My theory was that they had still too many iPad 1s left and to facilitate selling them, they delayed the pre-order of the iPad 2 (and reduced the price of the iPad 1, a real first, Apple previously had never reduced prices to clear out old product if at all, they did it via the refurb store).

So I called my apple store and they said the line outside wasnt very big (although by 5 im sure it will be), they had tons, and in his guess, theyd still have them tomorrow... doesnt seem like he was pushing me to get in line, if anything the opposite.
So if the analysts are correct, preorders of 600,000 x a minimum $500 per unit = around $300million made.

Is it really crazy in stores? Never been to an apple store or best buy for this. Going to be my 1st iPad and therefore asking. Dont mind standing for 30 min but no more. Considering best buy due to reward zone and better warranty. Any experiences with 1st day launch folks?

That's lame that new orders now will take weeks and they started ahead of time. Keep your word Apple.
I guess I will have to endure the retail stores if I want it early. I guess that's what Apple wants anyway. That infamous mayhem at their stores.

It has, it really has. Below are two screen shots from cnn.com. One is from April 3rd 2010, the day the iPad 1 was released. The other is from today. Before, the iPad 1 was a banner headline. Today, its a small link in the middle of a bunch of other news.

I bought my iPad on Wifi iPad launch day at the retail store in Seattle's University Village mall. I arrived about 7am for a 9am door-opening. Line was well managed and behaved, there was some coffee and small snacks for those waiting. Once inside, each person got their own salesperson assigned who could provide a demo (I didn't need one - I was already sold), determine the model, and try and sell you accessories and AppleCare.
I was in and out of the store in 15-20 minutes.
I am not a "line" or "crowd" person, but I found the whole thing fairly painless, if a bit overblown.
Damn...looks like im gonna try to go get one today instead of ordering. I wasn't gonna stay up all night just to order online...just silly.

Same thing happened when the iPhone 4 was released in the States. The other countries got there's on time.
iPad 2 worldwide release will be on the 25th.
Or you could order one online then and then pop into a store today. If you get one you can always cancel the online order because they only charge you once it's shipped.
I could've done that, but even though they only charge you when it ships. They still authorize for the full amount as soon as you order online. So basically would show as 2 full charges for the next 3 days.
Don't you suppose that it's not going to make as big a splash in the news this time around because it's just like a .1 release? Last time it was Apple's first tablet computer, but now it's just another tablet.
