What happens when an MD updates his phone because he is home and on call. Then the hospital needs to get a hold of him to perform life saving surgery and they can't because he doesn't have cell service?

You think he should lose his credentials and his job because he updated his phone?

I realize this is extreme, and there are usually multiple ways to get a hold of someone, so this probably wouldn't happen. But is was very stupid of Apple to release something that causes this much of a problem.

It just should have been tested before they released it. We should be able to count on a company without having to check their work. Yes I waited to see if there were problems before updating, luckily. But someone had to be the guinea pig and lose their connectivity.

LOL. You should write stories for a living. You have good imagination :)

Yes, mistakes happen, people are not perfect, blah blah... but people WILL be fired over this. Software companies hire people to perform QA so that issues like this don't happen. Not just one person... TEAMS. This is a huge black eye for Apple and is damaging to their reputation and ultimately sales numbers.

Ok, yeah I never meant to say that this was life or death. As the quote above points out this is about reputation and customers who are not happy. Its a big deal to the industry. So no, nobody will die, its not that big of a deal. Buts its a huge mistake. Just like if you worked as a chef, and your prepared a meal to a group of business men, and it was the nastiest meal they have had. Your not going to have a job long. So just because its not life or death doesn't mean we just let any mistake fly. Imagine how the world would be if people didn't care about mistakes unless if costs lives. lol "don't worry sir, I know all of the new cars we made stopped working in the last year, and you paid 100K for it. But nobody died, so you will have to forgive us."

Sorry I prob took that way too far. lol

Forstall be like ...

Apple was better with Forstall.

If Forstall took a hit for maps... there'd better be some heads rolling pretty soon for the iOS debacles.

No, it won't damage their sales numbers. People who don't like Apple will chat it up, people like me and the other hundreds of people I know, move on.

In the meantime 8.0.1 seems to have fixed the wifi sluggish problem.

Doctors on call use pagers

90+% of hospitals still use some form of pager given by the hospital to the physician... Hospitals still use pagers for several reasons, including not having to deal with the scenario you're talking about. You have no idea what you're talking about. Stop.

All docs at our hospital are required to have back up ways of contacting them. If a hospital does not have this then it is the hospital's fault. To change subjects how do you all think apples stock will open tomorrow?

What do you think happens to that same MD when he is on call, driving, and passing through a tunnel or cell dead zone? When a cell tower has a problem (not unusual)? When he's on another life-saving call where even switching to call waiting would kill someone (as long as we're being ridiculous)?

I'll tell you what happens:

First, MD's largely still use pagers for just this reason, so he still gets the page.

Second, he calls in as usual because a doctor on call is not going to even be on iOS8, let alone a minutes-old update. For just this reason.

Third, if somehow your hypothetical doctor wasn't supposed to be on call, accidentally picked up his wife's phone, which had been upgraded minutes earlier, was relying on cell phones rather than pages, *and* missed an emergency call... the on call service would route to the next MD in rotation.

Fourth, even willful unavailability isn't grounds to lose a license. Repeated cases might cause disciplinary action from the hospital.

I'm genuinely curious why you felt the need to make up such a scenario despite having no idea how the medical on-call system works. Did you think people wouldn't notice? Are you a liar in general, and just enjoy making stuff up and hoping to fool people? Do you actually think you're knowledgeable in this area? Sigh. I know, it's the internet. But I like to think there are real people out there.

This is why I said this was and extreme example and would not happen. I know what hospitals usually do. I work in one. I actually don't agree that people will DIE because of this, but we also don't need to be jerks to someone who says something extreme like that when they are upset. We have all done that before in one way or another.

My point is that is was stupid of Apple to release something with this big of a problem. Just not good business.

It didn't affect me, so I guess it doesn't matter. The point is that as much as we might not want to rely on our phones some people have to. I am glad I am not one of those people and don't have to look at my phone constantly.

There is no reason to attack others or tell them they are dumb for being angry about the inconvenience of something like this. Should it be life altering, no, but saying that someone shouldn't be affected by it because it is just their phone is unrealistic in our current society.

Sorry for making you so upset and saying the dumbest thing you have ever heard. Calm down people.

Wish this guy would pay as much attention to iOS as he does to his awesome hair...

Agreed. 8.0.1 seems to have fixed the slow wifi on my 5S!

Fortunately the 5S does not suffer the same fate as the 6 and 6 plus with the 8.0.1 update. No cellular issues here whatsoever.

Edit: I spoke too soon. The wifi lag seems to be IMPROVED with 8.0.1 but not totally fixed.

Its pretty unacceptable that Apple either thinks its too great for bugs like this to exist so it doesn't properly test updates, or it just can't be bothered.

They're busy counting the money, laughing.

Or something else happened. Not to say that it's not their fault, or at least partially their fault, but we don't really know what actually happened just yet.

Well I don't think apple thinks they are too good for bugs, as much of their software updates come with a list of bug fixes.

I just can't figure out what they did, obviously devs beta tested and didn't have an issue. If they changed it, they should have released that one to the devs to test. In theory, the final beta should be the same as the final.

Are you serious... Partially?

You can't be serious, you just... can't.

obviously devs beta tested and didn't have an issue

Nobody had the option of beta testing it on an iPhone 6 except Apple.
They are the only computer company in the world that only has to support a handful of their own devices and they can't even get that right? Un freaking believable.

Why not? If there was something on the carrier side or something like that that contributed it, would it not mean that some part of the fault would be spread beyond Apple meaning that 100% wouldn't be on Apple? Fairly basic logic. And, just because it might be even partially their fault, doesn't make it any less of a fault, so I'm not sure what the issue is with that.

Pretty sure carriers have been able to test it with iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and if for some strange reason they haven't, well there's a problem there too.

Why not? If there was something on the carrier side

On the carrier side? With completely different carriers all over the world? Yeah sure.

You're absolutely right it's not Apple's fault, it's everybody else's. /s

Well thats stupid, very stupid. I guess I assumed devs who had the 6 had gotten a beta. Geez apple, get your head screwed on right.

I hope all of your that updated to 8.0.1 downgraded to 8.0

If not, here's an iDownloadblog link to the 8.0 IPSW

You still have to select if you have a 6 or a 6 Plus, but it worked for me. Took like 15 minutes though.

Well, it sure isn't my fault that you misunderstood what I said and trying to imply something that I said something else entirely.

How is it that no one else had the opportunity to test things with a new phone. Is there some sourced information to say that given that Apple is known to have carrier partners do a lot of testing as well (both for software and hardware).

i wonder when they will release the REAL iOS 8.0.1 update that works. delayed to next week so they can test and make sure we don't have this problem again?

Everything Apple is releasing/announcing these days is either not working or delayed. So we have to get used to that I guess.

It's Tim Cook's Apple.

Hopefully when it's actually ready--as in properly and fully tested with the issues that were present completely addressed--and not before that.
