Well, the sole limitation that the internal apps surely won't be using the space for play back and nothing can be synced onto it, will make the card somewhat cumbersome to use for that purpose. People buying iPads usually don't like cumbersome to use...
I dunno. I just don't see how they couldn't cripple it too much without defeating the entire purpose of having the slot in the first place.

Well they could introduce a feature in the iPad 2 which would allow to use media(like music) and data files(like pdf) stored on a sd card.

It's going to be redesigned anyway to accommodate CDMA frequencies.

A redesign is not necessary, however. Dropped call statistics showed no statistically significant difference between iPhone 4 and 3GS calls. While the IP4 had a greater single point of failure, it was mitigated by superior overall performance.

I'm encouraged to learn that Apple realizes how badly they failed with the iPhone 4 antenna. Yes I'm aware of the record sales, yet that doesn't prove anything other than Apples ability to sell anything no matter the quality or performance.

A complete redesign is the appropriate action. Hopefully if some fault is discovered early (like the iP4 antenna) & called to Jobs attention, he will take it seriously instead of sticking it to the customer as he did with antennagate. His age is showing as he becomes set in his ways, a fact of life. Whether he still has it may need to be considered.

Should the new phone function properly that would restore many peoples trust in Apple. I'd like nothing better.

While I do understand where you're coming from, I have to say that I don't think the iPhone 4 is viewed as flawed anymore by the public. In the first few weeks after release, I'm sure the majority of people asked about it would have told you in an instant what was wrong with it and how Apple had screwed up. But fast forward a few months later, and I really don't think that is the case today. I would venture to say that the iPhone 4 no longer triggers thoughts of antennagate anymore. The media has calmed down and left it alone, and the public now sees what an incredible phone it is. Therefore I see no need for a total redesign.

Why does the rear camera on the ipad 2 and all ihone's look soooooo small (like a pin hole) in comparison to android phones from motorora, and htc. I noticed that the android phone's rear cameras look much bigger like a fish eye.

When they say completely redesigned, they mean new SoC, radio and radio provider (qualcomm). The aesthetics will only change as the antenna band has to accommodate CDMA and GSM frequencies.

Thank you for sharing this, now I assume you'll be fired from your senior executive job at Apple for spilling this inside information?

Lies... Lies.... Lies..... The iPad is too young to bring so many features. The iPhone is too new to change the design. And Apple tv is not a success yet so why bother investing more money on it?

iPad will be cooler... Not greater. Just the Apple way.

Remember all that antennae nonsense? The iPhone will see a redesign. Apple wants to put all those fears to rest.

Slightly different view here.

I wouldn't say irresponsible, since the media can report all the gossip they want. I'd rather say clueless and stupid. Somewhat near Jersey Shore level.

I'd say it is irresponsible to create a frenzy over something you just don't understand. Especially if that frenzy damages a person or company. Fortunately the venues can still be held accountable as the democrats haven't taken away our right to sue yet.

Look back in time in these forums and see what some of the posters where doing here based on this crap reporting. We had people trading in, returning or swapping iPhone 4's simply because of media fears instilled in them.

I was never sold on the "tic-toc" theory. By that logic, the second iphone (iphone 3g) should have been very similar to the first. But it wasn't. The first major redesign came after one year, and the second major redesign came after 2 years. That's all the data we have so far. The way I see it, it's just as likely that they will wait 1 year for another redesign as it is they will wait 2, since each of those events has happened once.

Basically, I think people are trying to find order in randomness too much. Apple has continuously gone against patterns in pretty much everything they do (save for the predictable anual product special events) and personally, I like it that way. It keeps things interesting, and surprise is more fun than routine.

I tend to agree with you. Except that the 3G really was a lot like the 2G except for the added G, which was always coming (even mentioned at original iPhone launch by SJ). Other than that, it was basically an iPhone 2G. But yeah, the 3GS was a rehash internally, and the iPhone 4 a total revamp. That's 2 fairly major bumps in 2 years. So I agree tic-toc is doesn't make sense for iPhone.

I believe iPhone development follows strategic marketing direction, modulated somewhat by technological and financial concerns. So I agree with you that if Apple think they need to redesign it from scratch to meet a market objective, they will (eg iPod mini->Nano).

On the other hand, I can't think of any market driven reason to redesign iPhone 4 right now. Hence I think it's more likely a tic. But then I don't work at Apple, don't know their strategic objectives, and don't even work in marketing (just an armchair observer). So what do I know.:D

Your correct on the CPU guys probably not knowing about screen res. and some other things. But the iOS guys would. The team building the OS would have to know everything about the new devices so they can make the OS work on them.

iOS developers would also be limited in what they would know. Remember that the iPhone OS guys didn't know that there was an iPad before the general public(News story from a while ago).

More pixels = more idle power consumption.

If you look under iStat Menus for your GPU wattage, with and without extra screens, you'll notice that GPU power consumption is almost directly proportional to the number of pixels. That means your GPU will draw roughly double the power if you add a 2nd screen of the same resolution. I saw this relationship as I was changing my setup. The GPU is constantly sending the pixel data to the screen, that is: (pixels x bit depth x fps) bit/s.

So if you increase the pixels by 4x on the iPad, and with nothing running in the background, sitting on the homescreen, the new iPad GPU will draw 4x more power just sitting there.

You might be wondering that the iPhone 4 managed to do this and still increased battery life, well that jump added 460k pixels, this next jump is adding 2.36 million pixels.

iPad for sure needs a resolution update! I had one for 2 weeks and took it back because the pixels were too big. I knew that resolution wouldn't last more than 1 generation.

You point out one thing that is really disgusting about Apple.

I would!

I've got a 32GB iPad. The only time I'd like a larger capacity one is when I go on vacation or travel.

I've got 48GB of SDHC cards sitting right here on my desk. Usually use them in my camera.

Apple charge £100 for the extra 32G (32->64). I can get 2 16GB Sandisk cards from Amazon for just £15 each.

That of course is their excessively high prices for Storage. This isn't just an iPad issue but it needs to be highlighted in this context. Of course I will have to admit that in iPads case they are likely using a stacked set of dies to get those higher storage figures and thus slightly higher prices. Even then it appears that we are getting screwed. On top of that there is plenty of room within iPad for cheaper flash storage modules (spread out on a larger motherboard).

It would be far better for Apple to offer a wider spacing in storage increases that to charge so much for trivial increases in capacity. You note the cost for the 16GB Sandisk modules but realize that is retail through a high cost supplier. Apple buys at the best prices possible and still rapes the consumer.

Sad! Very sad indeed!

What difference does it make for a current device owner, who doesn't plan to upgrade, if there are minor tweaks, or major tweaks? I for one, will not be upgrading this year simply because I can't afford it. However, I would prefer for Apple to go all out with every new device, so when I DO upgrade, I'm getting bleeding edge, not a minor hardware refresh. I won't feel like my stuff is antiquated, it will still work just as well the day after launch as it did the day before launch.

The SD card slot is inevitable. The iPad 2, thankfully, will not require synching with iTunes/iPhoto on a separate computer. Therefore, you have to be able to get the photos, music, etc. in there directly.

Re. iPad - I don't expect much of a change, facetime and that's about it and IF we'er lucky 128GB on the high end (everything being bumped up one).
- No rear camera (what do you need it for? AR not really being used by the masses yet).
- No SD card slot, why when the Apple storte is selling SD kits at 25 UKP.
- No mini USB, only for Phones as standard in EU (at some point).
- No better display as app. developers would have to step up their game bringing better resolution to the fore.
As for desgin, who knows...
Think of the speculation over the years, the transition of the iPhone and the hope and dreams of us Apple buyers being smashed every time, I expect little and will be happy as I will be buying an iPad anyway (a good DJ tool for house parties and back up, everything else is a bonus).

As for the iPhone 4G/4s/5 what ever it will be called, WHO KNOWS...

What I do know is - The speculation is cyclical - Ipad > MacBook Pro update > iPhone > iMac > MacBook Pro > Apple TV > MacBook Air > iPad.
Are the minority never happy with an Apple product now?
When something is updated the look to the horizon for the next (and mistake every cloud as a clue) :)

Except if the higher end model has the better screen :) No Retina Display for you if you only get the 16GB version...

I was also thinking about this, but I don't think it would happen to the screen. Maybe the A5 chip would get the bump, or more RAM, but the screen and cameras will be the huge selling points to the average consumer and Apple would want to market those features universally.

What gets me is for years ...as Apple people we where always a tad behind the times and life was good. Now it seems like every six months I am buying new hardware....aaaarrrggghhh make it stop already. If they want me to keep up this pace they they need to talk to Barclay's about lowering my interest rate!:mad: I just got done paying off my iPad. I was hoping to use the extra credit to buy a shiney new MBP when if finally refreshes....buuuutttttt nnnoooooo we need to redesign the iPad and the iPhone at the same time.....dman you Steve.....can't we go back to being slower at this:D:D

End comedic rant....for now

Huh? The only people still talking about the antenna are people who don't want to buy an iPhone and are using as a convenient excuse to shut down the fanbois who ridicule their choice.

Of course Apple will eventually redesign the iPhone. How soon is soon is too soon to be lampooned for being "forced to fix the faulty design"? This year? Next year? Doesn't matter? Likewise, how small a design change would still be considered a "backdown" from their position that there's no problem?

Apple will NOT change a design because of "fears". They will only change it if it needs changing. I would argue that since the free bumper program ended and with no mid-production design tweak, Apple believe the design doesn't need to change.

Completely redesigned?! My iPhone 4 is going to feel old faster than I thought.

My take in this round.

iPad 2: Very spot on. Bet it launches sooner and a hell of a surprise around MacWorld next week.

iPhone 5: First, that not that name. My guess it will be the iPhone 4G with the same industrial case design as the iPhone 4 but a "totally redesigned" electronic set and perhaps the same battery. It will be "4G phone done right" featuring Facetime across 4G and integration into iChat, Yahoo IM and Eyeball. A few will be shocked to see demos with Andriod phones on the launch. A few button placements are changed making those on this list bitch about needing to buy a new case. Bet this launches in the summer during WWDC.

New Apple TV: Doubt we will see this 'til the fall. They have feedback to review on the current Apple TV. Also with all the FCC regulations on video streaming on the Internet, a lot of hardware vendors are holding back til the dust settle on that one.

Glad that Steve held his ground on the antenna issues. About the only thing he didn't do was name a few bloggers and say "**** you!" Interesting how the bitching stopped around the press conference.

Apple will move to a single CDMA/GSM chip if possible - it's just a matter of time.
If they can get it in for iPhone 5 and keep a similar size/weight and price then they will. If they can't - then they will wait for the next revision.

I'm actually a little surprised if they update the iPad to something less than 2x resolution.
But I guess now they have the clout to do something less than convenient for developers.

+1. Ah well. It's still a great phone. But I will say if they put a much faster chip in it, I will be jealous.

Maybe it just me, but I don't really see the advantage to dual core cpus in phones. I currently have a Droid 2 rooted and it comes with a qualcomm(gpu is close to the one in the iphone 4) and I never thought to myself; uh wow I wish my phone(cpu wise) was faster. .

Actually, I hate to say it but I have seen my iphone 4 lag some (already, it took my previous iphone a year at least before it started having noticeable lag issues). And I'm absolutely sure it's not data speed related as it is when I'm doing stuff like playing games (for example) or loading up a program.

It's not really annoying (yet) except for the fact I find it worrisome it already has some issues with lag and they haven't even replaced it with a newer one yet!

One guy I work with measures his success by the amount of complaints he receives from well profiled, anti-social marketing demographic. It is typically single / divorced males, high school to college dropout, age 30 to 60 with a lower middle class income and little of any net worth. I think that describes about half of those who post here.
