Ugh. Do we really need this? It's the kind of feature where the idea seems better than the reality. The vast majority of users would never bother with it.

I was just thinking this morning that I wish my iPad would do this.

I was half watching a favorite old TV rerun, and yet ALSO wanting to check my mail or read this forum at the same time.

The iPad needs multi-user support much more desperately.

Agreed. It does need that.

How silly of me, yeah, just buy another one.... Or I may aswell buy another 20 iPads for all my friends and family while I'm at it.

Err, no.

I don't want to spend another £209 TYVM. One device is enough, it would just be loads better with multi-user login which can easily be implemented with a free software update.

But it won't be - or at least I'd be shocked if it were.

Just providing an option. Don't know how we get from 1 $249 iPad to 20....

that aint happening since most of iDevices are for personal use.

iPads are where this is sorely needed.

Yes, phones tend to be personal devices, but iPads tend to be shared across multiple users, especially in families.

Add Touch ID for easy user account switching, and people will literally line up around the block to buy them.

 Please. 2 apps open simultaneously does not require 4GB RAM....

I'm thinking we'll see some more Apple "magic" in how this feature is implemented. Will likely be highly optimized and regulated with respect to how its put into 3rd party apps.

I'd say it needs, at the very least, 2. And that's if they work on Safari to be a little less RAM-hungry.

Well what about those who have kids? They just expected to buy 4 more iPads?

TBH if I was in that situation I'd forget iPads and opt for a tablet that does support multiple users.

And why is everyone so against this idea? I just don't get it! It would be a great feature!

iMovie on one side crunching a video file. Safari on the other with a tab or two.

You better believe it can easily.

I'm the first to wish for more ram believe me, but it's pretty crazy how well the split screen, window resizing tweak 'os experience' works on current hardware.

I would imagine apple won't allow more than 2 apps at once, but I really think they could.

There are likely definite ways to make it chug though, like the above posters suggestion of processing in iMovie while multitasking. I have not tested video processing at all

This sounds a good improvement, but I'm much more excited about the suggestion that Apple recognises that inter-app communication is a disaster in iOS and needs rethinking entirely.

It's not a very convincing article, did you read it? It mentions 'sources with knowledge of the enhancement' and finishes off saying it may be delayed to iOS8.1 or dropped entirely (the click bait euphemism for 'never existed').

A feature as big as split screen delayed to a point release? That doesn't sound very likely at all, if they're doing it, it's done already and is in iOS8 right now being tested ready for alpha release in 3 weeks time.

I don't believe this rumour has anything bar some wishful thinking behind it.

(1) I'm not against it. Just don't think it'll happen. If it did, great. I'd still have my own and my wife would have her own. I use my iPad far too much.

(2) Sure, if you have 4 kids that would be tough. But how old are we talking? How about an iPad for each when they reach a certain age. @ $250 per iPad, you'd spend $1000 (plus tax) and assuming your kids are 2 years apart you could spread that $1000 over 8 years. Would it be impossible to save $125 per year?

Maybe its not that important. Maybe it is. Obviously a FREE OS update would work better in that situation. Just pointing out - with the advent of the cheaper iPads and the refurbished options, buying additional iPads isn't SO ridiculous. IF you really want whomever have access to one without messing up yours.

Anyhow, not meaning to argue about this. If it happens, great. Personally, I think it would make the most sense when they get everything over to TouchID. Then it just logs in based on whomever wakes the device. Would be pretty cool.

Exactly. For the times where you're doing something more passive that doesn't require your full attention, and you want to briefly catch up on email or check your todo list or look at your calendar for the day. I watch a lot of technically-based videos (shocker, I know!) that I need to listen to more than watch. Split screen would be perfect for those occasions.

Multiuser

Agreed multi-user support should be higher priority, especially for those of us with household iPad. Combined with touch ID, will be really nice.

I would love this. It is the only draw to the Samsung tablets that I see in the ads with the iPads. I went and used a Samsung tablet and while I liked it, I was unsure whether or not I would regret getting one because everything else i have is iOS. Syncing my motorola phone was never awesome for me and I regretted skipping an iPhone version for that.

I hope this comes but I am not sure how the memory issue will hold up. With the constant refresh of pages in Safari, can Apple's current iPads handle split screen true multitasking?

Memory upgrade is a must. When samsung introduced the split feature withe note 2, they upped the RAM as well.

WAIT WHAT?! Have I just died and woken up in paradise?!

This would be a huge departure from Apple's current stance on the iPad and a welcome one. A split screen would be amazing if compatibility could quickly come to all (or at least most) apps.

Hope this is true! It would make my other wishes for iPad productivity (file management and an active stylus) not such a pipe dream :D

9to5Mac is usually pretty accurate with these kind of rumors. Of course there is a CYA at the end just in case it doesn't happen.

It's funny that so many of us have to wait so long to be able to do these kinds of these with our devices. Yeah, way to go, Windows tablets -- you can already do this. And the iPad should already do this. But it doesn't make me or millions of others want your tablet. Instead, we wait.

That's years of effective marketing for ya :p
