They could sell a 7" iPad starting a $499 with a better screen (perhaps retina) and it would still be less then a Galaxy Tab. I would like a small, medium, large option for tablets (touch, 7", 10"). I am not sure what that would leave the for the rest of the market to innovate. With Apple's ecosystem the only thing left would be a TV.

i just want that stupid verizon event to be over. they wont announce the new ipad until after. i thought it would be announced early feb but given the whole verizon stuff it looks like they wont announce ipad 2 specs until march with an april release.

Can someone explain the problem of the 7" form factor? I understand what Steve said, but if the touch is 3.5", can't the interface be adapted to a 7" without smaller fingers? is it that the iPad doubles the resolution and there is no comfort zone in between the touch and iPad that works well? Can apps run at 1.5x size, does this have to do with resolution independence? Sorry I am completely confused now.

In the past I'd thought I wanted a 7" tablet - but now I have a Kindle, and get along fine with that and an iPod Touch.

If I ever do get a tablet, though, it will be a smaller one like that (e.g. Galaxy Tab, given that Lord Jobs has already issued a Bull from on high). Given the iPad's size and weight, I figure I might as well just carry my MacBook Air.

Basically Jobs was pulling an explanation out of his *ss. What he said doesn't stand up to even superficial scrutiny.

They can make carbon fiber look like whatever they want. Just put a faux finish on it.
Hey Apple... announce the freaking thing already!

I just want a release date or an event date

Regardless of what the iPad 2 has, I'm still gonna buy it

It's just like the iPad 1, but comes with a coupon for a free scone at Starbucks. :)

Just remember you heard the "free scone" rumor here first!

Well that all depends on your definition of "No" is (maybe Steve learned something from Bill Clinton?)

Or, that when Steve says, "No" it means, "No, not right at this second."

Steve would never mean just that. More likely: so maybe the engineers have it working in the lab, it works great (by HP or Dell's standards), but that's less than 99% "magical"... therefore it's cr*p, total utter garbage, and the engineers better work a lot harder at making it perfect before I even think of getting any customers hopes up.

Carbon Fiber would yield very little weight savings over aluminum while costing more (I'm guessing). So I doubt it. The weight of the iPad is 50% battery and 50% display panel. The aluminum shell weighs very little.

The few days leading up to the first iPad featured a surge of rumors, all of which failed. 1080p! chess! solar powered! thumbprint reader! cameras! etc.

We're close enough to stop playing "Telephone" with speculations and just wait for the real thing.

All fail but I do admit I like to see eye retinal scan, now that would be cool security.

I'm kinda interested in an iPad as an eBook-Reader (although there's apparently no books on iBooks and Sony Reader and the Kindle app seem to violate the App Store rules...). Right now the weight and price of the iPad are a bit off-putting, it's just too heavy to hold in one hand for a long time.

Certainly everyone has different experiences.... but I love my iPad for reading. Since I got it (launch day) I haven't read a single dead tree book. In total I think I've read ~5000 pages or so (mostly epic fantasy... yes I'm that kind of nerd!).

I've used it for reading in cars, on planes, in chairs and (most often) in bed... and I find it crazy comfortable. Certainly MUCH easier than any hardback... and you don't have to worry about which way you are laying in bed since there are no pages to turn and the thing always has the perfect amount of light on it.

BTW - Some people say they don't like reading with backlit screens... but I _love_ it. My wife can go to sleep right next to me with the lights completely out in the room and I can continue to read with the brightness turned all the way down without disturbing her. Reading in cars and on planes is similarly made easy.

As for iBookstore. I understand it doesn't have _millions_ of books... but it has _tons_. It's never failed to have the book I'm looking for... but I suppose it's going to depend on what you like to read.

In short... don't listen to what everyone else is saying... try it out for yourself. Find a friend with one and see if you can borrow it. Spend some serious time at an Apple store trying one. I think you will be surprised.

I found the iPad to be incredibly uncomfortable to type on while holding so a 7" model would be ideal in soo many ways.

Galaxy Tab side note....

As a side note, I was reading on one of the other tech sites today that the iPad 1.0 has a less than 2% return rate. Whereas the Galaxy Tab has a 15-16% - although Samsung won't confirm this (big surprise).

I don't think it's the 7" size that's sending them back... it's probably the Android 2.1 OS... that has to be clunky on a tablet.

Anyway... thought this was interesting and thought I'd share.

Is it currently practical to mass-produce a carbon fiber case? I'd only seen carbon fiber shells that were done by layering strips of carbon fiber over some already shaped mold. Do they have some new techniques using machines that do that? Carbon fiber is usually used where strength and lowered weight were important, but the cost is usually prohibitive for large-scale production. I can't fathom Apple cutting into its profits using that expensive technique. Aluminum unibody construction seems to be the practical way to go.

7 inch iPad will not come out in my eyes. It's not like Apple to go back on what they say.

Cue the obligatory reference to the one time Apple did change its mind (video on iPod) as defacto 'evidence' of Apple always reversing itself.
