I was hoping Apple would make the "slide to unlock" text white again with any wallpaper, instead of the ugly black. :(

I wasn't aware an app icon was advertising. It's not like it's taking up your whole lock screen.

For real? Why the heck do you think company logos and icons are so well protected and litigated. Why do you think companies pay millions to have their logos and icons be seen in a movie. Why do you think Nike and NorthFace puts their logos on every piece of clothing they make? Why do you think race cars are plastered with icons and logos? Why do you think laptop computer makers put their logos on the cover? After all, product owners already know who made them. They are big, big advertising!

If you didn't already have the app downloaded, then of course it's advertising for at least the app, if not also the associated store.

Some people won't mind. Some will. As already noted, hopefully it can be disabled.

It only shows up if you have the app downloaded and have allowed location services for that app. It's "Advertising" in the same way that my Delta ticket shows up when I go to the airport. Is that advertising for Delta? Sure, but I'm already a Delta customer.

**UPDATE** I didn't see the update that suggests it could pop up with suggestions for apps you don't have downloaded. That is definitely advertising at that point, I'm sure it will be able to be disabled in the final product.

Awesome stuff but still no default apps on iOS?

I would love to have this. But probably for another reason. I use "Yelp" a lot, I would love the default to be Yelp. Or better yet, since I am on it alot, automatically check me in when I go into a location. Could even give me a prompt if you will. But being able to have the icon as my default at the bottom would be nice.

Cool. Passbook already does this every time I go to Starbucks, Target or the movie theater when I have a ticket loaded. This seems like a natural extension of that feature.

I hope it can learn patterns. Maybe put Downcast in the grabber when I get to work, show Twitter or a news app in the morning or iBooks when I'm in bed at night? That would be really cool!

Sorry...I'm calling the image on the right "Watery Grave". Its kinda spooky and beautiful at the same time

This will suck the life out of that already horrible (as on 7.1) battery.

Is this really a thing for a lot of people? my 5 generally makes it through the day with plenty to spare unless I use maps heavily (like on a road trip if i forget to plug in and just leave the turn by turn instructions running). However, I'm not really what anyone would call a "power user" so... maybe it's just that I don't make it work as hard as most? Are other phones infinitely better battery wise?

This is basically what already happens with Passbook, but instead of a Banner it's an icon. The only other change just seems to be that there are more places available other than just Passbook.

no it's not amazing. It's too flat now.

Flat isn't so bad (it looked like there was still some shading going on in some of the icons), but it's the non-button buttons that are very bad. Contrary to iOS7 it looks like they figured out a nice compromise...make the top of a window grey and the buttons white without a border. That looks nice. Symbols just floating around in space, in iOS7, don't. All of that translucence is also just distracting. It doesn't add much of anything, except chew up a bunch of time in a presentation talking about it. It was mentioned so many times it was like they were trying to convince themselves it was a good thing. If we can turn that off I'll be happy. :)

Is it possible that Apple gets the data from the users itself? I haven't read the whole privacy statement from Apple, but it's possible that they track at which location the users are using their apps, for example at a train station, and then suggest these apps to others at that location.

I was at my gym, 24 Hour Fitness and saw the App store logo on the LS. It took me to the 24 hour App in the store.

But the screensizes are the same. Must be just a beta 1 issue.

This would not be a new change/bug in iOS 8. In the current version of iOS 7, the "side to unlock" text moves if you have notifications pending. It's not immediately obvious, but the image on the left from the original post has blurred out some notifications that are not present on the right. See my phone for reference (iPhone 5 running 7.1.1):

I thought this was something similar to when in the App Store it asks if you want to check out apps by location near you.

Seems this is an extension to push it to the lock screen.

I figure there will be an opt Out for this....probably already opted in, like Bluetooth
