Let's beat this "So, kinda like Passbook already does" dead horse a little more. All the way back to iOS 6.

So, can anyone report if Passbook still exists in iOS 8, or is it replaced by this new app-based thing? Is Passbook still there for those things without a dedicated app?

Network name is needed, you don't always know what Network you are on.

No other phone has it shown up top. If you are roaming though it will give you a headsup and give you the option to do it or not or a headsup. Not sure what situation you are talking about where you would need to know.

----------

No, actually we don't always know what network we're on. If you're traveling with an international SIM, you can see it change as you hop from country to country. With a local SIM with international roaming turned on, you can see when this occurs and when you're going to be gouged. Locally, there's the issue of whether you're connecting directly to your carrier or Microcell.

For some of us, these are useful reasons, which is why I've kept mine displayed even though I could remove it (since I'm jailbroken).

Again, Android doesnt have the network name up top and neither does Windows OS and if you have a situation like you say there, it will let you know and give you a warning if needed.
Just saying....it takes up space and still dont think it is needed if iOS would handle it better.

I dont do country hoping.

Is this really a thing for a lot of people? my 5 generally makes it through the day with plenty to spare unless I use maps heavily (like on a road trip if i forget to plug in and just leave the turn by turn instructions running). However, I'm not really what anyone would call a "power user" so... maybe it's just that I don't make it work as hard as most? Are other phones infinitely better battery wise?

I've noticed slight improvements with 7.1 but still struggle to make it through the day. I don't consider myself as a 'power user' either. Maybe a moderate user but definitely don't "make it work as hard as most". From what I've read in the past in the iOS 7 forum, I can summarise that a lot of people were/are struggling with battery life on iOS 7.

----------

You are more than welcome to switch to a different manufacturers. I suggest Samsung with their bigger battery.

Just because the current battery life is horrible I should consider moving to a Samsung device with bigger battery? I'm sure you're aware that despite that bigger battery, it gives almost equivalent usage as the iPhone. Did I once complain that this feature is not good? Did I once say that I don't like this feature or just because of poor battery life, I'm willing to give up on the user experience aspect?

No need to imply unnecessary things.

----------

If you don't like it (for battery reasons or privacy reasons, or any other reasons), you can turn off location services, or carry your phone in a lead case.

I'll definitely be looking at turing off the location services for this particular service. I've noticed significant improvements in battery life by allowing only specific apps to use location services. I'd rather have a battery in my phone that have the device suggest apps when I'm on the move. As far as cases are concerned, I like to keep my phone naked and admire the design. To each their own I guess.

This would not be a new change/bug in iOS 8. In the current version of iOS 7, the "side to unlock" text moves if you have notifications pending. It's not immediately obvious, but the image on the left from the original post has blurred out some notifications that are not present on the right. See my phone for reference (iPhone 5 running 7.1.1):

A bit off topic... Just wondering where did you get the wallpaper? :)

This will be awesome for Starbucks! I always hate my phone auto-locking when i am in the drive-through and when I pull my phone out of the cup holder for the girl to scan my barcode. There is a 6 or so step process to get back to that barcode after unlocking.

Ideal yet secure use.
--------------------------
Step 1) Tap StarBucks icon in the lower left corner

Step 2) Be prompted to authenticate with TouchID

result) My Starbucks gift card barcode is displayed

Yes, I drink way too much expensive coffee.

Yes, I am too lazy to get out of my truck and walk inside.

There's actually an even better function already available since iOS 7 (or even 6). You set up the app so that your barcode will be accessible from the lockscreen when near a Starbucks.

It basically uses the Passbook app and puts a Starbucks card in there. Very cool feature actually. This also applies to movie theaters that my have scanners for Passbook digital tickets.

Fantastic idea however from screenshots it looks a little strange with the icons squished. Hopefully it looks nicer in use or they'll polish it up.

I wonder if this will set the stage install-less apps in the future. For example walking into a bar and being able to see their full drinks menu just by swiping up.

I had it pop up and offer me my mobile banking app when I was stood outside my back... I'd love to know what they're using to determine the location/app relationship.

Saw someone asking about "Passbook" in iOS8, it is still there and also had a couple of minor tweaks in the current beta.

If you are roaming outside the US, depending on where you are the roaming carrier might change automatically if you have the carrier setting set to 'Auto'.

I'm not saying it should stay on top, but to say that you don't need this info at all because you already know who you're using is not correct.

no it's not amazing. It's too flat now.

Functionally it's amazing. It's finally starting to feel like the future. Yosemite makes Windows look like it's been running in place for two decades.

(Starbucks coffee is potting soil runoff...had to get that in there.)

Not that useful - really....

Unless I'm missing something, I'm not finding this to be all that useful.

If your phone is locked with a passcode or fingerprint - tapping the icon on the lock screen does nothing. You have slide the icon up and then unlock the phone - it's not the same interaction as the camera that just launches in to the app.

Totally understand that you'd want it locked - it's just a different interaction.

All I want is control over the "desktop." I want stickies and I want to be able to have zero apps on the opening page.

Um, so where's our subsidy pricing for this new ad delivery scheme?

It's one little icon today. But what happens when you're near both a McDonalds and a Starbucks, and they get into a home screen adcon (you heard the term here first!) bidding war? Apple will just let there be two icons. Then 4. Then 8. Eventually your home screen will become a roving strip mall flyer.

As an aside, did anyone else notice the iPhone they were using in their graphics was the new one?

That seems to have slipped by a LOT of people. The iPad render onscreen was accurate for the air, but the phone image was too thin to be a current device. My only question about that though, was the screen to bezel was accurate for a 5. But, they didn't show the button at the bottom, nor the speaker/camera at the top.

Bit of a mystery!

Sure it's advertising; you walk by Starbucks and you see the little icon pop up, you might not have been thinking of getting a coffee but your phone just planted the idea in your head. Now who's in charge?

It is advertising, but just seeing an app icon isn't going to turn me into a mindless drone and make me walk into the Starbucks lol. its harmless, unless you're really weak minded to the point that anything that pops up on your screen has the propensity to throw off your whole day :D

What's up with the different location of the "Slide to unlock" text in the screenshots?

I'm a bit late here, and perhaps someone's already answered this, but "slide to unlock" appears lower on the screen when notifications are/were on the lock screen to allow more room for notifications.

If someone is still somehow not in charge of their own decision making process for something simplistic as that...it seems like there would be bigger problems to deal with.

Well maybe in your opinion. Maybe you just havent used anything but a iPhone. I never said the info wasnt needed at all. If you go into a different network area on Android for example, it lets you know with a popup so you will always be notified. Im just saying having it up there all the time is just taking up space for something else like a notification or something.

ok

I noticed it worked for "my (employer's)" app too... Must pick up the info from the passbook pass. We've never used this particular address or location for app purposes, but in our passbook pass we've added the GPS coordinates.

I'm just saying i don't like the way it looks, i never said i had a problem with the way it preforms. But according to you, you would be okay being with a girl like precious just as much as a girl like kate upton because they both have the same functionality, to get you off. do i have that right? since you get stuff for what they do not how pretty they look?

Absolutely! Anyone that marries a gal for their looks is in for a big disappointment.

I'm a little concerned about the amount of battery that would use up.... if only they would put better batteries in their phones. I usually have to charge mine twice a day
