Flyover and Navigation on iPhone 3gs/4

I don't know why Apple didn't include flyover and turn by turn navigation on the iPhone 4. Most people think that it is because of the A5 processor. Flyover might need that, but turn by turn navigation does not need a faster processor to run. Also Siri was not included on the iPad 2, even though it had the A5 processor, just like the 4S.

Feature dropping most likely occurs for one or more of the following:

  1. There's a technical reason like cpu or ram or 64 bit
  2. There's a cost reason like it would take x no of man hours to program for the older hardware of which they will get no return
  3. Programmed obsolesence in that if the old one has most of the features why would consumers buy the new one

The first is understandable, the second is frustrating, the third hopefully doesn't happen...

It's a free update. Your argument is invalid.

Considering people have jailbroken Siri on the 4, it's most likely a feature they want exclusively on their newer devices. I understand why, but I don't have to agree with their choice. the 4 is just slightly over a year old.

The people I know that have used Siri on the 4 say it's slower and not as good compared to the 4S, so I see why apple limited it.

The iPhone 4 is just over 2 years old, not 1

Just so people understand why new features are not on older model phones and to follow up on Shandymans excellent post here are a few dates.

iPhone 3GS - June 2009 - ~ 3 years & 2 months old.
iPhone 4 - June 2010 - ~ 2 years & 2 months old.
iPhone 4S - 10 months old.

As you can see the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS are a lot older than the iPhone 4S so it should not be a huge surprise than the newest phone machine with at least twice the power of the older models can support more features than the rest.

Talk to my carrier to allow me to upgrade first. I got the iPhone 4 in 2010, and my carrier won't let me upgrade until 2014. It's not about being poor or getting a job.

There are plenty of turn by turn apps that work on the iPhone that are not expensive and there are some good free ones as well

Apple has got a new motto now.. why innovate when you can just patent it and sue for infringements?

If Apple goes after Google's Android next, then they really won't have any competition apart from WP8.

I can see how this verdict will also drive people to get away from Apple for litigating more than they innovate lately.

Why can't android sue apple for the notification centre? I thought that was a patent...

Lol as if joe public really care about that. The average person probably doesn't even know what all this is about. I know a lot of my friends that aren't geeks definitely don't and they still like their iPhones.

Only a small niche group of people think like you do, so really, this result will do squat to sales, etc.

Apple cares little about what people expect from their new products and they have their very own team that makes the decisions of new features/additions who only partly live in the real world.

It is very frustrating that in theory an iPhone should be a very useful and advanced mobile device yet I've found that very often when I need it the most to be reliable it turns out to be buggy, non-intuitive, slow, in other words not working at all as expected.

Another example is what they did with iPhone 5, they didn't make the display bigger for a better experience, they made the display longer so that they can bug us with more ads, yay! more spammy, irritating ads on the iphone, that's what I want to spend my money on!

Well, since we're on it, here are my requests: a much longer usb charging cable, a radio receiver, turn by turn navigation for everyone, better battery life, way faster response to OS bugs, better quality control for the apps, more freedom to customise, a non-beta version of the iCloud. I assume that NFC and 4G are on the way, or they're a joke of a company.

Lol, what? When does your iPhone (I'm assuming you have a 4S) lag and/or become unreliable, slow, or non-intuitive? My family has 2 of them and they're lightning fast and never slow down. Battery life is just fine; my mother and sister easily make it through a day with 30-40% battery left.

Also, on the 4-inch display, what are you even talking about with this "more ads" nonsense? They aren't going to put ads all over the iPhone's home screen, if that's what you're implying(?).

If you want a longer charging cord, buy one of those 6-feet long ones off of Amazon at the expense of having your battery take longer to charge. For the radio "issue": download iHeartRadio. Boom. You can now listen to any radio station. Turn-by-turn nav will be available everywhere when iOS 6 is released. Battery life is fine as I've said before, and will most likely be better on the next iPhone than it is on the iPhone 4S. There are no bugs that I've found so far in the past year of using iOS 5, so that's a non-issue, and if you're referring to iOS 6, well then bugs are to be expects as its still in beta. Apps on iOS are great... Don't really know how they could get better. If you want freedom to customize, you're using the wrong device. Apple is known for being locked down. If you want customization, you'll need to switch to Android. iCloud works fine for me, dunno what's wrong with yours. NFC will most likely be coming with Passbook along with the next iPhone, same with 4G LTE.

I don't mean to sound rude in my post, but most of the things you posted about are non-issues.

People need to stop complaining and switch to android... It's getting irritating that people who now have android complain about apple... Insecure??

Lay down the crack pipe. Apple patents are as old as the original iPhone, when Samsung was still building dumb phones and rice cookers.

yes technically now it is 2years old. when everyone was complaining why it wasn't included in iphone 4 it was only 1year old.

i think apple believes that the patent may not be granted, because it has become prior art.
google did not file the patent before implementing the feature.

could also be because of that, apple took years before implementing it.

If you actually go ahead and read the patent, Apple doesn't actually infringe on any of the actual claims.

Did you read the patent? The new notification system doesn't display the alert at the top of the screen? The notification system doesn't display over time and signal items on the screen? The notification system doesn't display notifications in a central location? The patent is almost exactly what Apple did.
