App data will not be deleted of course, though YMMV during the beta I guess!

This is nice though, Apple doing lots of little things we wish they had done by iOS 4, but they're very welcome nonetheless...

eww just thought of this one what if the app is no longer on the app store i bet you loose it for good if you don't have it backed up to a computer and that will be an issue with the fleet of iPads i deal with as well as consumers who often have devices for communication i hope there is a warning for this

You can still restore apps not on the app store from a backup so maybe this would work the same way.

Just seen this on Twitter (mind the profanity):

I assume that it will simply remove as many big apps as needed and keep the data in place. That's how I would make it at least. :p

It would be patently ridiculous if the app was reinstalled without the data. That's not Apple's style. At least I hope not!

I assume they're only going to do this for Apps that either don't have any locally stored data... or apps that only store data in iCloud.

Seems like quite a tricky thing to get right... if it goes awry people could easily lose data.

Also: think about stuff like Spotify. It is the largest app I have on my phone (currently ~8GB). I have all of that music saved offline for listening on the subway. If Apple blows away Spotify and reinstalls it... I now have a chore ahead of me to re-download many hundreds of songs.

I don't see this being all that popular of an option...

You have nothing to worry about at all.
It will install Beats Music instead and you'll have a 3 months free trial.
At the same time it will convert your Spotify off line song library and refund you $ 100.

That sound about right?

Great idea. I guess they do a temporary iCloud backup/restore for the relevant Apps. Clever and a good way to increase iOS9 update.
My guess would be to delete the app itself, and not the data, and when the app is re-downloaded, the hooks will reattach. Changes in the app delete routines in the O/S should be able to do this pretty easily.

Gosh I wonder if they thought of this!

Is that sarcastic? Apple has had zero problem blowing away local app data since day one of the App Store. It's never been easy to predict when deleting an app or backing up and restoring on iTunes vs. iCloud is going to leave you with a wiped out app. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if this feature blew away data without warning or apology.

I've stopped relying on apps that store any local data. I now consider it a design flaw if developers choose this means of storage.

nice but i guess i will never see this pop up as i currently have 38GB remaining on my 64gb iphone 6. upselling worked on me, i used to always get the entry model but not this time around

why not simply add a clear cache button in the app overview tho

you have to wonder... what is a greater threat to the bottom line?

the amount of resources and time needed to create this "feature"
OR
selling devices with an adequate amount of storage in 2015

This feature benefits people that have all sizes and is the better approach in the long run.

That being said they should still offer 32GB minimum.

Here's an idea! Make the minimum storage on an iPhone 32GB instead of 16GB, welcome to 2015 Apple!!! 2010 say's thanks for staying so long!

Everyone's iPhone is always full. People with 32GB phones don't have an easier time with the updates. They have more pictures and videos and other stuff they never delete.

How about just starting phones at 32GB? Now that's an even better solution.

Because it tricks the consumer into thinking they're getting a better deal or 'more for their money' when they pay the extra to go from 16GB>64GB, compared to 32GB>64GB. Furthermore, far less people would be inclined to pay the extra if the base storage was 32GB, because that would be enough storage for a majority of people (whereas I'd argue 16GB is laughable, seeing as it's been the base storage since the iPhone 3GS).

And the trouble is that they can't really now up the base storage to 32GB for the next iPhone as they know that'll make people less inclined to upgrade to the 64GB. Furthermore if they actually adhered to their own rhetoric about making the best products in the world and caring solely about consumers, upping the base storage to 64GB would result in a media crapstorm because people would realise how badly they've been getting ripped off.

This is, of course, all conjecture; we're talking about a company who still sells 8GB iPhone 5Cs at an off-contract price that can only be described as extortionate. I do appreciate the top-spec products but any love I had is going down the pan. I wish they weren't so profit-oriented. And yet when they announce how much money they've made, we all cheer :(
