Why is it so important to you people that everyone be convinced of your chosen platform's superiority over the other?

A lot of people have insecurity issues, and it's one way of saying 'they're better than you' ... It's pretty sad if you ask me.

iOS 5 was a nice step forward and I'm definitely going to enjoy the update.

Most of the "this is better" garbage is from young immature teens. Grown adults couldn't care less about what others thought. Just ignore the comments you don't want to see. The ignore feature works really well. :)

@elfy

Some people benifit by the other platform sucking. It can be discribed as so:

1. Bash other platform
2. Get others to hate it
3. Suggest your favorite platform
4.
5. Profits!

See all makes sense if you don't think about it

I know right? Its like... they come on here. They get on their soap box and just blah blah blah blah... Ok we get it. Android has a new device that doesn't suck as hard as they used to anymore. Why do you have to try to convince someone?

If you like it fine, if not, fine. Either way its not necessary to worry about what another man wants. Worry about what YOU want.

Completely agree.

iOS 5 made iOS a much better mobile OS, something that is long overdue, but i'm glad that it happened. I can finally enjoy using an iPhone as a smartphone now.

There's no need to be offended by other people's opinions.

Another thing people get petty over is thinness of tablets. The media also loves to talk about this.

Think about things this way:
Without all the Android users out there testing stuff out on their bleeding edge OS, how would Apple users know which technologies are good and which technologies aren't? Newest tech is not always better. Just look at WP7 and all the stuff that OS has offered. MS had versioning and synchronized backup way before Apple on their server OS. While useful, it was a pain to use and had it's own little quirks. Apple transformed that technology into Time Machine and the new Versioning system on OSX Lion. This is being given to consumers in a very digestible format so they can see value in such a technology. iOS is no different. Copy and Paste wasn't included until iOS3. Now we are finally seeing iOS go "PC-Free". While the tech has trailed other OSs, it's led the way in terms of user experience and actual usefulness.

Android isn't a phone. Question is meaningless.

While technically meaningless, you would hard pressed to find anybody who would be even slightly confused be the question.
The core of this thread is about the platforms iOS vs Android. Most the features discussed in this thread are common to all current android phones.
The distinction matters more to manufactures than end users since they will have a harder time differentiating their product. This is why nokia didn't go with Android.

Fans of either OS care more about the platform than the phone. So long as the phone properly supports the OS's latest bells and whistles, they are happy.
I buy the latest iPhone to better experience the OS.

Go out into the streets in the real world and ask 100 people which phone has more swag, iPhone or Android, and get back to me with your results.

See that little guy winking? ;) <------
I was just being a ball buster, nothing more.
I could give a **** what some other phone does if I am happy with what mine does for me.

I do hope that more people take this point of view when the next set of smartphone OS figures do the rounds. Plenty of people on these boards are uninterested in the numbers citing "you can't compare android as a whole versus one phone" with complaints of a similar ilk.

In a similar sense, iPhone is a limited set of two current devices, Android is a whole platform running on a plethora of different hardware, from the low end ZTE Blade/HTC Wildfire S to the high end stuff like the SGS II, Motorola Atrix and HTC Sensation. Even within the platform, these phones are worlds apart and will most likely have different levels of "swag".

Which in my opinion is a bad bad thing for android. Ok sure, choice is always better and i wholeheartedly agree but...

Before iPhone came out, which of these OEMs, you know the samsung, lg, htc, motorola, sony were pushing a hugely revolutionary smartphone that also had a great OS? None. Who came out and helped all these lazy buggers? Google with their android. Who is now suffering because of this? People who genuinely love android but have to put up with these crappy OEMs.

Case in point, the exact same gingerbread ran on my Xperia Arc, on the captivate (custom ROm ofcourse), The SGS2, the Nexus S and the old HTC legend (custom ROM). Sure their are overlays, but the basic OS is the same. Problem is, none of these guys have optimized the OS to their particular device, all they do is compile kernels compatible with their hardware drivers (which also suck a lot btw) and slap the main OS on top. Then push it out to customer with a custom skin on it. The SGS2 for example is like 100 times more powerful than the captivate but runs the same OS, just that those monster specs push it faster.

But what exactly do I gain from the new phone? Just bigger screen and better hardware. But then I end up using it less because the phone dies faster, the android quirky ness is still there, the unpolished and unoptimized side heavily shows. Android is not to be blamed IMO because it is open source to begin with. But I have NO faith in all these same "giants".

Let's see google licence android to Apple under the conditions they cannot modify the open source behavior (just imagine this for the time being okay?). Then lets see apple make hardware and place the OS on an idevice...

I can bet you anything the same android will run more optimized, with much better battery life and giving you all the options (since google hypothetically made apple not to close it so much). Would anyone buy a samsung,lg, motorola, sony phone?

I don't hate android and it is not bad. But i prefer iOS simply because it is in tune with the product it runs on. Simple. The fact Apple has a few devices to be powered also makes it easy for them by the way.

Just my 2c.

I totally agree with you that OEM's can ruin a device but even worse is the carrier interference. I started Android on an Orange uk branded HTC Hero which had constantly delayed updates while orange ruined the firmware with their customisations and apps. Luckily for me, google had an answer for the update situation with the Nexus One.

As soon as it was announced I ordered one for import from the US and it really showed me the best of the platform. My experiences with the Nexus range of Android devices are what I expect from Android now and I couldn't ever see myself getting a non google sanctioned handset.

Done of the other own customisations have proven successful (judging by HTC going from a simple ODM to the well recognised brand they are today). Some of the custom stuff is well executed and having a model like Android's means that at risein market penetration was easier than anyone expected it to be.

In the wrong hands there is no doubt in my mind, Android can be a dog but with some of the higher end stuff it really is a decent platform imo.

I do suspect I'll switch platforms eventually as iOS 5 is fantastic and Apple have improved the os immensely since I first used iOS 2.x but I am pleased that between Android and iOS that we have 2 decent, powerful anne strong platforms doing well.

Its good that we are now away from the worlds of Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Thanks for the valid and concise points you've added to the discussion. It's posts like yours I enjoy reading and responding to and makes this forum worth membership.

Yeah personally i feel android is superior to iOS. But i refuse to use a motorola, lg, sony or samsung handset. If the next nexus is from HTC i might consider it. I find htc quality and experience to be leagues better than those consumer appliances turned smartphone maker companies.

I'm wondering how long it would take before you're punched in the face for using the word "swag"....

And I'm wondering how sad life must be in Kansas...

Still hatin huh? Nuttin better to do...

Like I'm really concerned about someone who doesn't know the difference between an OS and a phone. Post reported.
