This will be awesome for Starbucks! I always hate my phone auto-locking when i am in the drive-through and when I pull my phone out of the cup holder for the girl to scan my barcode. There is a 6 or so step process to get back to that barcode after unlocking.

Ideal yet secure use.
--------------------------
Step 1) Tap StarBucks icon in the lower left corner

Step 2) Be prompted to authenticate with TouchID

result) My Starbucks gift card barcode is displayed

Yes, I drink way too much expensive coffee.

Yes, I am too lazy to get out of my truck and walk inside.

You can already do this in the Starbucks app by setting favorite stores and passbook :) it shows a push notification when you get close.

COOL!

I have to admit, I like location aware services.
Too bad i'm a hermit!

I'm with you. Though I am in the process of moving, and to allow the kids to finish school (moving out of state), we stayed in an extended stay hotel. Drive up the street and bling, bling, bling, bling...

All sorts of "You are near" apps. Fun times.

Is there a way to turn this off without killing location services for the app? I want my apps to be able to access my location only when I say so, not continually in the background. And the last thing on earth I want is for apps to be able to spontaneously advertise their products on my launch screen. Yeech.

(Again, you don't have to agree with me, if you like advertunities. Just give us the option to disable them without crippling the app or the phone with such crude measures as turning off location services altogether.)

I doubt this is using location services, it's probably just discovered using Wi-Fi like AirPlay, which means it'd have little to no effect on battery life.

Federighi mentioned privacy protection a couple of times. It would surprise me if something like this slipped through. On-demand location access is one thing, continuous location checking another. Not to mention that it could be a waste of battery life. I’d wager that this technology is based on something else than GPS, perhaps iBeacons or WiFi.

It already does this with frequent locations

I wasn't aware an app icon was advertising. It's not like it's taking up your whole lock screen.

Sure it's advertising; you walk by Starbucks and you see the little icon pop up, you might not have been thinking of getting a coffee but your phone just planted the idea in your head. Now who's in charge?

As an aside, did anyone else notice the iPhone they were using in their graphics was the new one?

I'm pretty sure it is location services. This doesn't seem to be that different from Passbook, where passbook items show up based on your location. Every time I pass a Starbucks, for example, my Starbucks card pops up, and this is on iOS7.

Well, there wouldn't be a change. For me, it would still be me. For you, it sounds like Starbucks is.

I never really thought of that………. very smart - U. It's all about getting us to buy when you least thinking about getting a cup of joe or whatever. Planting the idea of, oh I'll just pop in there (whatever store that is) to take a look.

If only Cafe Nero in the UK actually had a passbook app. I'm not a Starbucks fan.

I saw this today and took a screenshot at lunch. I was at Chipotle actually, but it's next to Chop't, so that's the icon that showed up. I would suspect that it's using the same location aware API and Apple has just added a call for the icon on the home screen. Definitely a great feature though!

Were you at the one across from Bryant Park?

While you're walking down the street staring at your phone's lock screen so hard that you miss the multi-coloured light up sign for Starbucks overhead, maybe you should consider why you installed their app in the first place, or allowed it to have location access.

Now who are you trying to offload responsibility to?

So essentially a significantly better implementation of Passbook, an already awesome service. Woot!

LOL, I see a lot of people are really happy to see Apple forcing advertising on their lockscreen....

Of course, Apple will charge Costco and Starbucks for it, it will charge you for the phone, too.

And I thought Google was ad-centric. :apple:

I certainly hope this "feature" is optional.
