Exactly. The best iOS/iPhone experience was the 4S with iOS 5.1. It seemed to go downhill shortly after that.

This.

And it's probably not a coincidence that iOS 5 and iPhone 4S were both created while Steve was still around.

Apple have just gotten lazier and lazier since Steve died. Not surprising, just sad.

That's the roughly figure I'm seeing

Just checked my Google Analytics account on my most popular app over the last 3 days.
Just over 45% are now running iOS 8.
8.0.2 - 36.86%
8.0.0 - 8.73%

Plus one poor sod who's running on 8.0.1

Personally waiting on 8.1 and will still wait for feedback after it's released before updating (clean install) on my iPad mini retina.

So much snark in this thread.

Fact of the matter is, some people are waiting for the bugs they've been reading about to get fixed, and lots of people either don't care, aren't going to clear off 5 gigs of space on their device, or aren't going to plug their device into iTunes.

I don't think 8 will ever approach the adoption rate of 7, but it will get close.

I have no doubt others are having probs w iOS 8, but overall I think these initial 8.0.x releases (ip6, iPad Air) are working as well as 7.0.x did last year on my ip5 and iPad2. Also 8.1 beta1 is working very well for me, with significantly improved battery life.

Now Yosemite, ugh, I have had loads of probs even with GM. And the new design has not grown on me.

iOS 8 is the worse iOS to be released, I made the mistake of downloading right away, If I had the chance again I would have stayed on iOS 7.

There is still lag on iOS 8, just changing apps, scrolling, tabs, even when you plug your phone in with the Apple wall charger there is a 2-3 second delay before you see the battery icon to show it's charging, I never had any delay with iOS 7, the moment I plugged it into the charger it pinged that battery sound and was charging now there is a 2-3 second delay. There is lag in places there shouldn't be. I feel like Apple made us testers....I can't wait for 8.1 to fix these issues. Then there is the synch problems with iTunes, just too many issues.

I long for iOS 6 not just for the colors or look but for how buttery smooth it was, it was perfection in my opinion.

Not surprising. And I bet #s would be even less if Apple didn't pull the previous version.

For those commenting on those that don't update their OSes because of ignorance or space - wouldn't this have been an issue with 7.0 and above #s as well?

No, everyone wanted to check out the new design and it didn't require such a large amount of space.

Yeah... its not because of bugs.. It is because people do not know anything about their phones, and the vast majority just let that red 1 sit on their setting app, and the people that actually try to update? They don't have 2 free gigs of space available, and they don't know how to update from their computers.

Am I a pessimist? Yes.... because I work at a technology help desk. And no one.... knows anything.

If having (1628) emails doesn't bother them, nothing will.

Quality control lacking in Cupertino

Buggiest iOS I've ever experienced

It's not just iOS, I'm seeing bugs all over the place.
I'm an App publisher and I've been unable to access my in-app purchases screen for my top selling App for 6 weeks now.
I've had the case open for 6 weeks, it was escalated 2 weeks ago.

Also app review times have double in the last month.
Use to be 7 days for a review regular as clock work, now it's almost 2 weeks.

The problem with Apple is that their "laser focus" take's their eye off other things.

Was looking forward to Yosemite but now I'm not so sure...

No hurry

I updated my iPad Air the first weekend. It took seven hours to update and I've not really seen much that's better, or frankly even much different. Really, my apps run, and there's a "Tips" app that doesn't have much in it, but that's about it. Then after all the bugs, screw ups, issues and the lack of a compelling reason to go ahead I'm not going to update my iPhone 5 for a long while. It's working and I don't want to mess with that. And from what I've heard from people that have tried it my iPad2 is never moving up.

So in this house, Apple iOS8 is running about 33% penetration.

No, everyone wanted to check out the new design and it didn't require such a large amount of space.

So that trumps people not knowing what the (1) indicator is and/or again - having enough space to download it?

I think if one is going to blame ignorance of the user or space requirements - they should consider it for both 7.0 and 8.0

Well, I guess that puts me in the "other" 47%. Still on a 4s. Made the mistake going from iOS6 to 7. Won't make that mistake again. iOS8 on my dinosaur would be suicide. Still wish I could go back to 6

iOS 8 will be the last iOS update on iPhone 5 and iPad 3. My iPhone 5 held up well with iOS 7, but smoothness is gradually going away with each update. You can definitely tell that iOS is starting to get the better of the A6 in my iPhone 5.

Based on past experience, you can actually get more useful life out of a device by not upgrading. I bet iOS 6 would be blazing fast on my iPhone 5 if I hadn't upgraded it.

<--- still on 7

Which has really borked things up with iCloud which demands an update to 8.

What kind of ****ing brain damaged scumbag forces that kind of decision?

Apple have just gotten lazier and lazier since Steve died. Not surprising, just sad.

And you would know because you work there or know people who do? Or are you just equating bugs to employees being lazy? It couldn't be that Steve's management style of running Apple like a start up with small teams is now coming back to bite them? When Steve was running the show Apple was doing about $45B in revenues. This year will probably be close to $180B. Fact is Apple has resource issues. I've listened to many a podcast and read many blog postings from people in the know (or former Apple employees) who admit that. I mean if you exclude retail, Apple has fewer employees than Google. In the last two years iOS has probably gone through more change than in the previous 6 (excluding the App Store). IMO Apple needs to put a freeze on new features (outside of anything ready to go for the new iPads) and just focus on fixing bugs and polishing what they have.

Yeah. It's a very buggy iOS. The buggiest? I'm not sure but definitely up there in terms of the buggiest iOS I've used (I've had every iPhone since 3G). Maybe they are trying too many things at once. I don't know if that is it but there shouldn't be any excuse to release such a bug ridden iOS. If people are saying "my iPhone is fine" don't know what they are talking about. They don't know how to look for bugs or stuff like apps getting stuck not rotating in landscape don't bug them like it does to me. Can't wait for 8.1.

I have issues with Safari on my iPad Air but other than that and odd app crashes (which happend randomly pre-iOS 8 as well) I'm not running into lag or other issues. But my mom has an iPad mini and iPhone 5 and I told her not to update to 8 yet. If 8.1 is good I'll have her update then.

Well, they ****ed anyone who did not have their latest device with iOS7, it's understandable that owners of idevices pre-5s won't update.

I have constant problems with iOS 8, mostly crashing apps and apps not rotating in landscape; both on iPad and iPhone 6.

Very frustrating.

Phew, I thought I was the only one that was happening to. Yep, iOS8 has some definite issues to work out.

A 16GB device with 2GB free can't install it over-the-air. It would require connecting to iTunes or deleting items of the iPhone

Working on a mechanism for seamless upgrades for full devices should be a priority for Apple.

The upgrade process could delete some apps (preserving their documents and data) to create enough space, and silently reinstall them after the upgrade.

Bugs aside. Most of the people I know, family included, just don't care. A few on IOS 6, most IOS 7.1.1 or earlier. What ever came on their iphone? Hell, some I know are still running Snow Leopard on their Macs, when they can still update to Mavericks for free. Soon to be Yosemite for free. They just can't be bothered. Don't get it.
