation and ultimately sales numbers.

I can't install the update.. I've tried on LTE, 4G and Wi Fi.. it keeps saying "Unable to verify update, you are no longer connected to the Internet"

Any way around this??

It was pulled by Apple. You don't want it anyway. It killed the cellular radio and Touch ID.

LOL really? Mission critical in my line or work involves vehicles running correctly and weapons/equipment properly vetted, cleaned, and function tested/checked. I'm not going to change a bolt or upgrade an optic in the middle of a mission, nor am I going to change a motor in a vehicle transporting me, b/c it has 5 hp more than the last one, in the middle of a mission.

Anyone doing this, especially in a hospital setting where people's lives are on the line should have their creds yanked ASAP.

What happens when an MD updates his phone because he is home and on call. Then the hospital needs to get a hold of him to perform life saving surgery and they can't because he doesn't have cell service?

You think he should lose his credentials and his job because he updated his phone?

I realize this is extreme, and there are usually multiple ways to get a hold of someone, so this wouldn't happen. But is was very stupid of Apple to release something that causes this much of a problem.

It just should have been tested before they released it. We should be able to count on a company without having to check their work. Yes I waited to see if there were problems before updating, luckily. But someone had to be the guinea pig and lose their connectivity.

This is the most ridiculous thing i've EVER heard.

VolLTE???

I upgraded to 8.0.1 and then backtracked to 8.0. Since then, my VolLTE setting isn't working. I got a message saying it was disabled by my carrier and I can't turn it back on (Under Settings-Cellular-LTE-Voice & Data). I had it enabled in the morning and it was working and now it's not since the upgrade/downgrade. I am with Verizon.

I'm a little late to this, but have they removed the 8.0.1 update perhaps due to the issues? I do not see it on my phone. It is telling me my software if up to date.

Have they? The links are still live.

Yes. Apple removed the update. No doubt they will re-release it at some point.

Haha I agree. At least in the hospital I work at the devices we have set up are usually lagging behind on updates and are only allowed updates upon approval and done via IT team. A "mission critical task" device that gets updated the minute an update is available is doubtful especially since an update takes time to install and you lose connectivity during that time as well haha, sure let's update that device right now. Given how short this update was available, I doubt our IT team would have been ready to update anybody's devices.

Yes, he should lose his job. Don't update your phone when you're on call, especially when it means switching your phone off for some time.

90+% of hospitals still use some form of pager given by the hospital to the physician... Hospitals still use pagers for several reasons, including not having to deal with the scenario you're talking about. You have no idea what you're talking about. Stop.

All docs at our hospital are required to have back up ways of contacting them. If a hospital does not have this then it is the hospital's fault. To change subjects how do you all think apples stock will open tomorrow?

What do you think happens to that same MD when he is on call, driving, and passing through a tunnel or cell dead zone? When a cell tower has a problem (not unusual)? When he's on another life-saving call where even switching to call waiting would kill someone (as long as we're being ridiculous)?

I'll tell you what happens:

First, MD's largely still use pagers for just this reason, so he still gets the page.

Second, he calls in as usual because a doctor on call is not going to even be on iOS8, let alone a minutes-old update. For just this reason.

Third, if somehow your hypothetical doctor wasn't supposed to be on call, accidentally picked up his wife's phone, which had been upgraded minutes earlier, was relying on cell phones rather than pages, *and* missed an emergency call... the on call service would route to the next MD in rotation.

Fourth, even willful unavailability isn't grounds to lose a license. Repeated cases might cause disciplinary action from the hospital.

I'm genuinely curious why you felt the need to make up such a scenario despite having no idea how the medical on-call system works. Did you think people wouldn't notice? Are you a liar in general, and just enjoy making stuff up and hoping to fool people? Do you actually think you're knowledgeable in this area? Sigh. I know, it's the internet. But I like to think there are real people out there.

Exactly. Its the same at the company I work for. We are only allowed to update iOS once IT have tested it. It'll be even more locked down in a medical environment.
