I call BS - if they are listing obviously fake white iPads on their site, they're probably just listing parts that don't exist to drive traffic to their website.

Page 2, please.

Anyone else agree that this would be one sexy iPad design?

Imagine it in black.

It's just a big ass iPod touch. /s

Apple is becoming more aggressive with updates, which is always fun to watch. I'm also getting pumped for gen. 2, but I'm trying not too cause I read somewhere on here to try and not take any expectations into an apple keynote, because most of the time you will be rather disappointed.

iPad has plenty of unused space inside, so adding more battery to compensate wouldn't be a problem.

Also, Apple's advertised 10 hours of battery life has been found to be an underestimate by everyone I've seen reporting on it. If this high-resolution screen comes to fruition, despite the battery life possibly decreasing alongside it, Apple can still say the iPad gets those same 10 hours.

Based on that language, it is not a given that 4.3 will be free. And 5.0 will certainly not be.

I read this as 4.3 will be free, and so will be 4.4, 4.5 and so on. However, Apple doesn't guarantee that in three years time, iOS 4.7 on the original iPad will contain all the features of iOS 4.7 on the iPad 4 that gets released, for example if those features need new hardware.

Why does Apple have to wait until April to release an already ready-to-ship product???

Ahhhh.... just as reminder... all this stuff is just rumors. No one here really knows... or if they do, they can't say for real.

I would expect that when it's announced you'll see a release date very quickly thereafter. Sales of current models will stall and Apple can't have that happen.

Given all the rumors and parts pics I think it's all sooner than we think. I'm guessing the end of this month, or first couple weeks of Feb. We'll know more the end of this week I think. Financial report out tomorrow... MacWorld coming.

There won't be an iOS 4.4, 4.5 or 4.7 it will go from iOS 4.3 to iOS 5.

Man Oh Man, am I glad to have waited for the next Gen iPad! Seriously though, its great to see all signs pointing to a very competitive and robust refresh...

The iPad with it's updated GPU should have no problems running a 2048x1536 display.

2048x1536 = 3.1 millions pixels.

Updating a screen is largely an issue of fillrate and memory to store fast access to image data/textures and screen buffers. The new GPU (according to Imagination Technology's spec page) can process 35 million polygons/sec and has a 1 Gigapixel/second fillrate. That's means it can draw the whole 2048x1536 screen roughly 300 times a second (under ideal conditions, ie zero overdraw) 1 Gigapixel is 1,000,000,000 (one thousand million) pixels per second.

Memory requirements are a bit different because of the way graphics technology works. There are usually two or more buffers in VRAM (shared system RAM in the case of iOS devices) and the display is rendered into an off screen buffer then the buffer is flipped (usually just a pointer in RAM to the start of the buffer) making the off-screen buffer the "live" source that's sent to the display as the previous buffer is now used for rendering then flipped back again and so forth. Buffers are usually flipped in time with the display clock setting, I believe the iPad is 60hz?... Anyway, there's often a third buffer used to prevent "screen tearing" artefacts in case the machine is in the middle of drawing an update to the buffer as it's flipped. This is known as double buffering (one live source for display, one buffer for rendering and and 2nd buffer that is always completed waiting for the next display flip).

Each buffer needs to store 2048 x 1536 x 32 bits of information (32 bit colour depth). Multiply that out then divide by 8 and we have the amount of system RAM needed for each buffer, which about 12 MB per buffer (yep, that's all). If the iPad 2 has 1GB of system RAM then it might need to reserve maybe a quarter/256MB for a 2048 x 1536 display - that's much higher than 3x12MB because I'm making very rough and probably way too large a guess about the overdraw and needed texture memory for the iOS UI at that resolution. Regardless that still leaves plenty available for other system functions, apps and so on.

I don't know why anyone is saying stuff like "that's just too high a resolution to be possible" ect. It's not only possible, it's quite easy. Hell it's even possible with the current iPad GPU although you'd have bugger all memory left for apps and you'd run out of memory ridiculously fast trying to do any real-time 3D rendering but you could drive a simple double buffered 2048 x 1536 display in 2D with the current iPad.

However, it's not all rose tinted sun glasses. If this rumour is true 3D performance at the native resolution will defiantly decrease. For 3D games that need blistering performance developers will need to drop back to the iPad 1 resolution. 1024x768+Pixel-doubling+AA will likely equal current iPad GPU speeds and should provide adequate retina-fooling image quality for real-time 3D on a 10" display.

so the new iPad 2 will have:

front camera
back camera
HDMI
att and verizon
high res screen
vibration motor
sd card slot
usb connector
no home button
new gestures
a5 dual core cpu
dual core GPU
better speaker
smaller becel
flat back
512 MB ram or more
128GB
price goes down by $100

did I miss anything? sounds like a compilation of all wishlists on this forum:rolleyes:

very good point. here are my thoughts...

front camera: certainly
back camera: maybe
HDMI: likely through a dock-pin adapter (similar to all other forms of video output from iPad)
att + verizon: certainly
high res screen: hopefully
vibration motor: sure -- for games (and should be a cheap add-on)
sd card slot: maybe, but only for photo upload, not expansion -- apple does not do upgradeable memory
usb connector: nope -- only via a dock-pin adaptor which satisfies the EU charging requirements (if any for iPad)
no home button -- maybe to save costs, but I think Gruber is right about this being needed for newbie intuitive use
new gestures -- certainly
a5 dual core cpu - hopefully (i think apple needs to do this to fully distance themselves from coming competition)
dual core GPU -- if high res display comes to fruition, and it is required for that display, otherwise no way
better speaker - sure, but i am indifferent
smaller bezel - maybe to save material costs or on the whim of jon ives, but i am indifferent
flat back - sure
512 MB ram or more - 512MB for sure, hopefully more, but more means newer apps run sluggish on iPad-1 very soon
128GB - no, max storage will likely stay maxed out at 64GB for now, flash storage is way too pricey
price goes down by $100 -- no way

disclaimer: i have been wrong before once or twice ;)

...

but can it be jailbroken? The previous jailbreak used a vulnerability in the A4 chip, now that A4 is gone surely Apple will have patched the hole

Maybe the SD card slot will be for expansion...maybe that is how Apple will keep prices down, include all models with 4gb of memory with the ability to expand on that after the fact using your own cards. They can put in a higher res display and all those extra goodies and chop the cost if they drop internal flash

Breaking news is that Steve jobs is taking medical leave from Apple, Macrumors will catch up with the story soon I would imagine.

Get well soon Mr Jobs

Why does Apple have to wait until April to release an already ready-to-ship product?

Because, being a radio device (WiFi & 3G & whatever else...hey, I'll start the 4G rumor right here), they have to notify the FCC with 30 or 90 days notice for regulatory review - which, being a public process, means they go with the full-on announcement ending with "...and it will be available in 3 months." Remember when the iPad was first announced? drove us crazy waiting for actual release. They can't release it until it's approved, and they can't submit it for approval until it's ready-to-ship.

Boy, I'm glad I didn't buy 1st Gen! LOL!

Yeah me too.... I'm also laughing at all those folks who purchased 2D televisions too. I held out for the 3D televisions for decades instead of wasting my money on a 2D model, and now the 3D televisions are here!!!! But I'm not jumping on those just yet, I am waiting for the models that do 3D without using special glasses. I'm not going to be a sucker for these technology companies always trying to get us to buy today's technology when I can wait and get something better tomorrow.

so all the women out there that hated the name iPad may actually buy one now that it has a vibrating motor. :)

I heard the Revision 3 comes with a 9" joystick.

I dont get why some iPad 1 owners seem to enjoy making fun of those who are waiting for iPad 2? I think many of those who are waiting for gen2 are just excited at thought of owning their first iPad that comes with features they have been wishing for. Why the negativity? Is it jealousy?
