iPad 3 definitely. Sounds like from the deals referred to in the call, this was the deals for screen display production R&D/facilities/cost of manufacturing they'd worked out with several manufacturers. The estimates of when these being built factories would be in production pointed to next year potentially for iPad 3.
It'd be great if they could do a higher end iPad resolution, and i'm sure they can get a decent price for the screen (it being one of the largest costs for production of the iPad).

Till then - why couldn't Apple actually allow video out to be at 2x the resolution? I.e. developers work to get 2x media, apps etc, and so if the iPad is hooked up to a monitor / projector with the resolution, able to project at 1080p/2x current resolution.
Why would Apple want to cap the output video to <720p? Seems crazy. So that A5 could help video out, at a higher resolution than the actual screen currently/in iPad 2 could do.
Would mean that you could presumably also store/watch 1080p content (downscaled) on iPad.

All rumors taken together, I'm unfortunately starting to lean towards a "misunderstood source" explanation. Both claim having sources at the Apple campus, and I believe the source(s) at Apple could still be correct. Someone may have told that "a future iPad will have a higher resolution display", with one guy extrapolating that into "The iPad 2 will have a Retina display!!" (I would definitely not be surprised if especially a journalist does that) and another "It may happen some day, but maybe not in the iPad 2".

This is basically the problem with rumors... :( Heck, the Apple source/sources may not even have direct access to the devices themselves and have only told reporters what they've been told, so that we're seeing a chain of at least three persons here.

It won't be a retina display...

...but it will have a higher resolution screen.

I also thought about a pixel-doubled display being a bto option.

At the very least, I'd like to see some enhanced resolution.

I would expect that Apple wants to wait until the first wave of Android-based tablets is released, and then release a new iPad that makes them look like yesterday's news. I would also expect Apple to have a seven inch iPad as close as ready as possible, which would go on sale _if_ seven inch tablets sell in meaningful numbers but not otherwise.
I agree. Rather than play catchup (which Apple are making other manufacturers doing this year), they'll bring out the much more superior product in 2012. I think this will be the same with the iPhone 4 being released as a 4S (minor improvements across all the specs) this year. 2012 can sport a redesign iPhone and high-end iPad 3.

The resolution being rumoured is dreamland tech for the mass market. Too expensive still to produce on the mass-scale without making a loss if the products price stayed the same. No doubt (as reported) there are prototypes with all sorts of designs and configurations are being played with at Apple HQ.

I wouldn't be surprised if the iPad was kept in 16/32GB form at a cheaper price and we see the iPad2 as 32/64/128GB combos at release. This will still give other manufacturers a battle as there's still a lot in the original iPad people can gain from.

Good, keep the resolution at 1024. No need to go through the pain of waiting weeks or months for apps to update to support the high rez, all the while looking crappy until they do. At least for another year.

They have to do something big to counter the incoming Honeycomb Tegra tablets coming out soon. The xoom looks incredible and might be the tablet I get unless Apple make one with matching price and specifications.

Key word is MOBILE. What's the whole point then.

Not seeing where making the iPad thinner or last longer necessarily makes it more mobile. Beyond a certain point of diminishing returns anyway. The next iPad will probably be slightly thinner and last slightly longer, probably not going to be substantial.

HUGE disappointment if the reported high resolution screen is not on iPad 2.

After the announcement, surely? Launch day sales are almost always very strong!

I have trouble understanding people's idea of when to buy stock. The best time to buy stock is always right now. If you plan on selling the stock in the near future you shouldn't bother with Apple stock. Plus it doesn't pay dividends, so the stock is really best to think as long term investments.

Higher Resolution would be fantastic, but if i had to choose between that and raw speed i'd choose the latter... If the iPad 2 has a seriously beefed up GPU, more RAM and faster CPU i might stlll be in the market for one when the time comes....

For my 2p.. I think, as others have said in this thread, if apple really want to stay ahead of the game, they'll pull out all the stops and double the resolution; that will really nail it as number one without any competition....
I don't think double res it's quite as far fetched as gruber seems to suggest; he uses the example of the resolution being akin to a 27" monitor as a reason for it being unlikley; i don't agree, the same argument could be made against the iPhone 4 as it's resolution is pretty similar to that of my old 17" monitor... At the end of the day, if apple can put a screen with a higher ppi (pixels-per-inch) in a tiny phone, they can put a screen with a lower ppi in the iPad2... As far as RAM is concerned; a 2560 x 1546 32-bit screen (it probably isn't 32bit but let's just go with the max), is only 15mb in size... ok, you have to factor in textures for games, but if they put 512mb RAM in that should be enough... Another thing to consider, the iPhone4 doubled the 3GS's screen resolution and doubled the RAM to compensate, i know double resolution is 4 x the RAM, but the iPhone4 seemed to cope just fine with just double RAM.

If they decide to not include a higher resolution display, I don't think for a second this will be a technical issue, i think this will either be a strategic product decision or a financial one, i.e. will Apple decide to do their usual slow drip-feeding of tech updates or will the extra screen dig too deeply into their profit margins... The answers to those 2 questions alone will, i think, decide if Apple doubles the screen in the iPad2.

Be interesting to see how it pans out... :)

Ridiculous, I say. I believe it absolutely will, SGX543 drivers and 2x images in the iBooks app is enough for me to believe it.

I think it was meant as a joke :D

But they wouldn't look crappy; they'd look exactly as they do now (1024 x 768), they would only "look crappy" when compared with the newer apps coming on stream...
Also, this would happen no matter when they did it, now or in another years time
Also, "pain of waiting weeks or months for apps to update" WFT - Surely, pain is not really the right word to describe waiting for all your apps to be updated for you, for free, where you have to do nothing but click an "update" button once a week?

SGX543 drivers are only evidence of the A5 SoC with an upgraded CPU and GPU which is to be completely expected.

But why higher resolution images in the iBooks app? Seems odd to worry about that over a year in advance (if the rumors don't pan out). But then, I guess it's possible they are testing some "iPad 3" units internally and it was no big deal to stick an additional .png in there.

Raw speed? What exactly is it you do with your iPad that you need a faster processor for?! Regarding RAM, yes more would obviously be nice but this (and upgraded CPU) are guaranteed to be in iPad2 simply because of how technology marches on. The higher-resolution, which is clearly only a maybe at the moment, is much more essential because it will allow the iPad to compete against the Kindle as a proper e-reader.

From a Dev's and Apple's point of view, it makes sense all round to get this doubled display up and running as soon as possible.

We will have 1 years worth of iPad apps written for 1024x768, some of which may be converted to a higher resolution.

Do you really want to wait till there is more than double the amount of iPad apps all designed for 1024x768 before you make the change.

Minimise the damage? and make the change asap I'd say.

Also for Apple, once it's done, it's done. they won't have to think about the display for another 10 years probably, over that time they can just keep raming up the speed and battery life on all the future models year on year. Rather than having the screen upgrade always hanging over them.

As I said before, take a profit's hit, kill the competition and fit it now. Get it over with, and you will dominate the high end Tablet market for a long time to come.

Don't wait and see your marketshare fall to others before you do anything.

I was thinking of Gaming when i said that... Totally appreciate your point about the resolution allowing the iPad to compete against e-readers... In fact, since my post, the more i think about it (reading books, browsing, HD movies), the more i'm thinking of reasons why i would want a higher resolution display so i'm beginning to agree with you on this!! The higher res on the iPhone 4 transformed the iPhone completely... ;)

Maybe it is my 49 year old eyes but how much resolution do we need? Photos look great on my current iPad and I don't see (pun intended) how increased pixel count would make much difference. Though I must confess I haven't seen the iPhone's 4 display.

No better display then I will hold off for iPad 3. It's not like I need an iPad that bad anyways. The better resolution would have been nice though. I would've preordered that.

Then you are really not qualified to make that comment (no offence!) :D

Is it really worth a new headline whenever someone thinks loud? I like if rumors based on some tiny fact or evidence that lead to speculation. But just based on thinking out loud? Someone thinks about how a case for the new iPad could look like - boom, headline - another guy thinks about how a case could look like and makes even a model - boom, headline - someone thinks it won't have high resolution - boom headline. .... please. I know, rumors are not fact, but they should have there roots on some creditable findings (and no, thinking is just thinking)
