I'm not insensitive to the point you're making, but the reality is the iPad will get updated. Whether its a month or two months from Valentine's Day, it's happening. Apple will want to tell people about it.

Yes, I think they are trying to make a point by saying since apple is marketing ipad 1 still heavily for 2/14, they won't make fool of themselves by trying to make an announcement 13 to 14 days later when people can potentially return their gift.

So therefore, no announcement for ipad 2 in feb for 100% sure..

Apple holds an event every March/April for a developer preview of iOS. Last year (iOS 4) it was held in April but the 2 previous years it was in March. Maybe the iPad will be "One More Thing..."

More like the other way around. The iPad will be the focus and the preview of new software features to go with it will be the other thing

As for all the poor sales talk, Apple would be expecting this. They will do like they do with other items and slow or halt production, especially since most folks are expecting an update soon and aren't buying. So there won't be much if anything in the channel to worry about.

It would have to be available immediately after announcement, otherwise they're shooting themselves in the foot and missing out on a month worth of iPad sales.

An announcement at the end of February will leave a month of poor sales for March. What people should be expecting is a week difference between the announcement at the very most.
In the US, yes. But if the rumors are true about a staggered international roll-out, then that danger gets mitigated. If Apple is still rolling out iPad 1 in new countries during the period between the announcement of iPad 2 and sale in the only market in which it will be available, the losses could be blunted.

Is it just me or is the bezel around that screen a lot thinner than the current iPad? I mean look how close the Home button is to the edge?

In what way does an announcement late February and release in March indicate a month between announcement and release?

Apple will announce an event all around iOS 5. That event is NOT going to be in February. iPad will be one more thing. Availability will be instant.

In the US, yes.
Let's just stop there then.

:
I don't know. Apple advertises and sells all its products right up until their refresh/redesign. With that said, I agree that April is the most likely timeframe for the next iPad. But an announcement event could happen by the end of this month.

But if you stop there, the substance of my point evaporates. According to other rumors, Apple will be selling the first iPad around the world for quite some time after iPad 2 is available exclusively in the United States. So while sales of iPad 1 may dry up in the US after announcement, there's no reason for people around the globe to stop buying. (Aside from the obvious one, I guess.)

I was never talking about international release dates nor was I telling anyone when they should stop buying which is why your point is irrelevant.

I think you've failed to grasp it, actually. While you think about it some more, consider that additionally, Apple could reduce the price of the version 1 hardware to help prop up sales in the interim until the release of iPad 2. Which, a lot of Apple observers expect that iPad 1 will continue on for new sales as a low-end/low-priced option. How that dove-tails with the international rollout, I'm not exactly sure.

My point, which isn't irrelevant, is that a month-long lead time between announcement of iPad 2 and sale of iPad 2 doesn't necessarily mean that sales of iPad 1 will dry up. So, such an announcement made in late February isn't out of the question.

Can’t wait :D

But:
I don’t think that Apple will release the iPad 2 before February 9 ...
Maybe 17th ...

We will see

If they will release the iPad 2 on February 9, would they burn money and the customer would be scared away....

So let’s hope that Apple reads our comments and get under pressure (like gizmodo did last year)

Hurry up Apple. My kids have taken over control of my iPad. I need my own.

I am with you ... I have to order a new iPad, no matter if they update, minor update or major update, the rest of the family took control of mine. The only question is do I order one or two? :D

Can I pre-order the new one now? Don't care what's updated, I need additional iPads. The current iPad is great, the new update will be probably even better :)

Unless Apple significantly improves iOS, I might be buying a Honeycomb tablet.

enjoy and have fun - I will enjoy my iPad

Buddy, I haven't failed to grasp anything. If anything you're the one that doesn't understand the fact that your international argument is pointless. Your suggestions are unheard of in Apple's world. Give me one example where they have dropped the price of the product they are going to be releasing soon, chances are you won't be able to find anything as of recent if at all. The international rollout is irrelevant in this conversation, stop bringing it up. We are talking about the US release. Whenever Apple decides to release the iPad 2 in Afghanistan, Portugal, Russia, etc. is not of concern to the discussion at hand. A month-long lead time WOULD dry up iPad sales in the US and leave a bunch of people who just got an iPad for Valentines day(which Apple is pushing) still be in the return period. You can keep on playing the international drum but the last day of February is still in the return period for iPad's purchased on Valentine's day. An announcement in February is not happening, and the original source posted on this article is sketchy at best with question marks and guessing written all over the damn article.

Yeah, like I thought, you didn't understand what I was saying. Apple sells a brand new iPhone 3GS alongside its iPhone 4 offerings. What I meant is that Apple will likely keep an iPad around alongside iPad 2 as a low cost offering.

i'm sorry but thats not going to happen. they will perhaps start selling a 8GB model if anything. 8GB is just fine for an ipod touch but an ipad needs more.

This is too funny. I never said that Apple didn't sell the iPhone 3GS along the iPhone 4. I said that Apple has never dropped the price of a product that was going to be released soon. Example: Before the iPhone 4 was released, the 3GS did not receive a price drop.

Again, you provide another irrelevant example. Whether Apple keeps the original iPad in the lineup doesn't matter. The sales will still be affected by it if at the very least the high end models that will be completely replaced. I love how you ignored the rest of my post about the return period. Guess it completely demolished your frivolous argument a little too much.
