One of the biggest differences for me is the extra RAM. I used to only be able to have 2 Apps stored in memory before the others had to be purged. Now I can keep 6 stored in memory at one time. Also, using Atomic Web Browser, I have yet to run into the "low memory warning please close tabs to free up memory" that I used to run into all the time with only like 3-4 tabs open. Even posting on Macrumors I can type much more quickly and fluidly than I could on the iPad 1. Just that alone, for me, is why the iPad 2 is worth a better value.

When the iPad 3 comes out, I'll sell my iPad 2 for 100$-150$ less than I bought it for. Versus if I kept my iPad 1 up until the iPad 3 release I would sell it for 200$-300$ less than what I bought it for. So Im really losing the same amount of money only I'm not using the latest and greatest.

The smart thing was to not get the iPad1 until the iPad2 was announced, then buy iPad1 for a $150 discount as a refurb.

The slimness of the new version and camera was nice, but the placement of the speaker is bad. The smart cover is a waste of good money because it slips off and offers no protection to the back.

I admit I played this one wrong. I was hot to get an iPad2 because it was an excuse to give my iPad1 to my brother (who couldn't have afforded it else-wise) but I vastly overestimated stock and underestimated demand.

I'll get an iPad2 eventually but the iPad1 Refurb is an even better buy right now. And by the time iPad2 stock stabilizes it may be an Android device that makes more sense.

End of the day you have to decide what you'll use your device for. Mine started as a gaming and productivity machine. It settled down as an ebook reader, video player and web surfer.

I have never seen that warning on our iPad, seriously I have not; and I have had countless apps open at once. For example:
Pageonce
1password
Angry birds (wife's)
engadget
MR, + 4 safari windows
PDF expert
Call of Duty, Zombies (my son's)
BBC news
ReaddleDocs
iDisk
mail

The above I just ended up closing this am, as everyone forgets to do this at times.

Is your ram issue a common one? or defective?

On my first gen I can have more than 2 apps running without having to delete any. I also can type quickly in Macrumors. Sounds like you might have had a bum iPad 1 unit.

At one point after first getting my iPad 1, I had ALL of the apps opened at once until I found out that you had to manually close them out, and I never had any noticeable slowdown or memory warning issues.

You guys do not understand how application multitasking works in iOS. Just because the apps are listed in the "multi-tasking" bar does not mean they are running. It is a list of RECENTLY used apps. They may be running, in a saved state, or completely closed. You have no way of telling unless you are jailbroken and running a utility.

When you "close" them with the little x, you are just removing them from the list. If they are running or in a saved state in memory, they will be actually closed along with being removed from the recent list. If not, they will be removed from the recently list only.

It is extremely unlikely that all those apps were still saved in memory.

The original iPad may be a better value, but only in the short term. When the iPad 3 is released the iPad 2 will likely still have a decent resale value while the original iPad's value will have fallen significantly. The iPad may be a better value but the iPad2 may be a better investment. That being said i dont think you can go wrong either way.

True, but you would've saved $500* (now) not buying the iPad2 which you could then use to buy the 3. Also, you would have had an extra 12 months to earn more money. Bonus: The orig's resale will still be decent in March '12. $250 at least, I'd say.

*I'm referring to people upgrading. First time buyers save $150

Was replying to Lotso's post on his Ram issue. See his post.
Maybe you can help him

My argument and the OP's as well I believe was about buying an iPad1 now at the lower price, not about upgrading. If you bought the iPad 1 at the original price then i agree upgrading to the iPad 2 may not be the best value or the best investment.

Price wise its hard to say what the original iPad will be worth in a years time. Look how much the value fell once people started dumping them for the iPad2. When the iPhone 4 was released i think the going rate for a 3G was about $75.

As someone who didn't get an iPad 1, and now is looking at close to a month if you don't camp out for days for a 2

I'm seriously considering getting a refurb....the 2's cameras's are pretty garbage..and after that smarter covers and slightly thinner don't seem enough for the headache of trying to get one.

Have an iPad 1. Bought iPad 2 for family. Have been using all along and yes the iPad 2 is far faster. It is extremely smooth like the iPhone 4 and just works much better. Is there a need to upgrade from 1st? No. I think the 3rd will have better improvements and some game changing feature - that may be worth it.

I totally agree with the OP , for gamers and people who use webcams yes this update is worth it, but for me I haven't used a webcam in like a year and still haven't used FaceTime with my iPhone 4, and games? I find most of the games on iOS devices **** at the moment in fact they are pathetic.

Maybe in a years time the games will improve and bigger titles will move onto the iOS devices but by that time the iPad 3 will come out with even better specs so the point is mute.

In reality I'm just going to use the iPad for surfing, listening to music, watching YouTube , Facebook , news and magazine apps , and this iPad 2 will not improve my use enough to justify paying 200+ more.

I have seen the iPad 2 and at the moment the speed difference of opening apps and surfing in 2 seconds faster at best .

Can I afford an iPad 2? Almost certainly, will I buy it ? No chance, it's better to buy cheap and wait for next years iPad 3

I just did better than that, buying the 64gb 3G from AT&T for $529 new (a great price that likely won't last long)! $300 below the iPad2 price makes the original iPad a no brainer IMO.

I'll now skip the 2nd generation and not buy again till iPad 3 comes out.

Apples to oranges. I highly, HIGHLY doubt the first gen will sell for $75.

I was looking at that today for my mom, did you have to add a data plan. That is a stellar price! 64 gb 3G for 529; crazy.

1 month of data is required, but if you get the 2gb data plan you also get a month free. You can cancel the data after 1 month. No contract required.

I think it's a great deal, even with 1 month of data tacked on.

Someone who BUYS an ipad 3 and has an iPad 2 will def have a better resale value than an iPad 1 yet the iPad 1 owner should still be on top financially for not having spent money on the iPad 2 to start with UNLESS they get their money back and then some for the iPad 2

I can't really understand your rationalizing?

Buy iPad 1 - 350 loss in a year for iPad 3
Buy iPad 2 - 499 loss and 300 gain on resale at iPad 3 time.

Kinda makes the iPad1 150 more expensive than the 2.

Also, iPad1 in a year -> possibly outdated.
iPad 2 in a year, same boat as iPad 1 now.

At least that's what I've been telling me for the past couple of days, wondering whether to get a 1 or 2.

Hardcore gamers, speed demons, real estate guys, those who can't stand checkerboards or refreshing of tabs and love a dash of Photobooth should just get the iPad 2.

Regular users on a budget who just want a better web experience than the one from your phone, get the original iPad.

If you have an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4,
I don't really see the point in getting iPad 2 JUST for it's cameras.
9x GPU still doesn't beat the Retina display.
Same 512 RAM as iPhone 4, just that there's a dual-core processor, like I said, only speed demons will notice the difference.

How is the iPad 1 a 350 loss in a year?
Are you implying that the iPad is now more expensive in the long run than the 2?

Hmmm, are you sure you all of those apps were saved in memory and not just on the list? Like were all of Safari's 4 pages still loaded or did you have to refresh them? I don't mean to insult your intelligence, I just find it hard to believe those were all saved in memory with only 256MB, especially the Call of Duty game.

Technically a netbook would be a better value than an ipad1, as would a Nook color, an ipod touch, and a AM/FM radio

I am implying that in a year from now (03/2012), you won't get more than 50$ for your iPad 1st gen, once iPad 3 has been announced and released.

If you are NEW to an iPad and buy a refurb 1st gen for 350 now, I suspect you have to make do with that money being lost in a year.
If not totally, at least to the largest degree.

As opposed to an iPad2 for 499 now, which I suspect you'll be able to sell for 350 in 03/2012.
