The signal bubbles don't really mean anything. I have no idea why they are actually there since the real indication of your signal strength is LTE, or 3g, or edge, or 1x(Verizon)
While the signal bars/dots don't tell the whole story and there's more to it all, they still tell something related to strength of the signal you are getting, while the signal name is really just that, the name. The signal bubbles don't really mean anything. Speechless

While the larger and widely spaced dots are more "glanceable" I would say that in general, given the somewhat limited information they represent, that's one of the least important things to see at a glance, especially when it comes to minute differences between just one or two bars/dots, since the difference between almost no bars and almost full bars is still fairly quick to see at a glance.I like the dots...they are, for me, more easily seen with a quick glance.
I'm very big on quick glancing.
I don't care how much space they take up as long as I can glance quickly.

Not only that but bars are more or less pretty much an industry standard, so moving away from them to something that really isn't any more better in any real and/or useful way (and to something that takes up more space too for no good reason), doesn't really make for a good or a needed change at all.
It wouldn't be so bad if only the black 'active' signal strength dots were shown, it's the empty circles which annoy me the most.
Give me bars every time tho'.
Could potentially make it somewhat more confusing for some of the more typical users who will see fully filled in dots and then sort of filled in ones. Why reinvent the wheel (bars for signal strength) at all when the existing wheel works just fine and doesn't need to be reinvented.I think if they reduced the size of the signal dots slightly, it might look a bit better. You don't truly notice how much of a space-waster the dots are until you see them in the lock screen when the status bar size is increased. Also instead of unavailable signal dots being hollow, they should be lightly greyed out. That would look much classier IMO. I still prefer bars though but tweaking the dots like that would be a step in the right direction.
I understand that the fact that the new iOS has a lot of bugs that need to be squashed but its funny how people used to complain that iOS was becoming stale and boring and needed a major design overhaul. When Apple listened to them, everybody started complaining how bad it was.
I hate iOS 7. I refused to upgrade my iPad 3 to that garbage. I have read numerous complaints on iOS 7. I am hoping beyond hope that Apple restores the look and feel that iOS 6 had. Better yet, bring back the guy that was fired. He knew his ****. I also cannot stand that iOS 7 uses dots for the signal bar. I have and never will accept this. Anyone else hoping that iOS 8 restores the classic iphone look? I wish iOS 6 was available for the iphone 5S with all its features. UGH.
my original reply to this was "lol"
but then the mods flagged me for a one word post
why are we allowed to have a bagillion threads on the same topic?
lots of people hate it, lots love it, lots don't care, but one thing is for certain: more iphones have sold than ever before, and apple would never go back to an old design. it's possible this one will change slightly with ios 8, but they won't be going back.
no wonder iphone users get a bad rep, they whine about every little thing
who the **** cares about signal bars???
Back when iOS was iPhone OS, it was great and fresh. But it grew old. It was tired. It was stale. It needed a change and the UI and design language of iOS 7 are much, much better.
iOS 7 has never lagged on my 5 to be honest........but what makes me hate iOS 7 is not the look, it's the performance. It even lags on my iPhone 5 sometimes when opening up the switcher and doing random tasks. iOS 6 never lagged - it was fast and fluid.
