September 12th really is a make-or-break day for Apple, it seems.

There's a definite shift going on nowadays in the smartphone market and whether it continues depends on how good the iPhone 5 is and whether they announce new features with iOS 6.
The thing is that Apple has a history of not really adding more to what has already been revealed. In all likelihood, the phone and the OS will look the same save for the obvious things like NFC and LTE and much improved innards (that will probably resemble the Galaxy S3's innards)

Let's just wait for the end of the year to see how Apple fared with the iPhone 5 and iOS6 combo. I guarantee that every major publication will take note of a significant drop in sales for iPhone and an increase in sales for Android and WP8 handsets.

Everything Apple has been doing this year so far is clearly an indication that they're slacking off and enjoying their loyal userbase. However, Steve is gone, some of their "magic" is gone and Apple can no longer sell themselves very well. Just look at their Celebrity and Genius ads. They're even failing in the Marketing department where they typically do well.

This will be the year that iPhone will be considered stagnant. Just watch.
people said this last year and the year before..;)

You're giving us a guarantee but the question is why should we believe your prognostications when you've never been proven to be correct as far as I can see.

I'm game though. We'll file this for claim chowder. What some of you don't seem to realize is that the next iPhone is going to ship across more vendors than ever. China, an area of growth for Apple, has a lot of support in iOS 6.

Cali your posts are always long on rhetoric and opinion and short on technical facts. That's why the only people here that take you seriously are the iPhone haters on the boards.

Folks on here would like to think that Apple's fortunes hinge upon their acceptance of the next iPhone. The truth is Apple 68% marketshare in tablets and it appears like next month we can put on end to the 4s comparisons to phones that are a few months old.

I was in an Apple store recently for a half hour and I counted 5 iPads being sold while I was there. The interesting thing is how divorced from reality some of the posts on this board are. Apple announced an increase in iPhone sales overall. They didn't quite make the streets numbers but the numbers increased overall and that's with a lineup where the newest phone is 8 months old.

I'll take any bet you guys want to toss out. iOS 6 and the next iPhone are good enough to increase sales.

I think you mis-understood my point. I'm not saying the iPhone is a failing product.

My point is that iPhone took over from Blackberry as the biggest smartphone on the block and is now being challenged by Android. Apple need to come up with something special (again) to ward off that challenge and continue their dominance.

And the iPhone's sales numbers DID increase but then so did the smartphone market itself...

get a job, stop being poor, and upgrade.

Are you serious? Since when did not upgrading a phone that's only ONE generation old become the equivalent of being poor?

If a phone works perfectly, what's the point in upgrading it?

BTW people get locked into 2/3 year contracts. Do you suggest they break their contracts just so they can have turn-by-turn navigation on their phone?

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Apple is good at springing surprises on people.

Apple have announced and shown off iOS6 so unlikely to have any new features.

For a good example of this think about Mountain Lion. Apple showed this off before release and the final version had no surprises in terms of new features.

Edwin

ok, lets say that this doesnt seem right for a "big" update..

but who says its a "big" update? its just a lot of minor changes, that come with 1 download.

Instead of whining about something Apple does to every product they have, maybe come with some constructive suggestions instead.

what changes (that are realistic) would you like to have seen in 6.0?

Before the 4S iOS 5 was announced without Siri. Apple will probably have something big held back for the 5.

Here's what I said in another thread.

  • Allow 3rd party apps to add things to Notification Center
  • Add toggles to Notification Center for things like Wifi
  • Add Phone app to Notifications so that when you get a call, you get a pane with 2 buttons: answer and reject so you can continue what you are doing without interruption
  • Revamp Messages app with quick reply feature. Answer texts while you're in another app, if you want.
  • Revamp Messages app to be equal to the one on OSX by adding support for AIM, Yahoo!, Google Talk, and Jabber accounts.
  • Allow Email app to attach any file from any app.
  • Allow Safari to upload any file and download files to supported apps.
  • New feature: iCall. Call any iOS device via Wifi or 3G with all the features of carrier calls. Instead of voicemail, you can have a caller send the other iOS user an iMessage instead if the other party isn't available, and the iMessage will show up the next time they are connected to data or Wifi.

There, that would have been enough to satisfy nearly everybody this year but Apple decided to milk the public a little more and squeak out a lackluster iOS6.

I am pretty disappointed like many others are, last year we got at least notification center but this year I dont really know what I can chain with iOS 6, maybe the clock app on the ipad haha :D okay maps isn't bad but I wasn't really unsatisfied with Google Maps so far (of course maps is a beta, I know)

get a job, stop being poor, and upgrade.

Nice, so I'm poor and jobless for not giving away money for a relatively minor spec bump upgrade for turn by turn directions that I guarantee the jailbreak community with have working on the 4. I don't care about siri, withholding turn by turn is ridiculous.

Talk to my carrier to allow me to upgrade first. I got the iPhone 4 in 2010, and my carrier won't let me upgrade until 2014. It's not about being poor or getting a job.

I don't like losing features when your phone gets old but then again the OS slows down on older phones even when the features are restricted.

My main question is where are you based? Here in the UK no carrier would still be in business if they locked you to the same phone hardware for 4 years! The length of a long contact here is 24 months (2 years) and most people go for the 12 or 18 month contacts.

I don't think I have even seen a 48 month contact! But carriers in some countries with monopolies are pretty shocking.

I'm in Canada. They stacked my contract when I upgraded. I had one year left on my old contract from the iPhone 3G, and tacked on the three years for my iPhone 4.

The map systems entire point is that is gets fed by user data. Right now it only has a million or so devices feeding into it because it is a BETA. Why do you think this wont massively scale once hundreds of millions of devices start feeding into the system?

I feel like people should at least understand the limitations of using crowdsourcing based technologies when they are still way under the scale its designed for. Or to put it simply, its a BETA! Let it get released and watch how good it really gets.
Crowdsourcing is for there traffic data, not mapping. The same technology is used by other TomTom navigation systems.

get a job, stop being poor, and upgrade.

Or Apple could just add features into what is now standard for all/most smartphones.

I think Apple still is and will remain the darling of the press regardless of what they release. I can't explain that anymore than I can explain people falling all over themselves to fawn over this half-baked stretched screen it looks like we'll be getting.

I'll add:
-Move photos between folders in photo app (not just add)
-Improved experience with iTunes purchased video content. (I have to go to iTunes, download to device, then switch to videos app to watch)
-More sorting and metadata in videos app. Sort by last date watched, date released, etc.
-More granular information about 3/4G usage. A graph would be awesome.
-Redesign music app for iPad (specifically, I want a text view of my music, not just cover based)
-Vertical screen mode - option to scroll vertically through app icons (rather than horizontally). It should scroll smoothly like a web page.
-Download photos and files directly from safari to dropbox or other cloud platforms (I'm looking for an API that would allow developers to add this)
-Select a different background for each day of the week (or rotate every x min/hour)
-Live clock icon
-Remove extra bar that appears when hotspot is activated. It breaks the display of many apps.
-Don't use TomTom (Teleatlas) for 2D maps

I don't know Sedrick. I've seen a few articles on major news site that aren't fawning over the new iphone design rumors. I was kind of surprised to be honest.

That said. I'm sure there will be a ton of pro press when the new iPhone is released

What's meant by:

I mean double tap works but it can be improved on.

My iPhone 4 home button is already kinda broken because of repetitive pressing.

With the iPad 3 because of its 1GB RAM and stuff they could do something like Mission Control or something.

Or like swipe with 4/5 fingers to activate it and you could see like what apps are active.

For iPhone it could be like the "cards" effect.

Also since they probably keep the current one, at least give us an option to clear all apps at once.
