does anyone know if the online pre-order will start for Canada on the 11th as well? I know we aren't getting the iPad until the 25th but I'm just wondering if anyone has heard when the pre-ordering will start

It would be unkind to mention the 15% flat tax system....! ;)
Sigh, if only Cathay would open hiring again... ;)
Yeh, ask him about the price for housing there
I have a cousin in law that lives in Sai Wan Ho, sadly I know. But I digress...

If people think it's too much for data, don't pay for it!!! If you keep forking over wads of cash while saying "this is ridiculous" the price will look right to Ma Bell and Verizon.

I'm planning on buying mine at the Apple store this Friday. Trying to decide how early to get there. Was thinking 3:00, but that may not be early enough. Any thoughts?

Anyone know if Apple has ever released numbers of how many iPads with WiFi vs. iPads with WiFi+3G were sold over the last year? Just curious. 3G prices seems so crazy expensive especially if you already own a smartphone. You really shouldn't have to pay per device. One fee to access the network should really suffice. Can you imagine if you had to pay for each device you had at home? One fee each for your laptop, desktop, game console, DVR, Blu-Ray Player with downloadable content, VOIP service telephone, etc... Hotspots are the way to go, but should simply be included in your data plan. Not an additional fee.

I am also trying to decide whether to fight the lines on Friday or order online. I've never waited in line for an apple product, just ordered online or waited until weeks later. I'll probably be finished at work by noon and go check the lines then. Does anyone know how long it takes them to replenish their stock at the Apple stores once they sell out? I'm sure it's different with each store.

According to PCmag, about 50% of all iPads sold are wifi only, however this is neither here nor there. Apple doesn't release the numbers. I suspect, like the iPhone, the vast majority of people buys the 16GB version i.e. the Wifi only model. source below

BTW, I noticed when you join circa 2003. I beat you by two years albeit by a different user name. Dear god, I'm old.

Is it really the end of the world if you don't get it the first day? You can order it online Friday and probably get it Monday or Tuesday.

About the 2GB for $25 deal, is it $25 for 2GB and you don't have to pay until you run out of data? So could you potentially pay once every few months as long as the 3G usage stays low?

RE: in person sales to avoid overseas cannibal sales

I think the CDMA iphone launch was a bit less demand than usual because the phones only work in the US. When you have a GSM version, then all the overseas markets that are compatible but not yet released have third party middle men trying to buy up stock to sell at a premium overseas.

This is why the iPad 2 is being sold in person for 2 weeks before it is sold overseas, they don't want the two weeks worth of iPads to displace local purchasers with fraudulent registrations etc. When the iPad launches legitimately overseas, the official channel for distribution will get more of the sales.

That would make sense, but alas no. You have to use all your data in the month of purchase or you lose it. Nothing like roll over data, at least not yet.

What I find funny is that Att whines about it's network being too congested, yet it's policies are made to encourage users to overtax the system. If you wanted to keep usage down, you should sell data like food; where you can by so much in advance and use it at your rate until it runs out. Now you have to use it or lose it, kind of like an all-you-can-eat special, which encourages overuse.

For some reason, I'd never actually grasped how expensive mobile data is for you guys in the States… USD10/Gb? Wow. I'm typing this on a MacBook with a 3G dongle that's costing me GBP1/Gb (that's a little over a buck and a half).

I know US Governments are generally less inclined to regulation than their European counterparts, but it looks a lot like your mobile telcos are screwing their customers from where I'm sitting.

Cheers

Which iPad 3G version should I buy if I want to use my T-Mobile data?

I probably wouldn't be able to use T-Mobile 3G, but edge would probably still work?

The cost of 3G data is absurd. Its better to just use it in wifi.

If I want a data plan on 3G, I'd rather get a mifi that I could use with any of my devices, not just one.

Clearwire has unlimited 4G for $45 per month. The only problem is they aren't everywhere yet. You also have to get one of their portable wireless routers (about $5 per month rental).

Wow the prices are absurd! It's even more than the phone data prices.

Tell me about ... I get 40 channels digital TV over the air for ~14 bucks and since i renewd my actually unlimited 3G internet contract they even reduced the price, so i pay ~15 for that too. All in all 30 bucks for everything.

Ok it's actually 10 GB a month from 8 in the morning till midnight and from midnight till 8 it's very much unlimited (speed and data), but in years i have been using this plan if you don't push it too much it's unlimited 24/7/365. I can use up to 50-60 GB a month during tha day and another 200 GB during the night and they only limit the speed (only at day) if they think i used too much, but that never happened in 4 years. And i get maximum bars even in the woods :D

They (AT&T and Verizon) are both ripping off people with these data cost.

Why Apple did not add a World GSM/CDMA chip to the iPad 2 is beyond me, it would have been a true win for us consumers in the US, Canada and other CDMA regions.

It would have been nice and businesses would probably love it.

But I can think of two reasons

1. Licensing might be a bigger bag of hurt than Blu-ray. especially costs

2. battery. last I checked, dual chips are fairly new. which means that they could be immature. Apple isn't going to mess with that 'up to 10 hours' of theirs. Even if they put in two chips there could be battery issues.

As much as it sucks to wait, I suspect that they are already investigating a possible tri chip for both the ipad and iphone for 2012. Along with that whole 'software sim' that is in the rumors.

I have a question for you Brits. What happens when you go to another country? For example, if you go to France or Germany, is there a special data rate?

While its hard to argue we are overcharged here; we do enjoy a pretty large range relative to the coverage in England. The UK, including England, is 93,000 square miles, our biggest state Alaska is ~ 650,000 square miles. Sure, this may be an extreme example, but your entire county is about the size of one of our medium sized states. Michigan, for example, is bigger than the whole UK.

I don’t know what the policy is, which is why I asked at the start of this. All I know is I can use the same data plan from the middle of the Pacific ocean, to the Arctic, to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and not have any special data rates for doing so. Is your default coverage that expansive?

AT&T Unlimited Plans Are Transferable From Old iPad Account To The New iPad 2

Just wondering...can you transfer your unlmited to you ipad2 just by swapping the sim?
No need. I called them last week to ask about this and they said to just call them - free anytime 611 on iPhones - enter your iPad's phone number to get transferred directly to the iPad department where they will move your grandfathered $30 a month unlimited account to your new iPad 2. Easy Peezy. :)

I would not have made the comment, if it were not for one thing.... the Verizon iPhone.

This phone contains a Qualcomm MDM6600 radio, which can do CDMA and GSM. They have already licensed a CDMA/GSM chip that could have been used to make it into a 'world tablet', so no to point 1. They use a dual CDMA/GSM chip in the Verizon iPhone now, so no to point 2.

I suspect the reason has to do with the motivation for most things - MONEY. ATT and Verizon would not like a device where a customer could easily tell them where to shove their data plan and easily change over to the other guy. These guys LOVE locked in models, and Apple gave them just that with the artificial split between a Verizon iPad and a ATT iPad.

40GB/month is the reason why carriers are going to be moving away from unlimited data...

Which is why it's the duty of those with unlimited data to use it to it's maximum. This way, they will increase capacity sooner and return to the unlimited plans from before when they have built up the capacity to do so. Once they do, then we can reduce usage to something less.

I'd like to see AT&T allow somebody to use 40GB a month on their network...

"Unlimited" data has never really meant "unlimited" and even when AT&T offered unlimited plans to data connect cards, they still reserved the right to suspend your service if your data usage was excessive.

AT&T has always enforced a 5GB cap on their plans...

It is slightly different now with AT&T usually charging $10 each additional GB, but I just don't see them just allowing somebody to use 40GB without suspension.

I've seen hundreds of customer's bills while working as a CSR and 99% of people don't even come close to 2GB a month let alone 40GB... Those that are in excess of 5GB are notified and usually are suspended shortly after...

finally ... a half-decent plan for you Americans. the iPad isn't locked to one carrier and you can get it without a long-term contract.

postpaid isn't as nice as prepaid ... but you're almost there.

i find it somewhat ironic that Apple (usually quite controlling) is forcing the mobile market to offer other options. however, it would be nice if similar unlocked/uncontracted versions of the iP3/4/5 would be available to you.

also, it's still too bad that apple doesn't employ 4G/LTE :( that's my biggest gripe with the company (and the absence of at least 3G+/turbo in the MBA).

How would a hybrid phone help with the service plans? ATT and VZN are the gov't backed monopolies for GSM and CDMA, respectively. Having a hybrid wireless chip is not going to change that. What we need is for Apple to make the damn products available for Sprint and T-Mo, as well. It seems likely that ATT and VZN are paying Apple extra cash to make sure that it doesn't happen.

It won't happen because Apple will most likely have to make a third version of the iPad just for T-Mobile, since they don't use the same band for 3G that AT&T does. Unless, of course, there's already a chipset that can handle both AT&T and T-Mobile and the rest of the world.
