Apple will move to a single CDMA/GSM chip if possible - it's just a matter of time.
If they can get it in for iPhone 5 and keep a similar size/weight and price then they will. If they can't - then they will wait for the next revision.

I'm actually a little surprised if they update the iPad to something less than 2x resolution.
But I guess now they have the clout to do something less than convenient for developers.

Word is the Verizon iPhone 4 is the first of this with the CDMA side turned on and the GSM end totally castrated in production.

I bet we will see this iPhone 4G as a multi-mode phone with options to sell it via "pay as you go" plans. Virgin Mobile and Metro PCS has been wanting the iPhone for a long time. The app to track your expenses will be awesome!

What gets me is for years ...as Apple people we where always a tad behind the times and life was good. Now it seems like every six months I am buying new hardware....aaaarrrggghhh make it stop already. If they want me to keep up this pace they they need to talk to Barclay's about lowering my interest rate!:mad: I just got done paying off my iPad. I was hoping to use the extra credit to buy a shiney new MBP when if finally refreshes....buuuutttttt nnnoooooo we need to redesign the iPad and the iPhone at the same time.....dman you Steve.....can't we go back to being slower at this:D:D

End comedic rant....for now

Amen to that. I think, even though we do tend to beg for newer and better features, many of us would in the end be happier with our products if they weren't constantly being updated. I know I'd be able to enjoy my Apple products a hell of a lot more if I had the assurance that it would have even 1 1/2 years before being outdated.

Hopefully they do something. If not, I doubt my next phone will be an iPhone. I personally don't like the design of the ip4, it's not horrible, but it's not great. It's no where near as comfortable to hold as the 3GS was. I've gotton used to it now, but everytime I pick up my girls 3GS, I remember what I'm missing. I now know how much I will use a device like this, and I know now that I would like a bigget screen, something I know that probably wont do. I also feel ui is also way behind the time. Htc sense blows it out of the water in my opinion. Maybe it's to complicated for others, but I like it a lot.

I am looking forward to some ios UI enhancements as well but htc sense looks just like the old touchflo. Not sure which os is is behind the times.

If the resolution was made 2048 X 1536...assuming a 9.7 inch screen, it would have a DPI of 264. I don't think anyone is suggesting it going over 300.

264 pixels per inch is a waste at the distance you hold an iPad. With the limited fill-rate of the GPU, it could also cause performance problems for games.

BTW, again, developers have been dealing with different resolutions since bitmap displays have existed. iOS is not any different. Bad developers will just have to learn not to assume the resolution of the screen but to check for it and build their stuff accordingly.

Resolution differences are not fragmentation, never were on Windows/Mac/Linux, never were on Android, never should have been on iOS.

@Marximus
Glad you agree...my whole point being, those of us not made of money use the sale of the previous gen product to fund the purchase of the new one...whether we need it or not. If we fall too many generations behind we tend to start all over again. I liken it to friends of mine who buy a new car every two years...need it or not they don't want to lose their ass once it's value goes in the toilet.

My main house computer is an antique, bastardized , abomination but I still love it and it gets the job done. Not bad for an outdated power pc.

I by no means have ever used any of my iDevices to their limit and found it necessary to upgrade for performance reasons...it's purely financial and being thrifty. The Apple game is not one that has a cheap admission price to get in the door.

Need to know,
Will iPad 2 have a media event? Or will it be a silent update.

Can someone please tell me so I can time selling my iPad 1

If the redesign thing is true there are gonna be a bunch of angry VZW iphoners come June.

The rumor seems highly unlikely. If there really were a single CDMA/GSM chip, why are there references to multiple iphone 5s and ipad 2s in the next iOS version 4.3? Why have iphone 4,1 and iphone 4,2 and an ipad 2,1 and 2,2 models as opposed to simply iphone 4,1 and ipad 2,1? We already know the iphone 3,2 refers to the Verizon iphone 4 and the iphone 3,1 is for the older ATT iphone 4. Sure there is an iphone 3,3, for which we don't know what it does, but there is no ipad 2,3 or iphone 4,3. So there is simply no indication that Apple intends on moving to the single CDMA/GSM chip yet.

Re. iPad - I don't expect much of a change, facetime and that's about it and IF we'er lucky 128GB on the high end (everything being bumped up one).
- No rear camera (what do you need it for? AR not really being used by the masses yet).
- No SD card slot, why when the Apple storte is selling SD kits at 25 UKP.
- No mini USB, only for Phones as standard in EU (at some point).
- No better display as app. developers would have to step up their game bringing better resolution to the fore.
As for desgin, who knows...
Think of the speculation over the years, the transition of the iPhone and the hope and dreams of us Apple buyers being smashed every time, I expect little and will be happy as I will be buying an iPad anyway (a good DJ tool for house parties and back up, everything else is a bonus).

As for the iPhone 4G/4s/5 what ever it will be called, WHO KNOWS...

What I do know is - The speculation is cyclical - Ipad > MacBook Pro update > iPhone > iMac > MacBook Pro > Apple TV > MacBook Air > iPad.
Are the minority never happy with an Apple product now?
When something is updated the look to the horizon for the next (and mistake every cloud as a clue) :)

You're probably wrong. We have reliable sources that state that the iPad 2 WILL have many of these features.
Rumors from reliable sources>gut feeling.

I don't understand.... An iPhone is only 200 dollars, won't us verizon customers be happy that we are able to buy a new cooler iPhone

not if you buy one now and a new one comes out 4 months later you wont be happy :)

on the other hand, The reason I personally think the June iphone wont have anything to do with verizon is, If they were planning on making an iphone announced in June with 1 chip for Verizon and ATT, they why would they waist all the money and time in developing the iphone 4 to work on verizon right now, for 4 months worth of sales? would it really be worth it? plus all the bad press they will get if they announce a new V model in June

Lies... Lies.... Lies..... The iPad is too young to bring so many features. The iPhone is too new to change the design. And Apple tv is not a success yet so why bother investing more money on it?

iPad will be cooler... Not greater. Just the Apple way.

The mobile world is constantly evolving. You can bet that Apple will have more cool stuff to add this time next year.

No. I will be happy because I get a iPhone now. That I have been waiting for and I get the new and improved iPhone shortly after,

I think we will get verizon iPhone 5 in June,

I'd suspect that Apple would still allow dev's to return to a lower resolution in games, such as the current 1024 X 768. Its a pretty simple thing to make four pixels act as one w/o any extra interpolation.

I disagree about iOS not being different. First, if it was like other OS's a dev would be able to plan for multiple resolution. Since Apple does not make roadmaps public knowledge, this is not an option. Second, if it was like other OS's, a dev could whip up an update and put it out fast. Given the closed nature of iOS, again this is not possible. Think about it - what if all iPad developers pushed out updates for a new resolution? Yep, HUGE BACKLOG. In fact, Steve Jobs said as much when he introduce the iPhone 4. By making it 4X, previous iPhone 4 apps would have display compatibility w/o the need for interpolation or recompiling of code.

The best solution, the one that makes the most sense for Apple, users, and devs, is to move to 264 DPI and have turnkey compatibility will all existing iPad apps.

ok but keep in mind if you pay $200 February for the iphone 4 and then the 5 comes out for Verizon in June, it's not $200, you will be paying the full price of $600

People who go out of their way to buy an adapter know what it can be used for. If Apple includes a USB port on the device, people will be disappointed when they find out 90% of their peripherals aren't compatible.
They won't put a USB Port on it, they are allowed to use a 30 pin to Micro USB Adaptor in Europe for charging, and, still comply with the Regulations, the 30 pin Male holds the iDevices into their Docks, there is no way they can change that Plug, Apple worked this detail out with the EU two years ago...

So you're saying iOS promotes bad app design ? Devs should never assume the resolution of the screen. Ever. It's a bad design idea to whip up your views around pixel sizes.

It won't have 4 times the pixel count the current iPad has, again, fill-rate issues and a waste as far as the "Retina" effect goes.

Damn your right, I was being stubborn.
But I can still get a 2 year contract extension in June so it will only be 200

hows that if you buy one in February? you have 2 lines? Once you sign the 2 year in feb on your line, you cannot extend again for 20 or so months on that line

most indubiously!

Well done, you actually made me laugh! Will the best selling electronic gizmo in history get a silent update?

I am going to put my actual life on the line and say it will be just short of parading it down from heaven on a pillow made from unicorns when it is introduced.

I was thinking buy verizon iphone 4 now, and when iphone 5 comes out sell iphone 4 and use the money to buy iphone 5 with an upgrade on another line. ;)

Bloated iPad 2

Long shot, but I think the bloated iPad is actually a MacTablet running OSX on the new processor. Why else would a newer version have to be so much bigger than the original?
