this info

1) will ensure I never wind up with Verizon-based Apple product

and

2) if I do get an iPad in the coming weeks, I'll stick with my original plan for Wifi only. We have it at work now and at home, so I'm set. That list is a sobering reality, and making me think I already have the best option with my unlimited iPhone service.

It really pisses me off they aren't doing online pre-orders. I HATE dealing with the asshats at the Apple store. Does anyone know if Best Buy will be having them on the 11th and what their plans are? I was surprised to not see it in this weeks Best Buy ad.

I believe that Target and Walmart will also be offering the ipad for sale on launch day.

Will there be an option for 1-day shipping? And that would cost like... $50? I'm debating on wether I should go to the store.. or save gas and order online..

For the person in Hong Kong who said they only pay $6.50 a month for their iPad data plan....isn't HK covered in wifi? I thought it was. I know Taiwan is. I lived there, and got free wifi almost everywhere on the island. If so, why would you even need the 3G version? Aside from the GPS chip, Wifi is so much faster.

I knew this would happen. I said, "wait and see. You think At&t is bad, wait til Verizon enters the fray and they won't be such a mythical white horse anymore."

They (AT&T and Verizon) are both ripping off people with these data cost.

Why Apple did not add a World GSM/CDMA chip to the iPad 2 is beyond me, it would have been a true win for us consumers in the US, Canada and other CDMA regions.

Because its not about doing something for the customer but to maximized profit for the highwaymen from the carriers.

What is outright stupid is that customers paying in advance get even punished for being reliable and giving money in advance to ATT as the rate for going over the plane is more...

Ditto, word for word.

No one should ever be paying that much for wireless data. If it were 4G, it would still be obscene, but instead it's a max of 1.5 mb from Verizon! That's disgusting!

+1 and very bad PR planning by apple, a company which promotes online
then tricks us to do go in line and wait ...
I am sure this will come as shocking news to you, but it is not actually mission critical you get the device on the first day.

By ordering as 12:01 or later online and given the massive and efficient supply chain operation they have, it is quite likely it will ship within a couple of hours of your order and be in your hands in a day or two. Some folks may actually be close enough to a distribution hub to get theirs day one.

Order online for goodness sake. Let the folks who go for the experience itself stand in line.

Less whining all around.

Does anyone know if Best Buy will have the white iPads on Friday?

The iPad is data hungry device. Realistically, a single two hour during off peak hours will take ~600 MB of data and ~400 MB on peak hours. Add to this basic web stuff, like checking email, the occasional YouTube video, streaming radio (iHeart, Pandora, ect...) and you are looking at 6 - 10 GB per month when not on Wi-Fi. Steve Jobs was right when he introduced the original iPad 3G last year; the unlimited plan they were offering (for 41 days) was an outstanding deal.

I am grandfathered in...so I get unlimited ATT 3G data.

While its hard to argue we are overcharged here; we do enjoy a pretty large range relative to the coverage in England. The UK, including England, is 93,000 square miles, our biggest state Alaska is ~ 650,000 square miles. Sure, this may be an extreme example, but your entire county is about the size of one of our medium sized states. Michigan, for example, is bigger than the whole UK.

I agree with your point, in general, although I suspect that you have never actually tried to use a cell phone in Alaska - there's basically no coverage in 95% of the state. And it's only within the past year or so that AT&T has had any service in Montana. But WRT larger cities in the US, your point stands.

I don't understand why anyone would pay for 3g! If it was able to do 4g maybe but 3g!?

Not to mention if you really need a connection away from wifi why don't you just tether it off of the cell phone you already have a data plan on?

Then you are able to save the 130 bucks when you buy it and then the monthly rate! :D

3G data on non-smartphone devices is still in the mostly business user stage, which means that the prices are a rip off. in a few years it will filter to the consumer market and they will lump this under your regular smartphone plan

and they are pricing this high to get the serial video/bit torrent streamers off the network

You just explained why I'm going to buy the "Wi-Fi Only" model.

Because I can't add tethering to my unlimited plan and I dontwant to have 2 devices to charge. I would rather have my iPad be self sufficient

Are these expected to sell out on day one or should I be able to walk into an Apple store on Saturday and pick one up?

From past experience: is it possible to order online for pickup in store? I'm not going in line to buy one and would be happy to go to the store Saturday morning and pick one up - just would like to order it already early Friday morning so that I know there is one waiting for me ....

Order Online / Wait In-Line

Anybody else ordering online and still taking a shot at picking one up in store?
I have a bunch of Apple giftcards, so I'm thinking of waiting in line to see if they'll have them, then ordering online if they don't.

damn what a rip off i am soooooo glad i have my unlimited plan on my iphone which i tether my ipad to......lol

Here's a fun fact...

Netflix uses about 145MB of bandwidth per half hour to stream on the iPad 3G (Source). So you'll be lucky if you can get 7 hours of streaming content on a 3G iPad under the 2GB plan. For $25 + $8 for Netflix, you are paying $33 to stream maybe 4 to 5 movies to your device. Of course the price goes down with more use, but that's beside the point.

You could rent or even BUY the same media from the iTunes store for MUCH cheaper.

These pricing plans are ridiculous if you plan on doing any sort of streaming. I can't even imagine how much it would cost to stream an entire baseball game with MLB At Bat.
