Iphone 5 (and up) is fine in terms of smoothness and performance. It's the iPads. There are some pretty big issues with performance and smoothness on iPad Air and mini retina.

You != everyone. My 16g mini retina runs just fine.
Also, screen rotation stutters when keyboard is on screen on iPad air. The same happens when rotating screen in the App Store app. Opening cc when keyboard is on screen is embarrassingly laggy.

umm... not on my retina mini which is basically the same as an Air.

I'm Sorry, but the thing is, you just don't notice it. The stutters are there because the core OS (animations and stuff like that) is the same in every iPad Air, and you cannot change it or screw it up (neither can apps, because they can't change the core OS).
Every iPad Air has lower frame rate when rotating screen in the App Store app (featured and top charts tabs), activating Siri etc.

REALLY? You're so arrogant that you assume you're right and what you see is The Truth? Get over yourself.

PS: Something that's not noticeable can't be called laggy. Words mean things.

lol, nothing arrogant in what I said :p .It is a fact.
If you think I'm wrong, then you simply don't understand iOS and how it works.

If my iPad Air has some frame drop issues even after a DFU restore (with no apps installed, although that doesn't mean anything in this case), it means that every iPad Air has those issues. Period.

The hardware is exactly the same for every iPad Air, so is the software. My iOS 8 GM (for my Air) is exactly the same as yours (for your Air). Considering apps in iOS cannot change the core OS (such as animations), it means that whatever app you have installed has no effect on animation smoothness of your device. Sure, some apps might cause a battery drain due to constantly using location services etc. but that is completely different. This is not Windows, where every PC (with the exact same internals and same OS) will behave differently due to: User being able to change the core OS, Different apps RUNNING in the background, viruses etc. etc.

It's definitely usable, don't get me wrong. There are some glitches and bugs but that doesn't make iOS 8 GM unusable. So your title is irrelevant.

+1 on iPad Air feeling like cheap Android tablet. We have purchased $600+ Tablet few months ago and such substandard experience is just not acceptable. Especially from a premium brand like Apple.
:mad::mad::mad:

Guys, you know Apple is going to release a big fix quickly?

x.0 of any software is going to have issues, having said that I think iOS 8 sounds like it should have stayed longer in Beta.

There are so many glitches that I have to downgrade back to 7.1.2 on my 5S.
Anyone else having this issue?

I went from 7.1.2 on the following devices
iPhone 5S
iPad Air
iPad Mini
iPad Mini Retina
iPhone 5
iPhone 5C

None of they have had any iOS 8 Beta installed and all were upgraded via iTunes to iOS 8 GM. On the iPhone 5S I had to reset the settings under settings > General > Reset as it seemed a bit laggy, but none of the other devices required this.

Been on it since the 9th and no issues (other than the reset stated above).

Explain to me why my two 3GSs behaved differently?

I have 2 32 GB iPhone 3Gses, and they had different iOS 6 lag. Both with erase and install, set up as new phones within the same day. One of them had the touch screen unresponsive for about 30 seconds after its been turned on and the other didn't. Same device, same software.

There may be minor variations between the code in the 4G model vs the Wifi Model, the condition of the battery could contribute... any number of minute differences. Maybe installing certain apps/ unique combinations of settings mean there is no lag...

The networking stack in iOS8 GM is a mess. The device frequently won't find wifi spots until you go back and forth into the wifi screen a half dozen times (I was abroad this weekend so I tested in literally dozens of places with the same behaviour), connectivity occasionally drops out entirely, and the phone loves spamming you with popups about the lack of network connectivity constantly in bad signal areas in a way iOS 7 never did - the phone says at the top of the screen I have no signal, I do not need two popups every time I try and flip between mail and Safari.

iPad Air has those stutter issues when transparency is ON, so yes, some settings such as reduce transparency can reduce it, but that's not the point. (using reduce transparency turns nice looking blurring effects and OS into something UGLY). :p
Your 3GS example is not the same. That was a BUG in the software (or perhaps a hardware issue). This ain't a bug, this is lack of optimization. and it's the same with every iPad Air. Some people don't notice those frame drops (which is ok), but it annoys me when I see it. (It's not terrible and iOS 8 isn't unusable because of it, but it's there)

Its been ok for me. I did have to do a network settings reset on my iPad mini since it was dropping wireless often.

I loaded it and had issues on my 5S as well. I went ahead and reloaded it as a clean install and everything has been smooth since.

But why didn't that bug replicate on both 3GS's as it is the same thing.... Both fully restored with the same software.

I don't think you can argue with people to say that its every iPad Air...

I think I can (several users here noticed the same thing. Some noticed it for the first time after I told them about it), and the person who thinks otherwise can post a short video on Youtube and prove me wrong.

If he/she proves me wrong, I'll apologize immediately :)

Have been using on a 4S without any issues, at least in the way I use the phone. A few apps that weren't updated to support iOS 8 yet have issues, but that's to be expected.

Dumb question; what does GM stand for?

"A lot of iOS 7 and 8 slowdowns on the iPhones are caused from the frosted glass FX, the iPad still runs like KAKA with increase contrast "on" Best example is rotating landscape and portrait modes in iMessage and especially the AppStore."

"Seriously though I have a little lag on Safari on my Ipad Mini but it still runs smoother than Android and hopefully they will get things sorted quickly. I do agree though, I would have expected better from Apple before IOS7. They set the bar high and will be held to that high standard."

Here's just a couple of posts from users here, and a video. There's much more of it, if you just search a bit.

I'm not saying iOS 8 is crap and unusable. It just isn't on par smoothness wise with iOS 6 and earlier (which were near flawless as far as smoothness is concerned).

Doesn't seem much different than 7.0 days. Nothing new or surprising at this point. Certainly far from unusable or anything even close to that, as the title of the thread seems to imply.
