Just called and they told me that they had the 32GB wifi black in stock and that the order was being held due to the smart cover. They asked me if I would like to have the items shipped individually, of course!!! They said it would either ship out today or tomorrow.

Cool. They got some of these in! I'm probably WAY down the list so my JR order most likely will get to me first...
 
not really a big deal since it wouldnt have reached me this week anyways but b&h does not ship in order all the time. me and my friend ordered the same exact model and shipping but he ordered 30 mins after me. his shipped out yesterday and my status is still sent to warehouse.

J: They do ship in order, did your friend order the same exact model and same exact color?

d: same exact model, same exact color, same exact shipping method

J: Do you have his order number so I can look into this?

d: i dont but i have his phone number if you can look it up that way

J: Sure what is it please

J: You friends shipped from a different warehouse. There was an error in our system

d: ok thanks. so they dont ship in order

To me.. shipping priority isn't a big deal.

It's order fulfillment that matters. If I'm #200 in line for the same SKU and #201 gets their order fulfilled first :mad:...

As long as I get my (and everyone else too) ipad2 soon I'll be ok.
 
My exchange with B&H today via chat

So I had a chat session with B&H just now and got a "place in line" status update for the first time. I think the CSR looked it up for me because I called him out on the attitude with me since he thought I had called in earlier for status on the same order. Here is the exchange. It looks like they CAN tell you where you are in line. Either that or he made it up and said I would be in the same position if I went to J&R.

T Strong : Any new shipments come in today for IPad2?
Shneur O: Hello T Strong. My name is Shneur, and I will be glad to assist you. Please give me a few moments to begin working on your inquiry.
Shneur O: sorry, no they have not. I see that you called about this 3 hours ago.

T Strong: I called to confirm that the shipment would go out and not wait for the cover. Is that an issue that I called earlier?
Shneur O: I am sorry, you asked about the cover earlier. I thought you asked about the Ipad and you were asking again about this item

T Strong: I know you guys are getting a lot of calls but you also have my money already so if I call or send a chat a couple of times a day then that is the price that your company pays for taking the money up front in my opinion

Is there any way you can give me an approximation of where my place in line is on this order? It is for a less popular model (Verizon, 32 Gig) so I would hope that my order from 3/15 would be close to the top of the list at this time.

my black wifi 16gb ordered on 3/21 shipped today with 2 day air...saddly it's the weekend so my 2 day air went to waste and i won't be getting it until monday. but at least its better than ordering it on the apple website. :D
 
The overnight shipping paid off! Currently typing this from my iPad 2 I received this morning!

I don't personally see that the person on the B&H side of that chat did anything wrong. He just let you know that they do track contact, which I think is a good thing.
 
Ordered Black 32gb Wifi 3/14, will be delivered 3/28. Much better than ordering from apple (longer shipping, and adds tax), or waiting in line. Some very lovely jews working at that store.

The little bit of sniping was not really the point of why I posted this. I just wanted everyone to know that the ability to tell where you are in the que is there if you push a bit. It is all good. I will have mine tomorrow via overnight I think they got a good size shipment in today of the Verizon versions since I have seen a number of others have posted that they were being shipped as well.

In hindsight, I think that they did a good job with an impossible situation. My only suggestion to them would be to communicate the que status and announce when shipments do come in so that we don't feel so "in the dark" while we wait. I am sure they are trying not to lose orders from discouraged customers who see that they are way down the list though. Perhaps a daily status the lists the number of units received in each SKU on a daily basis? Just a thought.

I am a happy customer.
 
FYI..... All sizes of Verizon black are in stock at this moment.

This seems to be correct. I ordered a 64gb Wifi+3G Verizon, Black ipad2 from B&H, on Tuesday, 03/22/2011, at about 11:00 am, PST. At some point this afternoon (03/24/2011) the order status changed from "Backordered" to "In stock, order sent to warehouse". Only two days! I had expected a much longer wait. Hopefully, it will arrive by 2nd day air early next week. Thanks to all for the very useful posts.

Other options

I've been following this post with bated breath, trying to get my hands on a 32GB black wifi only model ASAP. I had an order with Apple that was gonna take 4-5 weeks and I tried to call my local Apple/Best Buy/Target every day to check for shipments... NO LUCK!!

Then I came across a website that can somehow check the inventory of Target stores. I checked on Monday night and saw that there were a few available at a store near me. Sure enough, I called the next morning right at opening and they had them! I got in my car and raced down there and I'm proud to say that I am typing this message from my brand new iPad 2.

It's not 100% (the sizes and colors may be off) but all of the stores that supposedly had inventory did. Here's the site in case you want to give it a shot:

I hope by next week some AT&T models will start shipping out, kinda jealous of you Verizon customers right now.

I know what you mean. I never considered being with Verizon to be much of an advantage. And now that AT&T is in the process of buying T-Mobile, many of their customers may jump in as well. This could make things even more difficult. In any event, I hope that yours ships quickly.
 
I'm gonna try a local best buy tomorrow. Don't know how much longer I can go! Patience has never been my strong suit.
