When will we be seeing MacBooks with retina display? My eyes feel weird looking at my phone for a few minutes, then switching to the macbook. I worry that buying the iPad 3 will ruin the macbook experience due to difference in screen quality. Anybody thinking in these terms?

I'm due to update my macbook, but I'm thinking about waiting now.

I think 2012 is the Year of the Retina Display for Apple so don't be surprised to see a "Retina" display in a Mac this year - most likely the up-coming MB Pro 15" revamp. But March 7 couldn't come soon enough. I read a lot so the Retina display is enough to sell me on one.

I hope this is true and it is another homerun!
I also hope that maybe the IPad 2 at the refurb store would drop in price, kinda like the IPad 1 did when the 2 was announced, so I can finally get one. I am pretty sure I will be quite happy with a 2.

I wasn't thinking of upgrading but.....LTE would be a sweet reason to change my mind.

According to various reports the difference in speed between 4G/LTE and 3G is supposed to be significant - though I'd like to see some actual metrics on that. Or user experience. Or both.

One of my business friends just traveled across the country with an ATT iphone. The reception in some hinterland areas is so bad (or even zero) that he had to get a second phone, which he made an LTE Android.

He says: LTE smokes when it's available.
He hated the size of the Android (had a protective case on it, as it didn't fit comfortably into his pocket.

Yay to LTE, no to Android! here:)

LOL...literally:D

Now THAT'S devotion! I don't even think LTD(;)) could match that level of commitment to Apple! :D

LTD is already in line at his local Apple store!

3G or not 3G, that is the question.

My iPad1 is getting mighty snaggly-toothed under ios5 so I'm ready to upgrade ASAP. I want LTE, but 3G won't kill me. In fact, I'm kind of afraid it'll make my home internet connection seem slow!

I think 4G would be cool, but not necessary. In the UK we don't have 4G yet, and it seems in America only AT&T support it? Still, I suppose 4G-ready devices will mean networks have an incentive to upgrade their data speeds.

Also, anyone know when the iMacs are likely to be updated? I'm not too fussed about a Retina Display, just the buyer's guide is telling me to wait, and I want to know for how long :) It'll be my first Mac.

I've never even considered getting an iPad with 3G because the iPhone creates a personal hotspot. I already have an excellent data plan on my iPhone. If I had a 3G iPad, I'd have to get yet another separate plan. I never use up my iPhone's data plan so it's better to share data with both iPad and iPhone.

Has anybody with an iPhone (or another personal hotspot enabled phone) purchased a 3G iPad? Why? What are the advantages?

I have one because I got it before I got a hotspot capable iPhone. It was handy when I took transit to work. Now I drive, so my 3G plan was cancelled long ago. It may be necessary for some, probably not for most.

To me, the screen is fantastic as is, at least for my purposes.
Well, i accept that for your purposes it might be fantastic, by compared to some other tablets, it's the most glaring weakness. I'm finding the PPI too low on both ipads, especially for webpages and text in general.

Quad core IS very nice, and I'm sure lots of apps will utilize this, but I don't use my iPad expecting the fastest of speeds. Again, for what I've done, the iPad2 is amazing as is.
Actually there will be only a handfull of apps capable of utilizing more than 2 cores, mostly games built on modern engines, i'm not even sure if unreal engine for iOS can take advantage of more than 2 cores, but even if it does/will, that will be just a handfull of apps(games).

If you have an iPad 1, I can see upgrading since you gain A LOT. But from an iPad 2, I'm just not seeing it.
It will be a great upgrade to anyone thanks to the screen, but if you're happy with what you have, great, money saved :)

If you're not sure the extra cost of a LTE model is worth it (assuming this even happens) just get a Wi-Fi one. You can always just get one of those 4g Mi-Fi hotspots (or whatever they're called) later on which would essentially add the same functionality.

Seems clear apple is getting further ahead of the competition in the tablet market. The os and ecosystem give apple a massive edge. The hardware is just icing on the cake.

Yes; me.....GPS chip for satnav (Navigon) on an almost 10" screen? :D
Trust me; if your eyes are as old / bad as mine, you'd appreciate it too.....

This thing is going to sell like hot cakes, er...I mean iPhone 4S'
Yeah I need to get my taxes in and back so I can resell them again this year. I bought 12 total last year, helped me pay for mine but had to lose money by keeping the second for my wife. What natural disaster is in que for this year to cause shortages? Massive X Class CME, Volcanic Eruptions, or oil reserves depleating?

Good deal. I'll be waiting with my credit card patiently in hand!

Well, I have one of the grandfathered unlimited plans on AT&T (both iPhone and iPad) so if I wanted to use the hotspot functionality, I'd have to give up unlimited data. Also, when the original iPad came out, the hotspot functionality was not yet available (unless you jailbroke) so in my case, the 3G was a necessity if I wanted unrestricted access to the internet. Considering these circumstances, for the time being I'll continue to get 3G/4G capable iPads when I upgrade as I don't want to lose my unlimited data on either device and the cost savings per month is minimal as the plans are currently priced.

Oh man, I misread. Chalk it up to early mornings.

As it turns out I hadn't misread, but I had forgotten why I thought there was a problem in the first place (chalk that up to early mornings). I had said that the title was misleading, saying 'confirmed' was to everything in the title, as opposed to just the date. It's since been changed to 'date confirmed.

I followed the same rational with mine iPad1. In Canada we get free tethering so why pay for 3G? I'll tell you why, when I travel to the States and have to pay $10-$20/night for wi-fi in the hotel. Suddenly 3G became a lot more attractive since I could get 200mb for $15 or 2GB (or what would be virtually unlimited for a few days out of the country) for $30. I put off buying the iPad2 just for 3G, but the iPad3 w/ 3G is a definite purchase for me.

I bought one, eventhough I have a hotspot capable phone because I can have a dual simcard (same contract for the phone & the iPad, so I don't have to pay extra) and it is a real battery savior. Turn the hotspot on and the phone runs empty in no time.

I have both. I got the 3G because the GPS chip is bundled with the 3G hardware. Besides that, I had thought I might connect with 3G while traveling. In fact I haven't had the need, it just worked out that way.

I will definitely get the iPad 3 with the 3G or whatever, probably for similar reasons. This is all so new we're still working out the work flow.

I can hardly wait for A) March 7, B) the release date, and C) the date supply catches up with demand and I can actually get one of them. :)

I've been holding out on the iPad for the last two years (being a charter MacBook Air owner has helped a lot), but I think the Retina Display will be enough for me to take the plunge.

While this is cool stuff, no way will I upgrade from my iPad2.

Then again, I'm not rich. And I engraved mine so resale isn't there, but I knew that when I chose to do it.

Whoever gets it will love it, I'm sure.

PS: Funny though, the 7th is the day I can upgrade my phone, which I am. Bye bye LG Xenon, hello iPhone 4S!

There is no reason to think that the iPad owners should be on a yearly upgrade path. It is just too substantial a product for anyone but the wealthy or the gadget obsessed to be doing that. I will be upgrading from iPad 1 and am frothing at the bit to do so, but even that is going to be more of a luxury purchase than any sort of need purchase. (Note, iPad has proved to be so useful for work that it is clearly a "need" item at this point. There is no substitute to tablets for being able to review full-sized documents on the subway which were only emailed to you that morning after it is too late to log in and print them out without being late for work.)
