Carbon fiber would make for a fantastic back shell IMO. It doesn't scratch nearly as easily as anodized aluminum, and even if it does scratch (depending on the finish), you probably won't notice it nearly as easily. It's also strong as hell and doesn't dent. The one draw-back is that it will snap/crack rather than distort too much, but it takes some effort to get it to that point. And, I'm pretty sure you can paint it too...which would make "Apple White" a possibility.

The problem is, IIRC, Carbon fiber is NOT radio invisible....so no gains there.

You could use the device to pay for something. (Although this seems more useful on phone.)

If you were streaming a movie from the device to your TV and walked into another room it could sense the change and move the streaming to the other TV (purely hypothetical).

An induction charging pad could recognize the device was placed on it and start charging -- rather than always sending out a charging pulse.

Two devices could recognize their proximity to each other.

Your car could unlock the doors as you approach it.

The device could sync up when you set it down next to the computer.

Basically it is just a short range radio. It has a lot in common with the many radios already found in such devices (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) and offers a few other options.

Very cool stuff. Thank you for explaining.

-No Mac App Store (Mac App Store announced a few months later)
-"Nobody reads anymore" (iBooks)
-"Nobody wants to watch video on a tiny screen" (iPod video)
-"There are no plans to make a tablet... We look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail" (iPad)
-"We don't think we'd do well in the cell phone business" (iPhone)
-No need for a camera on the iPod touch (next iPod touch included a camera)

Very good points. All of you who hang on Mr. Job's every word need to realize that he is a businessman not Moses. If there is a market that Apple can make money on I'm sure they will do it. Sheesh!

Don't see apple using carbon fibre, that stuff is expensive. it would probably raise the cost substantially. i think the current price point is decent. cheaper would be nice though :p

maybe the 7 incher will come out next year (or the year after) when the iPad's resolution is doubled, and the 7 incher will have the res of the current iPad.
Two sizes, but easy scalability.

Will be very surprised if there are two sizes available! I didn't think that Apple would do that, but now I'm not so sure...

I agree. Apple have a history (albeit limited) on doing U turns.

I never thought I'd see an Apple Netbook, but the 11" MBA came out.

And before I get jumped on...yes it is a netbook, but it is how all netbooks should have been built in the first place:
  • A slick operating system that is responsive for start up and shutdown
  • SSD for better performance (compensating for slower processor/components)
  • Basically designed for its purpose - casual usage

NOT all things from a large laptop shoved into a small form factor, thus reducing battery life.

I have heard zero negative comments from actual iPad users about either the performance or the display of the iPad. The most common complaint I've heard is that the iPad is too heavy.

The current iPad is almost the weight of a hardbound textbook, which many people would put on a desk or on their lap to read. It's heavier than the typical magazine or paperback book that most people would read while standing on the bus or train.

The question is whether Apple can somehow make a carbon fiber body seem stylish enough for the typical Apple customer.

I really doubt there'll be a 7" model. It would be stupid to do so after Steve crushed 7" tablets. They won't do it.

Ha ha. Apple often works by misdirection. There was time when "nobody reads," when "nobody would want to watch video on their music player," and MANY other examples. It would be just like Apple to say that, and then produce a 7" device that knocks everyone else out of the water.

And having handled a Galaxy Tab at Best Buy, I can tell you that 7" form factor has a lot going for it. Lighter, easier to hold in the hand, but still enough screen real estate for most purposes.

Now I'm not saying this Spring--I would think the 7", if it ever happens, is a future update.

Right now, that's true. But they also used to be all about transparent plastic and the color white.
I don't see why carbon fiber wouldn't make it into their products at some point.

If they go with carbon fiber it'll look like a giant Galaxy S. No thanks. I'd rather have some hefty aluminum.

perhaps it's more like an injectable carbon strand thermoplastic than a thermoset carbon weave.

I just want a better display. I'll probably end up getting my wish with iPad 3. I'll just have to wait.

Will be very surprised if there are two sizes available! I didn't think that Apple would do that, but now I'm not so sure...

So Steve says one thing, somebody else says the opposite, and you doubt that what Steve said is true?

I wish these 7" rumors would be squashed by Steve jobs already.... oh wait... they already were. WTF???!!!!

It's not true!

I've played with the 7" tablets, they suck. I'm always having to blow the images/txt up to read it, and then having to scroll across a page back and forth.

I say keep the ipad the same size, and make the border around it half the size it already is.

and those of you asking for a faster Ipad. Do you even own the device? The thing is instant on, and loads web pages as fast your ISP can deliver them.

Steve has also "made it clear":

-No Mac App Store
-No Apple eBook reader
-No video iPod
-No Apple tablet
-No Apple cell phone
-No need for a camera on the iPod touch
-No plans to make the iPad hardware switch user customizable between mute and screen lock
-No third party apps on the iPhone
-No raising iTunes prices

Agreed, even though I don't know the validity to each and every statement mentioned, but I do remember quite a few of those. One good thing about Apple is that they define a market (or redefine it) and then state what won't happen. And, if the market proves them wrong, they just add to their product (or product line). I can appreciate their ability to change course, if need be.

1 pound iPad is possible

A 1 pound iPad is possible, but may not be this time around, I think.

Thinner display will reduce weight.
Carbon fiber back will also reduce weight.
Optimize super-efficient processors can run at lower wattage. Less power hungry means smaller battery, and consequently a lighter battery.

The current iPad weighs in at 1.6 pounds, while the Kindle weighs in at 0.6 pound (both WiFi versions).

It is possible and a big achievement. Weight is an important consideration when you have to hold a device for several hours while reading your favorite novel.
