The iPad needs multi-user support much more desperately than this.

Why does it? It seems very obvious to me that Apple intends for customers to have one device per person, with one account per person.

Any other option makes no sense to Apple from a financial perspective.

Ugh. Do we really need this? It's the kind of feature where the idea seems better than the reality. The vast majority of users would never bother with it.

I don't think they will ever add full multi-user support - at least in the near future. They want everyone to have their own! The best we can hope for is a better "kids" mode where you can restrict what apps they can see.

And now I will have a good excuse to buy an iPad Air. I've had an iPad 2 for a long time, and I assume it won't support this feature.

Ya, I can't see anything older than the A7 iPads getting this. And even they might struggle due to RAM. We'll have to see how Apple implements it (if true).

If its one thing I trust Apple to do better than Microsoft or Samsung, its optimize their software for the best possible performance on their hardware.

that aint happening since most of iDevices are for personal use.

You have it the wrong way round. iDevices are used in this manner because there is no multi-user login.

Please Apple - even a main and a guest account would do, so I can at least let my mates use my iPad without the constant threat that they're going to change the language, set an alarm for 4am or change my name to C***yMcP*ssFlaps when I'm not looking.

So long as support is adopted across more than just the core apps, sure why not?

Never really saw the need or draw in Samsung tablets and Windows tablets being able to do this. Hell, I hate doing it on a desktop.

Give me more RAM, a better battery and the OS X like fullscreen swiping between running apps and I'd take that over this "multitasking".

But hey, I've been wanting some iPad specific features for a little while (over and above what iPad optimized apps provide). Looking forward to WWDC.

You know that it is already possible to swipe through apps on de iPad?

Old news :p

Have this already

Surface's implementation of split-screen sucks. I do think split-screen has value, especially when it comes to taking down notes or when you want to look at a website while working in another app. I see this as Apple's implementation of touch-based cut and paste. They took longer to implement it because they wanted to get it right. It's better to delay a feature than to release something that doesn't work well.

That someone is me!

Seriously though, this would require more RAM as two apps would have to be kept active. If Safari for iPad already struggles to keep a couple tabs opened without refreshing when you switch between them, I can't imagine what it would be like if you have, say, a game running next to it and using lots of RAM as well.

At least the way it is currently, an app in background can easily free some memory by releasing all the visual stuff that can be reconstructed when the app comes in foreground again (that's what UIViews typically do when they receive a low memory warning). With this split-screen feature, the two active apps would have to "share" memory all the time even down to the visual elements.

Sheeeee.... don't wake the beast.

iOS8 will most likely cripple current iPad HW or reduce the speed significantly during multitasking.
Probably another means to persuade the consumer to an iPad HW upgrade.

I hope those rumors are true. I dont want it on a phone, would just clutter the UI experience, but would love it for the ipad. Though I hope its more intuitive to pair programs than the video attached. WIll be nice to see. I assume its quite a lot of work that needs to go into apps before it works flawlessly - since the whole foundations has not been based on it earlier.

THough, Im mostly curious about OSX 10.10 :) FInally the OSX gets some extra love.

I will be disappointed if no new hardware comes too though, the iMac can easily update with the latest processor and GPU from nvidia, no point waiting.

Agreed - now that they've brought iPads down to the $299 level, I doubt they see any reason to add multi-user support now. If they thought you should just buy a second iPad before (when the $499 was the only option), they sure as heck think that now.

And I don't blame them. Either you let your kid use your iPad, which you supervise (at least I would), or you buy them their own (iPad or other tablet).

I do. Figure Apple would need to beef up the specs a bit though to make it work really well (ala OS X).

Great, but you can already do this with a Galaxy Tab or MS Surface. Now lets work kn NFC, Wireless charging and catching up with voice.

I've never used a Surface. What's wrong with the implementation?

Well, with that logic, remove multi user accounts from their Mac offerings too. That way, I can buy 4 $2,000+ Macs for each one of my family members as well as $600+ iPads! I mean gee, my 2 year old should be able to use my account to move my icons around and start downloading email and I should be able to use his Sesame Street learning apps as well! Genius Apple, genius!

edit: I'll say this - if Apple doesn't implement multi-user accounts for the 2 iPads I already have, then I'm selling them both. Only the iPhone is meant to be used by one user and therefore we're better off using them for our mobile needs (especially since bigger screens coming), the iPad is clearly a multi-user device. If I need more power my mobile needs, my family will use our Macbook Airs, for which we have 2 (plus the iMac). Not having multi-user capabilities is completely unacceptable.

iPad is so powerful

I'm looking forward to more Desktop-esque features on the iPad, otherwise it's just going to sit in my desk drawer doing nothing.

I have heard this sentiment expressed several times not just about iPad but, tablets in general. While I find android to be anti-intuitive which is a hindrance to productivity, iOS is very powerful and intuitive. What exactly do you want to do with your iPad that you can't do right now? I am just curious cause I use my iPad for almost everything and my laptop sits on my desk simply as a hub for my files that I mostly access with the iPad.

For school and office environments, yes it's needed.

With mates like them, who needs enemies....haha but seriously - why would you let them touch your iPad?

Buy a cheap refurb off the Apple store if you like handing out your iPad so much.

This and widgets please - then I can finally consider giving up having to straddle two ecosystems.

Good luck with that. I think it would be too tough a pill for Apple to swallow from a visual experience and UI perspective. I could MAYBE see them doing it somehow integrated within Apple apps only. Like opening Notes or Pages while reading an iBook, or having Safari open while you are editing a spreadsheet or viewing the Calendar etc. I would welcome something like that.

Yes, because multitasking hasn't been done right yet on any platform...
