Apple is playing you like a fiddle. You are doing exactly what Apple wants, going to the store to make a line and increase hype in the media. How sad.

Just remember as you stand in line, you are spending hours of your life in service to the Apple hype machine.

Pity, a true pity.

So? Apple is acting no different than every other business out there...trying to get buzz for a product launch. Marketing/PR budgets are huge for a reason.

Why would anyone have an issue with that unless they are some kind of anti-Apple nutjob? Now that is pitiful.

Nope 18.

18 models? Don't you mean 12?

Unless you're including the original models, I didn't think they were still on sale in the US.

There's 18 models. You have 3 sizes x 2 colors x 3 connectivity options (WiFi, ATT 3G, Verizon 3G). 3 x 2 x 3 = 18.

I'm glad somebody else caught onto the fact that there are 3 connectivty types (WiFi-only, ATT WiFi+3G, or Verizon WiFi+3G). What is funny is one only need look at the order page to see 3 groups of 6 models.

Ironically, everybody always says Apple is overpriced and offers you no options. This does not apply to the iPad. It has an incredible price in the tablet market and gives you 18 choices. Much better than Moto is currently offering on the Xoom with one high price, 1 color, 1 capacity, 1 carrier, no WiFi-only option (yet). The typical Apple complaints don't seem to apply to iPad. You can still complain about the ability to "trick" it out like Android. But it all depends if you want to buy something you just use or something you want to tinker with and customize. Apple is foregoing that latter market while still giving the former market the kind of options they are looking for.

BTW... they also offer 10 options of smart covers (2 materials x 5 colors each) with a total of 9 distinct colors since (since two are black) -- or 8 if you think those grey colors are close enough to count as one.

Are we sure the ATT and Verizon models are not the same? My order lists it as simply 3G without specifying ATT or Verizon. I know Apples website lists them separately but maybe that is for data purposes. The chip is a hybrid GSM/CDMA and I would assume the iPhone 5 is likely to be the same for both Verizon and ATT so why not the iPad 2?

I know its only noon here in NY but the weather is clear and relatively warm and there are less than 50 people at the flagship 5th Ave store.

This 2-3 weeks ship time was total BS. More Apple messing with its loyal first adopters. Prob will swing by tonight and grab one and cancel online order.

I'm in line now at the Cherryhill Mall in NJ
So far the line has about 20 people in it including me. I suspect more will come sometime after lunch, or I could be wrong! Only time will tell.

Mine ships in 3-5 business days and will arrive between March 18-25. My smartcover says ships in 1-2 business days and arrives between March 15-18. Either way, neither one has shipped and they already fully charged me in two separate transactions...

Thanks,
WOW that's long time. I guess I will need to go to the lines. Damn....
I need it before March 21 because i am leaving on a trip. Bummer..hate those lines and the mayhem.

what a jerk what ? Because japan got hit by an earthquake, nothing else happened today ?

Really, if the news media wants to actually report news instead of generating revenue, then they will cover everything that went down today, including developments in libya, the japan earthquake, the ipad 2 launch and that kitten that got saved in the tree by the local firemen.

There's nothing jerky about wanting balanced news reporting instead of just "we go now live to our 24 hours of coverage of the japan bomb!" with basically no new information for hours on end and just "images" going by...

winning.

I heard the Samsung Galaxy tab may has sold 2 million so far. Maybe not. They shipped them anyway. Now Samsung is rethinking the second version.

Anyone going to stand in line today at an Apple Store? If so, how early are you going?

Already here!

Funny. At 5:30 I am going to walk in and walk out shortly thereafter with a number of iPads. No line for me! :apple:

For a small fee, I'm having my hand delivered later tonight. ;)

First time waiting in line for something this so your probably right!

iPad 2 probably won't be as bad since it's being offered at so many different outlets... but then again, there were no pre-orders... so who knows?

Oh you elitist buyers with your stand-in-line-for-you-slaves! :p
Seriously, Im super stoked to get my first iPad:) I hope all the MR members dont walk away disappointed this afternoon:) God Bless YO! And GL HF :D

I paid someone to stand in line for me. Money talks! haha

Relax. It's not like camping out for a week (which is fine if that "floats someones's boat". So what if someone wants to go to Best Buy, wait for an hour or two and get something that makes them happy? No less pitiful than you trying to be the determiner of what is pitiful as you hangout, wasting similar hours of your life criticizing the desires of others. What's that word, . . . . oh yeah, . . . . hypocrisy.

+1 TAW = Troll at work

It won't move the stock, however

It will keep the stock from going down. The expectation is already set by Wall Street. Apple has to exceed very high expectations to outpace analyst predictions, but any misstep could drop the stock. Eventually analysts are going to get overly optimistic and some investors will get burned. Buy low, sell high -- it's a little late to jump on the Apple stock bandwagon -- the bulk of the profit has been missed. Though the company still has a huge potential given the potential size of the tablet market and its current leadership position.

All Xoom/Honeycomb reviews from Engadget to Ars Technica to All Things D seem to indicate that there is a very "beta/pre-release/rush-to-market" feel to it. Samsung is already flummoxed about the iPad 2 pricing and trying to figure out how to react on their Honeycomb tablet. I don't think it will stay this way -- I got my hands on my brother-in-law's Xoom and it has potential and does some things well. The Phandroid cry of "Tab Browsing" is comical since Apple has had that without showing you the tabs since iPhone OS 1.0.

Given Android's premature state in the tablet market I think Apple stands to maintain a near-monopoly in this space for another year -- which will give them a two year head start on market saturation and very much make the iPad the defacto standard for years to come. As the tablet market grows, Apple stock will benefit steadily from it. The only problem is that smart analysts are already predicting this and Apple stock is going up accordingly with that expectation. There are of course the few dumb analysts who think that tablets are destined to follow the same route as smart phones with an Android surge overtaking Apple. These analysts are carelessly taking a single trend in one market and extrapolating it to another market without considering the difference in the markets including retail strategies, the lack of carrier contract dependency, the fact that Android mainly stole market share from RIM and MS who are not players in the tablet space, and the fact that Apple started and defined the tablet market. It is very possible that Apple will one day not be the dominate player in the tablet market, but the reason won't be because "that's what happened with smartphones" it will be because there is some innovation a competitor has made that appeals to the masses coupled with good pricing and good execution on the part of that competitor. Whatever that innovation is it will have to be compelling enough to overcome the inevitability factor of Apple iPad -- much in the same way Mac has had to slowly try to overcome the inevitability factor of the Windows PC.

yep, the lines now are OK, but wait this afternoon.
At least they will have it spread out many retailers, but I still think it will be a mess.

iPad 3G AT&T order numbers:

16GB White MC982LL/A
16GB Black MC773LL/A
32GB White MC983LL/A
32GB Black MC774LL/A
64GB White MC984LL/A
64GB Black MC775LL/A

Pad 3G Verizon order numbers:

16GB White MC985LL/A
16GB Black MC755LL/A
32GB White MC986LL/A
32GB Black MC763LL/A
64GB White MC987LL/A
64GB Black MC764LL/A

I am pretty sure they will know the difference...

The Phandroid cry of "Tab Browsing" is comical since Apple has had that without showing you the tabs since iPhone OS 1.0.

I think their point is that Android's tabbed browsing is one-touch rather than the two-touch tabbed browsing of iOS, which is more convenient, but the tabs chew up real estate, which is actually a bit of a problem on the Xoom because it's widescreen format increases the horizontal but reduces the vertical relative to the iPad (in landscape orientation), and the Xoom loses real estate at the bottom for its task bar, so it really is painful to lose the real estate at the top to the tabs.
