This crap straight pisses me off. The reason I was not able to find a 64GB AT&T model in all of NYC area. I waited for HOURS Friday and Saturday!

This is why you order online and WAIT a week. What ever happened to patience? This is why people are willing to pay ridiculous markups in other countries, they don't realize that they've gotten along just fine without it their entire lives, another month won't kill them.

That being said, why would you want an AT&T iPad in the NYC area? I thought NYC had no AT&T service?

Uhm... Not sure where you heard that from, but NYC has AT&T service. I can't speak for the entire city, as i simply do not know, but at least manhattan and brooklyn both do.

One per customer should have been strictly enforced. Plenty of people deserved to get on on launch day. Hate seeing them on eBay or going elsewhere while many who waited walked away with nothing.

Scalpers like this are the main reason why the stocks run out at such a fast pace. I feel bad for those who waited in line to get one but returned empty-handed.

I also feel bad for those who are buying these resold iPad 2s which cost as much as US$1,400. Are they really to a point that their desire and lust to get the product as soon as possible peaks and they can just shell out anything to get it so they can show off and get some pseudo-pride?

These folks are the scum of the Earth. They seek to prey on every opportunity to force you into paying their prices by creating artificial stock shortages, and unnecessarily long waits for valued items. Double the price is simply ridiculous. Buying 1 or 2 to resell, I'll agree, is free market, but buying 200 to resell is pure and simple GREED. When you hire multiple people in multiple cities just so you can game the system, there's no other explanation.

It's amazing how many folks don't understand the difference between the terms greed and free market. They think anytime someone buys something and attempts to resell it, even if it's double or triple the price, that's just capitalism. Sorry but it jus' ain't true. Economics 101, guys.

Well...

Unfortunately my friend in the States could not compete with these scalpers.

He stood in line that day and was told that all stocks were sold out. :( He went back home and ordered online and the shipping time was increased to 3-4 weeks when he ordered.

Um, why didn't he order @ 4AM EST like I did (woke up, ordered, and went back to sleep). He could have gotten it this week. I got one @ Target Friday night and canceled my online order while standing in line with my ticket.

Blame the Apple Store for this one. Target was only allowing one per customer. Same goes for Wal-mart.

I think Apple would rather sellout than everybody gets one and has left over stock. Maybe they should have a standby list if you want any of the leftover stock (if there is any).

Yea because the Verizon iPad is everywhere to be found.

Supposedly the GSM models blew out first. However, my buddy called me and said the Target he was at the next day had about 15 64GB White Verizon/CDMA iPads. I called a Target by me just after and they were all out, but another I called had 5 left in the same model. So there were pockets of the CDMA model in the largest capacity available near me the next day. I'm guessing that these models did not sell at first due to their high price and lack of demand in International markets and/or possibly due to "White" being less popular. It could just be that Apple sent more Verizon models to retailers while keeping more GSM models for their own stores too. And of course, these two isolated Target stores may not have been indicative of a national trend, but it was interesting that 20 such White 64-GB Verizon iPads could be located on day 2 of availability - and I only called 3 Target stores.

I had an online order at 1:01am for a 64GB-Black-Verizon iPad. I thought about canceling and buying from Target, but opted to wait for the Black one. Despite the novelty of "white" iPad or iPhone, I prefer the look of the black. I am still in the "Prepared for Shipment" status with a target date of this Friday.

Waiting line

There's something to waiting line and getting my new toy on launch day, I did it for iPhone, and when I upgraded to 3G I did it again. I was in line friday for my new iPad 2 and got what I wanted. I didn't have to for my 3GS, i4 and iPad due to pre ordering and having it on my door step on launch day. If you have not done the line thing try it as it's a lot of fun with the people you meet and what goes on prior, it's like a big gathering of people with the same interest in the new product and some Apple die hards like myself. Swapping stories and ideas, predictions of all different things, such as how many they got etc. I've met some very nice and interesting people at Apple launch's. Friday for iPad 2 I left work early to go wait, so the only thing I was missing was a bit of work. It's somewhat of a challenge as well, I got the one I wanted as well as I have another one coming, I ordered one at 12:45am Friday as soon as servers kicked on. I should see that one by Tuesday and that's for my daughter.
I'm enjoying my new iPad 2 and waiting was not only worth it but fun as well!

If you have not done it try it next time, and BTW I'm not the type of person that can sit in lines and the last person friends and family think would or even could do it. The time does seem to go by fairly fast when you are talking with people in line.:cool::apple:

Because sane readers like you and me are a nearly extinct species.

The average MacRumors reader is completely oblivious of Munster's pathetic record and MR would rather absorb the pageviews from shoddy reporting rather than point out Munster's laughable track record. (He's not even a star-rated analyst.)

Journalism died in the mid-Nineties. The media will lie to you just to get attention. Integrity has vanished.

i love cvaldes.. he has such insight that most of us MR readers don't possess, I hope I can capture his wisdom one day..

I was in line at an Apple store and was told limit of 2 per customer no exceptions. I should have gotten 2 and let my wife buy two for us to sell. Oh well, next year for the 3.

I have to agree with this poster. I waited in line for 3 hours Friday and got the one I wanted, but I'd be truly pi$$ed off if they sold out before I got into the store because of people buying them for resale overseas.

Well... I'm not sure why. Maybe he got one actually and sold on eBay? :D

Greed is a relative term. Corporations grow on the backs of greedy CEO's. Whether it's profit, prestige, or power my friend.

China knock-off in 3...2...1...

That's a real iPad by my wager. I've been to too many Chinese/Taiwanese electronic markets, and each one has numerous booths that stock Apple products. Most of the fake stuff is composed of cases and accessories (eg. fake Incase cases).

oops, he's the G World guy in Hong Kong!!

The iPad 2 launched on Friday to massive lines and quickly became sold out. Fortune reports on a surveys conducted by Piper Jaffray's Gene Muster surrounding the iPad 2 launch. Munster found that the iPad 2 was completely sold out this weekend.

According to Munster's survey of 236 respondents in New York and Minneapolis lines, he found that 70% of iPad 2 buyers were new to the iPad. Assuming this survey can be generalized to the iPad 2 buying audience, Munster believes this high percentage of new customers as a positive sign for Apple's continued growth in the tablet market:Meanwhile, one of the reasons that the iPads were in such high demand on opening weekend was due to international resellers who were buying up as many iPads as possible to ship to other countries.

MICGadget profiles one such Hong Kong reseller who took orders for 200 units before the launch and prepared eight couriers in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles to stand in line and then hop on a plane back to Hong Kong. The reseller was marking up units to $1025 for the base 16GB Wi-Fi model and up to $1525 for the Wi-Fi/3G 64GB model.

ChipChick also was contacted by a couple of different Russian resellers who had a similar scheme with up to 8 line-holders in place in New York City to buy the early iPad 2 models.

Apple is expected to replenish stock on Monday to its retail stores. Online ordering is still available but new orders are currently seeing 3-4 week delays.

So

I guess this was the international launch after all.

Personally, I think it's a bit silly how Apple refuses to disclose that it's only GSM iPads that will take a long time to ship. When I placed my order for a Verizon one, it said 2-3 weeks for all, and then my shipped two days later with the first shipments. This is a failure on part of Apple. They should have known that some iPads would be selling internationally on day 1, and therefore had more of them ready.

By the way, can GSM iPad run on T-Mobile's network without any modifications? If so, why even call it "AT&T"? T-Mobile should just announce it's own data plans, they could grab some customers.

That being said, why would you want an AT&T iPad in the NYC area? I thought NYC had no AT&T service?

I want an AT&T iPad 2 because I have an iPad 1 with unlimited data. I don't want to switch to Verizon and my unlimited data account.

I was at the Apple store trying to buy an iPad2. I picked up an iPad2 and I couldn't find the sim slot.
Are you sure you bought a 3G version and not the WiFi only iPad?

One per customer should have been strictly enforced. Plenty of people deserved to get on on launch day. Hate seeing them on eBay or going elsewhere while many who waited walked away with nothing.
I stood in line for 3 hours watching people walk out with 2 iPads in their bags. Since our line had over 400 people they should have limited it to 1 per person to make sure everyone in line could get one.
